00:16 a few years ago I felt like I was stuck

00:19 in a rut so I decided to follow in the

00:21 footsteps of the Great American

00:23 philosopher Morgan Spurlock and try

00:26 something new for 30 days the idea is

00:29 actually pretty simple think about

00:31 something you've always wanted to add to

00:33 your life and try it for the next 30

00:36 days it turns out 30 days is just about

00:39 the right amount of time to add a new

00:41 habit or subtract a habit like watching

00:44 the news from your life there's a few

00:46 things that I learned while doing these

00:48 30-day

00:49 challenges the first was instead of the

00:51 months flying by forgotten the time was

00:55 much more memorable this was part of a

00:58 challenge I did to take a picture every

00:59 day for a month and I remember exactly

01:02 where I was and what I was doing that

01:05 day I also noticed that as I started to

01:08 do more and harder 30-day challenges my

01:11 self-confidence grew I went from desk

01:13 dwelling computer nerd to the kind of

01:15 guy who bikes to work for

01:19 fun even last year I ended up hiking up

01:22 Mount kilamanjaro the highest mountain

01:24 in Africa I would never have been that

01:27 adventurous before I started my 30-day

01:29 challenge

01:31 I also figured out that if you really

01:34 want something badly enough you can do

01:36 anything for 30

01:38 days have you ever wanted to write a

01:41 novel every November tens of thousands

01:44 of people try to write their own

01:46 50,000-word novel from scratch in 30

01:49 days it turns out all you have to do is

01:53 write 1667 words a day for a

01:56 month so I did by the way secret is not

02:01 to go to sleep until you've written your

02:03 words for the day you might be sleep

02:05 deprived but you'll finish your

02:08 novel now is my book The Next Great

02:11 American novel no I wrote it in a month

02:15 it's

02:17 awful but for the rest of my life if I

02:20 meet John Hodgman at a Ted party I don't

02:22 have to say I'm a computer scientist no

02:26 no if I want to I can say I'm a novelist

02:30 [Applause]

02:33 so here's one last thing I'd like to

02:34 mention I learned that when I made small

02:37 sustainable changes things I could keep

02:39 doing they were more likely to stick

02:42 there's nothing wrong with big crazy

02:44 challenges in fact they're a ton of fun

02:48 but they're less likely to stick when I

02:50 gave up sugar for 30 days day 31 looked

02:54 like

02:56 this so here's my question to you what

03:00 are you waiting for I guarantee you the

03:02 next 30 days are going to pass whether

03:05 you like it or not so why not think

03:08 about something you have always wanted

03:10 to try and give it a shot for the next

03:14 30 days thanks
