00:28 unhappiness mental causes 1930 in the

00:31 30s doctors wrote again and said as much

00:34 as 30% of our illnesses and ill health

00:38 are mind or mentally related in the 40s

00:40 someone wrote 40% in the 50s it was

00:43 boosted to 50% at every stage that it

00:45 was boosted it was vigorously resisted

00:47 by the established medical professionals

00:50 of the day in the 60s it went to 60% in

00:53 the 70s to 70 today there are virtually

00:56 no medical practitioners who disagree

00:59 with the statistic that at least

01:01 80% of all the ailments that you and I

01:04 suffer in the course of our lifetimes

01:06 are psychologically cause psycho the

01:09 Mind makes some of the body sick as a

01:11 matter of fact I've had many doctors

01:13 many medical professionals psychologists

01:15 psychiatrists and nurses in my courses

01:17 who said that it's probably closer to 90

01:20 maybe even 95% of everything we suffer

01:23 colds flu skin diseases heart attacks

01:27 kidney disease arthritis Strokes up to

01:29 and including cancer are psychological

01:32 in origin so I want to talk today about

01:35 stress and tension I want to talk in

01:37 this session about what it is in our

01:39 mind that creates the situation in our

01:41 bodies that makes us ill now we know

01:44 because we talked about this before

01:46 we've talked about it many times is that

01:47 in a way we decide to get sick uh Dr

01:51 Carl Simonson who worked in Fort Worth

01:53 Texas for many years wrote a wonderful

01:55 book called getting well again and did

01:57 many many excellent articles on the

02:00 itudinal aspects of disease and he

02:01 thought it was an interesting thing that

02:03 people seem to decide to get sick in

02:05 order to deal with a situation in life

02:08 that was unpleasant for them and the

02:10 more serious the situation in life was

02:12 the more serious the illness they got

02:15 for instance if they were feeling

02:17 underappreciated uh at work they got a

02:19 cold if they felt that they were hard

02:21 done by at work they got the flu if they

02:23 felt that their marriage or their

02:25 relationship or their entire career was

02:26 as shambles and they didn't want to deal

02:28 with that they would get things as

02:29 serious heart conditions strokes and

02:31 even cancer he also found that people

02:34 decide to get well as well as deciding

02:37 to get sick and that as soon as a person

02:39 decided to get well all the power of

02:41 modern medicine and all the power of the

02:43 body's immune system would come to work

02:46 to make them better again now why are

02:48 stress and tension well let's talk about

02:49 stress and tension when we're talking

02:51 about stress and tension we know that

02:53 stress and

02:54 tension are

02:57 manifestations of something being raw

03:00 with our view of the world stress and

03:03 tension are the outward manifestations

03:05 of our being unhappy with some aspect of

03:08 Our Lives now whenever we feel physical

03:10 pain if you touch a stove and it's hot

03:12 and you feel physical pain the reason we

03:14 have the physical pain is to give us a

03:16 warning that we are doing something that

03:17 is harmful for us physically the reason

03:21 why we have stress and tension is to

03:23 give us a signal that we are doing

03:25 something in our lives that is harmful

03:27 for us mentally and unless we deal with

03:31 the situation eventually our mind will

03:33 make the body sick and the sickness is

03:36 our way of avoiding dealing with the

03:38 situation right up to the point where we

03:40 can actually make ourselves sick to

03:43 death now with regard to stress and

03:45 tension there is an entire new area of

03:48 medicine today called psychoimmunology

03:50 or psychon neuroimmunology where the

03:54 where they talk about the effect that

03:56 the mind has on either weakening or

04:00 strengthening your immune system and

04:02 they find that negative emotions stress

04:04 tension anxiety anger frustration of any

04:06 kind actually depress the immune system

04:10 they depress antibody production and

04:12 they make you open if you like to all

04:15 kinds of physical illnesses from

04:17 including colds and flu and other things

04:19 is that a person who is positive

04:21 optimistic cheerful enthusiastic and has

04:23 high self-esteem is usually a person who

04:26 is resistant to virtually any of the

04:28 normal diseases going around but a

04:30 person who is negative depressed

04:32 pessimistic down on themselves cynical

04:35 if you like low self-esteem is a person

04:37 whose antibody production is depressed

04:39 and depressed and depressed so sometimes

04:41 they're sick all the time and you find

04:43 that negative people are often sick all

04:45 the time now the key point with regard

04:48 to stress and tension is this is that

04:50 stress and tension come from within they

04:54 come from within not from without is

04:58 that there is no such thing as a

04:59 stressful situation there is only a

05:03 stressful reaction there's only a

05:06 stressful

05:10 reaction for example two people face a

05:13 situation we Ed this example before like

05:15 a traffic jam two people face the same

05:17 situation one becomes upset the other

05:19 one become is still relaxed or the same

05:21 person faces the same situation two

05:23 different days one day they react

05:25 differently and become upset the next

05:27 day they react in a positive way and

05:29 they'll be upset at all it is always

05:31 contained in their reaction it is not

05:33 out there it is in here where stress and

05:36 tension come from it is the way that we

05:38 think and respond to our world not the

05:41 world itself someone once wrote that

05:43 there are three major sources of stress

05:46 and if we took the human body like this

05:48 the three major sources of stress are

05:52 What Might Have Been remember we said

05:54 that people worry about the past What

05:56 Might Have Been is a major source of

05:59 stress we continually think about how it

06:00 might have been different and in the

06:02 present we think of what we should do

06:05 what we shouldn't do and we think in

06:07 terms of shoulds and ought in the future

06:09 we think of what might happen and these

06:14 three What Might Have Been what should

06:17 as opposed to what is and what might

06:19 happen are major sources of stress in

06:21 our lives but it's always the way we

06:23 think about the past the way we think

06:25 about the future the way we think about

06:26 our present in relation to reality that

06:28 causes the stress not the stress

06:31 itself we know that you can decide not

06:35 to be sick I've said this to many of

06:36 people in my courses is you can decide

06:38 never to have colds again everybody

06:40 decides to have colds or not to have

06:41 colds and when I say that people get

06:43 really you know some people get very

06:44 tense why it's because perfect example

06:47 why is it that young mothers never have

06:48 coals why is it that mothers with your

06:50 small children never have coals never

06:52 get sick it's because they don't have

06:54 time is they make the mental decision

06:56 that I don't have time I have

06:57 responsibilities in taking care of these

06:59 children which is so great that I cannot

07:02 get afford to get sick and they don't

07:03 get sick they wait till the children

07:05 grow up go off to school they have more

07:07 time in their hands uh they're spinning

07:09 their wheels or their kids go get up

07:10 grow up and go away and then they go

07:12 back to having colds and flu again so

07:14 you can decide not to be sick or not to

07:16 have colds or flu by doing this very

07:18 simple thing making the decision right

07:20 now you're never going to have a cold or

07:21 flu again just make the decision right

07:23 now I am never going to have a cold

07:25 again and the next time you feel any

07:26 cold symptoms in your body just say I

07:29 feel terrific I feel healthy healthy I

07:32 feel happy I feel terrific I have health

07:35 I have no cold and you know what happens

07:37 the cold will pack up it'll go next door

07:39 to Mrs Brown who believes in colds and

07:41 will leave you alone and that is a fact

07:44 well let's talk we're talked earlier

07:46 about the relationship between stress

07:48 and tension and energy now there are

07:49 three major sources of energy according

07:52 to a great body of work that was done at

07:54 the beginning of this Century the first

07:56 major source of energy is food and the

07:59 type of food we eat and the way we eat

08:01 it and the way we combine it and

08:02 nutrition and vitamins minerals and so

08:04 on the second is air the way we breathe

08:08 the depth that we breathe the amount of

08:09 oxygen that we get in the amount of

08:11 aerobic exercise that we get the amount

08:13 of air and the type of air is a major

08:15 source of energy and the third is

08:18 Impressions now

08:21 impressions are the way we take what

08:25 happens to us in the world around us

08:26 remember we talked about a stressful

08:28 reaction one situation can energize a

08:31 person same situation can depress

08:33 another vers if a disappointment or the

08:36 falling through of a deal or or

08:38 something failing temporarily can cause

08:40 one person to become depressed and

08:41 fatigued cause the other person to be

08:43 energized and ready to go back on the

08:45 offensive so Impressions the way that we

08:48 take in what is happening around us are

08:51 a major source on whether of our energy

08:53 whether it goes up or whether it goes

08:55 down and one of the most important

08:58 pieces of work that I ever read on the

09:00 subject is a discussion of how our body

09:02 is an energy generating machine and it

09:05 generates energy of different qualities

09:08 like an oil refinery and the best

09:10 example I can give you is this

09:13 imagine that your body takes in raw food

09:16 just meat potatoes vegetables and so on

09:20 and this is the basic food stuff or

09:22 energy that the body runs on and if the

09:24 body takes in 1,000 units of food

09:27 whatever that means we say calories or

09:30 thousand units of

09:31 food it can either be used at the

09:34 physical level as it is in most

09:36 countries of the world where it's all

09:37 consumed in physical work and at the end

09:40 of the day the person is exhausted has

09:41 no energy left or as civilization

09:44 advances as our civilization advances if

09:47 it is not consumed in hard physical work

09:50 then it is further refined and it moves

09:52 up the energy chain and it translates

09:55 into emotional energy and it takes a

09:58 thousand unit of physical energy to

10:01 generate a 100 units of emotional

10:05 energy now emotional energy is what we

10:07 feel with emotional energy is how we

10:09 respond emotional energy is our energy

10:12 our Vitality our enthusiasm our

10:14 excitement our self-esteem our joy for

10:16 life and so on if the energy is not used

10:20 at the emotional level then the body

10:22 continues to refine it like a Refinery

10:24 imagine that the physical level is crude

10:26 oil we'll call this crude this is crude

10:29 oil takes in raw meat and potatoes the

10:31 crude oil in the oil refinery is refined

10:34 down and it comes to refined oil the

10:35 kind of oil that you would use in your

10:37 car if it is not consumed there the

10:40 refinery refines it even more into what

10:43 is called mental

10:45 energy mental energy is the energy that

10:48 we think with now this cannot be proved

10:51 scientifically it can only be proved

10:52 intuitively by reference to your own

10:54 experience this would be the equivalent

10:56 of gasoline where we refined oil is

11:00 further refined but it takes a thousand

11:03 units of crude oil to get 100 units of

11:06 uh refined oil to get 10 units of

11:08 gasoline and if it's not burned up at

11:10 the mental level then it goes up and it

11:13 becomes one unit of what is called

11:15 psychic energy or what is often called

11:18 Creative Energy and this is the

11:20 equivalent of let us say lighter fluid a

11:23 very very

11:25 fine form of energy now what happens

11:29 well we know that if we work physically

11:32 very very hard at a sport or work in the

11:34 yard or do something else at the end of

11:36 the day we're exhausted you ever been so

11:38 tired at the end of a day that you uh

11:40 don't have time you don't want to argue

11:42 you don't want to make a decision you

11:44 don't want to get in anything you're

11:46 just physically exhausted and all of

11:48 your energy is burned out well this is

11:50 because we burned it all up at the

11:51 physical level however in most of our

11:53 professions or jobs today we don't burn

11:55 up all of our energy at the physical

11:56 level so it arises to the emotional

11:59 level when we have the emotional energy

12:01 we look for an outlet and our Outlet is

12:03 almost invariably our relationships it

12:05 can be other things but almost

12:06 invariably is our

12:07 relationships we find an interesting

12:10 thing is that positive emotions if our

12:12 emotions are positive enthusiastic joy

12:15 happiness excitement that we burn up

12:17 very little of this energy and the

12:19 energy moves up into mental energy if

12:22 our mental world is positive we're

12:24 working on positive projects working on

12:27 projects that are that are really

12:28 interesting and challenging to us then

12:31 we develop this energy again being

12:33 positive moves up higher and we develop

12:36 psychic energy and psychic energy is the

12:38 energy of creation where we come up with

12:40 ideas and and we have Inspirations and

12:42 we're enthusiastic and we're motivated

12:44 and so on however the biggest problem

12:46 and this is the key is that most people

12:49 burn up all their energy at this level

12:51 at the emotional level they don't use it

12:54 at the physical level because they don't

12:55 work hard enough but at the emotional

12:57 level they burn it all up so they have

12:59 little energy left at the mental level

13:02 and almost no energy left at the psychic

13:04 level and as we said before that you are

13:06 a mind with a body to carry yourself

13:08 around in everything that you are or

13:10 ever will be will be as a result of how

13:12 you use your mind if all of your energy

13:15 is burned up at the emotional level

13:17 through negativity fear anxiety stress

13:20 tension uh anger whatever else it

13:22 happens to be if it's all burned up at

13:23 the emotional level you do not have any

13:26 of what are called the higher forms of

13:28 energy with which to make a great life

13:31 with which to make a wonderful life to

13:33 engage in in happy joyous activities to

13:36 be creative to find solutions to set

13:38 goals to believe in yourself and so on

13:40 and so forth the reason why less than 5%

13:43 of the population fulfill their

13:45 potential in any given generation is

13:47 that most of them are completely

13:49 preoccupied with what is called the

13:51 expression of negative emotions and this

13:54 is the key it is the expression of

13:57 negative emotions that burns up all of

14:00 our

14:02 energy at lower levels so we do not have

14:05 the energy at the higher levels with

14:08 which to fulfill our potential we said

14:11 earlier that a positive mental attitude

14:12 is essential for Success that 85% of

14:15 everything that happens to you is going

14:16 to be attitudinal that 85% of your

14:18 success is going to be caught up in the

14:20 quality of your interactions and your

14:21 relations with other people in other

14:23 words 85% of your success in life is

14:26 going to be involved in positive

14:27 emotions how ever if you burn up all of

14:31 your emotional energy at this level in

14:34 the expression of negative emotions

14:36 talking about negative things talking to

14:38 yourself about negative things thinking

14:40 about negative things uh discussing

14:42 negative things criticizing condemning

14:45 complaining and so on if you do that and

14:47 what happens is you have no energy to

14:49 come up here and here is where the Great

14:52 Joy the great happiness the great

14:54 success of life is involved so what is

14:56 the solution the solution to high levels

14:58 of energy happiness inner peace loving

15:02 relationships living a long time is to

15:05 eliminate the expression of negative

15:07 emotion eliminate the expression of

15:10 negative emotion this is one of the most

15:13 important lessons I have ever learned in

15:15 all of my years and tens of thousands of

15:18 hours of study is to eliminate the

15:20 expression of negative emotions that is

15:22 the starting

15:23 point of all personal growth in fact we

15:27 said earlier when we were talk talking

15:29 about responsibility psychology we said

15:31 that the elimination of negative

15:33 emotions is mandatory not option the

15:37 elimination of the expression of

15:39 negative emotions is the starting point

15:41 of killing the negative emotions if you

15:43 do not express negative emotions if you

15:45 do not discuss negative emotions if you

15:48 do not get involved in negative

15:50 conversations or negative selft talk

15:52 what happens is the negative emotions

15:55 die because of the law of concentration

15:58 if you do not dwell upon a negative for

16:00 any period of time it loses its force

16:03 and effect and dies on you all the

16:05 negative energy that would have been

16:06 drained off by thinking about that

16:08 negative emotion is available to you to

16:11 do productive things we know and we'll

16:13 talk about this later but one Outburst

16:15 of anger five minutes of uncontrolled

16:17 anger can burn up an entire day's worth

16:21 of emotional energy in five minutes that

16:24 is why people who are angry all the time

16:25 very seldom produce anything

16:27 constructive so we start by eliminating

16:29 the expression of negative emotions and

16:31 how do we do that we use some of the

16:33 laws that we know about the first and

16:34 most important of course is the law of

16:37 substitution the law of

16:39 substitution means that we find other

16:42 things to say remember the mind is not a

16:44 vacuum we concentrate we use

16:46 self-discipline to get our mind onto

16:49 something that is positive and by

16:52 putting our mind on something that's

16:53 positive it's like shifting a light by

16:55 putting our mind on something that is

16:56 positive we cannot simultaneous think

16:59 about our worry we also know that if we

17:02 get busy doing something that is

17:03 constructive the action itself because

17:06 it requires our mental and physical

17:08 involvement drives out the negative

17:10 emotion we're not saying to repress so

17:12 some people say should you repress these

17:14 emotions should you suppress them I mean

17:16 if you feel like this should you push

17:17 them under the surface no not at all

17:20 we're F saying this find reasons not to

17:23 express find reasons not to be negative

17:26 in the first place find reasons not to

17:29 express negative emotions now what are

17:32 some of the reasons some of the simplest

17:34 reasons of all is I am responsible when

17:37 you say I am responsible it's very very

17:39 hard for you to blame someone else

17:41 remember we said that almost all

17:42 negative emotions arise from our

17:45 tendency to blame someone or something

17:47 else or something in our Liv that we're

17:48 not happy about when you say I am

17:50 responsible I am responsible I am

17:53 responsible I am responsible when we say

17:56 that over and over again our tendency to

17:59 be negative goes down our tendency to be

18:01 positive goes up the more we use the law

18:03 of substitution by saying I am

18:05 responsible the more our negative

18:08 emotions weaken and eventually you can

18:10 get to the point where negative emotions

18:12 have only a minuscal or a minor

18:15 influence in your life it's almost as

18:17 though we are we have anything from 0%

18:20 negative emotions to 100% negative

18:23 emotions in fact one of the

18:26 characteristics of healthy personality

18:29 is that a healthy personality is a

18:31 person who is on this end of the scale

18:33 now every one of us is somewhere on this

18:36 scale moving in One Direction or the

18:37 other the question you have to ask

18:39 yourself is what percentage of your

18:41 conversation talk to yourself what

18:44 percentage of your conversation with

18:46 others what percentage of your thoughts

18:48 are negative POS negative and

18:50 destructive and devaluing what

18:53 percentage of them are positive

18:55 constructive and uplifting and your

18:57 objective is to remember that everything

18:58 can El is that it is not possible for

19:01 you or I to grow as human beings it is

19:04 not possible for us to evolve with our

19:06 negative emotions intact that the only

19:09 way that we can achieve our potential is

19:11 by working on ourselves continually to

19:14 curb the tendency toward the expression

19:16 of negative emotions this brings us to

19:18 another mental law which is very

19:20 important it's called The Law of habit

19:22 remember the law of habit the law of

19:25 habit says that if in the absence of

19:28 some external influence we will go on

19:31 acting the same way indefinitely the

19:35 expression of negative emotions is a

19:37 habit the expression of negative

19:38 emotions is the primary reason why

19:41 people fail to fulfill their potential

19:44 the expression of negative emotions is

19:46 the number one reason why people fail in

19:49 life why it's because the expression is

19:52 the outward manifestation of the inner

19:55 mental condition as we express negative

19:58 emotions

19:59 and sometimes we suppress them or we

20:01 repress them or we hold them inside as

20:03 we suppress or repress negative emot or

20:05 or Express them externally they have

20:07 exactly the same effect remember we

20:09 talked about the law of expression the

20:11 law of expression says that whatever is

20:18 impressed is expressed that means that

20:21 whatever we impress on the subconscious

20:23 mind through pictures through words

20:26 through the things that we read is

20:28 Express in our reality in then it

20:30 manifests and becomes a part of our

20:32 physical world but we also talked about

20:34 the law of reversibility remember the

20:37 law of reversibility says that just as

20:39 the objective State creates the

20:40 subjective state in other words the

20:42 achieving of the goal gives us the

20:44 feeling of being a winner It also says

20:46 the feeling of being a winner enables us

20:48 to achieve the goal the law of

20:49 reversibility says that whatever is

20:51 expressed is impressed so that whatever

20:54 you are saying to yourself or to other

20:57 people you you are impressing on your

21:00 subconscious mind and it will

21:01 simultaneously be expressed as a part of

21:03 your reality if you can understand this

21:06 I spent something like a thousand hours

21:08 studying this subject to get my mind

21:11 around it and I looked around me and

21:13 I've traveled all over the world I

21:14 looked around and look at all these

21:15 people that are unhappy and struggling

21:17 and not successful and I trying to

21:18 figure out what it was and it finally

21:20 dawned on me in doing this reading that

21:22 this was the answer is that most people

21:26 spend most of their time engaging in the

21:28 expression of negative emotions negative

21:31 thoughts negative ideas negative

21:33 opinions negative criticism devaluation

21:36 starting from Early Childhood that leads

21:38 to guilt leads to feelings of

21:39 worthlessness leads to low self-esteem

21:41 fears of failure fears of H rejection

21:44 fears of loss fears of lack fears of

21:46 limitation fears of ill health and so on

21:49 the expression of negative

21:51 emotions is the key to understanding

21:54 success and failure so when we talk

21:58 as we have talked many times before when

22:00 we talk about how important it is to

22:02 have a positive attitude sometimes

22:04 people will take this discussion that

22:05 we're having and they say well that's

22:07 just positive thinking you're just doing

22:10 positive thinking I said yes but

22:12 positive thinking equals mental health

22:17 negative thinking equals mental illness

22:22 when we were talking about reprogramming

22:24 your mind for success we're talking

22:26 about software for the brain we talked

22:28 about the the importance of the

22:29 reference group the reference group are

22:31 the people that you associate with if

22:34 you associate with people who habitually

22:36 Express negative emotions it is the same

22:38 as associating with people who have a

22:42 communicable disease and the

22:44 communicable disease is underachievement

22:47 and failure in life 95% of everything

22:51 that we say and do and think is

22:53 determined by the external influences by

22:56 the power of suggestion around us

22:58 and you have a choice you know that you

23:01 have the capacity to do something great

23:03 to do something wonderful with your life

23:06 you know that you have the capacity to

23:07 do far more than you've ever done before

23:09 you know that you have the capacity to

23:11 earn more to be happier to achieve more

23:13 to get more peace of mind and

23:15 satisfaction out of life ever before if

23:17 you don't know that by this stage of

23:18 this course then I somehow have not

23:20 explained it properly however the key is

23:24 this is you must look at your life in

23:25 terms of positive versus negative you

23:28 must look at your life in terms of

23:29 everything counting you must look at

23:31 your life in terms of all of the

23:33 influences that you allow into your

23:35 suggestive environment you must look at

23:37 your life in terms of the people you

23:39 must look at your life in terms of the

23:40 television programs television programs

23:43 the average person watches three to five

23:45 murders rapes or violent assaults every

23:48 single night on television the average

23:50 adult has seen over 20,000 violent

23:53 deaths on television by the time they've

23:55 reached adulthood watching television

23:58 from Early Childhood does this have an

24:00 effect on your life does it have an

24:01 effect on your attitude does it have an

24:03 effect on your success the law of

24:05 Correspondence says that each person has

24:08 within them a mental program or a mental

24:11 equivalent and everything in your

24:12 external world will be exactly in

24:16 consistence exactly in harmony with that

24:19 mental equivalent if you wish to change

24:21 your external reality to something

24:23 positive something wonderful something

24:25 happy something exciting the starting

24:27 point is to eliminate negative

24:30 influences eliminate the expression of

24:32 negative emotions get away from negative

24:35 people get away from negative books

24:37 negative magazines negative television

24:39 programs and keep your mind focused

24:41 singly on the things that you want to be

24:45 have and do this is the starting point

24:47 of mental health physical health and all

24:50 success and happiness in life
