Joseph Vincent · Watch on YouTube · Generated with SnapSummary · 2026-03-20

00:00 Roberto

00:01 Durant

00:02 coming from

00:04 Panama City, Panama. Roberto Durant.

00:10 He was the most macho fighter in boxing.

00:13 Those demonic black coal eyes.

00:16 Hands of stone. Roberto Duran.

00:19 Roberto Duran brings an intensity of

00:21 fire into the ring. Unprecedented in

00:22 ring history of South America. He's one

00:24 of the meanest looking fighters inside

00:26 the ring and he means it. Hands

00:31 of stone.

00:35 Acknowledged by most to be the greatest

00:38 lightweight in boxing history. He was a

00:41 terror who intimidated opponents with

00:44 sheer machismo.

00:50 You know, when I first saw, yeah, that's

00:52 who I wanted to be. Like, I know I

00:53 wanted to be a fighter, but then I saw

00:54 Roberto Durant. I said, "That's who the

00:56 I want to be. million mother people

00:59 scared to look at him the devil.

01:03 I mean he look at you with those dark

01:06 hollow cold eyes and he look right

01:11 through you and sometimes that was just

01:14 enough.

01:16 An intimidator who snatched souls like

01:19 Shang Tsung. Your soul is mine.

01:23 Monaster Pedra, hands of stone, Roberto

01:26 Duran,

01:33 you were you were born and raised in the

01:35 slums of of Panama, right?

01:36 They were very poor, so he had to go out

01:39 every day and try to make, you know,

01:41 living and sell newspapers or whatever

01:43 just to get by. Turning to boxing as a

01:46 means to earn a living, Duran had to

01:48 carry stones in his pockets in order to

01:51 make the 127 featherweight when he

01:53 debuted at age [music] 16.

02:05 Born in the slums of Panama, [music]

02:07 Duran and his family ran the streets day

02:10 and night, shining shoes and selling

02:13 papers to get by. [music]

02:15 He found an order in a disorderly

02:19 universe when he was a child in learning

02:23 how to fight.

02:36 So then you turn pro at 16, which I

02:38 guess in the US here would be pretty

02:39 young, but not so much there, right?

02:42 Poverty and despair have a way of

02:44 forging our greatest warriors.

02:47 Where do prize fighters come? They come

02:49 from desperate,

02:51 poor circumstance.

02:53 Nothing creates the hunger to succeed

02:56 like the hunger to eat. But Duran was

02:59 always my favorite just cuz he's a

03:01 animal, man.

03:11 What a great night and a great showing

03:13 for A FUTURE BRILLIANT STAR ON the

03:15 horizon, Roberto Duran.

03:23 Hands of stone. He was nicknamed Hands

03:27 of Stone early in his career for uh

03:31 obvious reasons.

03:41 His

03:50 aggressive, crowd-pleasing style [music]

03:52 made him an instant star in Panama.

03:55 And a man who is one, if not the

03:58 greatest lightweight champion of all

04:00 time.

04:01 Now listen, you could choose which

04:04 division. That's how great he is. He was

04:06 a champion at lightweight, welterweight,

04:10 junior middleweight, and I believe

04:11 middleweight. So, we're all set to go

04:14 with this one. It's a scheduled 10 round

04:16 junior lightweight battle special

04:17 attraction featuring the up and [music]

04:19 cominging Roberto Duran from right here

04:21 in Panama. Kobayashi comes in at [music]

04:24 60 wins, nine losses, four draws. I'm

04:26 Sheridan here with this sports classic

04:28 for you, Roberto Duran. And the reason I

04:30 call it a classic is because Roberto

04:32 Durant is going to be a future champion

04:35 of the world.

04:41 Look at that. He backs him up. Big shot

04:46 and drops the CHAMP. ROBERTO DURANT HAS

04:48 HIM DOWN. HE'S NOT GOING TO MAKE IT. 6 7

04:51 8 9 AND HE'S COUNTING OUT TO 10 under

04:55 the ground. They love ROBERTO DURANT.

04:59 HE'S GOING TO BE a great champion. I'll

05:01 tell you folks, if he gets that shot

05:03 they're talking about against the

05:05 lightweight champion Kenny Buchanan of

05:07 Scotland, it'll be terrific.

05:09 And intimidated that we hadn't seen

05:11 since Sunny Listen. Roberto Duran had

05:14 that we just had it guys cold and just

05:20 made them kind of like evaporate

05:25 speed. People don't throw him fast, but

05:27 he's very fast.

05:32 ferocity and savage punching has great

05:34 anticipation of punching. He's just all

05:36 around marvel in the ring.

05:41 Some people will take this spirit out

05:43 just like be one of those kung fu

05:45 movements where the guy just put his

05:46 hand right through your chest.

05:50 Boom. Perfect timing.

05:56 He punched this guy so hard he messed up

05:59 the tracking on this VHS.

06:03 In his first title shot, Duran would

06:06 take on fellow legend Ken Buchanan in

06:09 New York City. He was back in New York

06:12 to fight lightweight champion Ken

06:13 Buchanan.

06:17 The champion Ken Buchanan of Edinburgh,

06:20 Scotland and the challenger Roberto

06:22 Duran of Panama City, Panama. The

06:25 champion, he's proud

06:29 10

06:31 15

06:33 championship.

06:38 The challenger is working on a

06:40 percentage.

06:50 And yes, it is. Johnny scores it. A

06:52 knockdown.

06:55 I don't know of any other fighter who

06:56 was quite that wild in the ring. And

06:59 yet, he was in control of himself as a

07:01 boxer.

07:02 Durant almost as fresh as when he

07:04 started.

07:07 He battered the champion over 12 rounds.

07:16 Now Durant the challenger is just

07:18 dynamite with his right hand.

07:23 Round 13.

07:24 Buchanan collapsed at the end of the

07:26 round and the fight was stopped.

07:35 Cannon went down after the bell

07:38 holding his groin.

07:43 The fight has been stopped.

07:46 The fight has been stopped. And the

07:48 winner, 21-YEAR-OLD

07:51 ROBERTO Duran of Panama. [music]

07:55 Roberto Duran was now the lightweight

07:58 champion of the world.

08:00 There's pandemonium in the ring

08:03 as people are trying to get in there.

08:08 He was celebrated as a hero upon

08:11 returning to Panama.

08:13 When he returned home, they declared a

08:14 national holiday.

08:16 Hands of Stone began a reign of

08:18 dominance over the lightweight [music]

08:19 division that would last 5 years.

08:29 But you are a great defensive fighter

08:30 and I don't think people talk about that

08:32 often, but you you were able to stand in

08:35 the pocket and make people miss you and

08:37 that was part of you. Your offense was

08:39 having such a great defense.

08:46 Ran is is called I mean if we read the

08:48 sports pages here, one of the toughest

08:50 punchers uh for his weight is a brawler

08:53 street fighter. Somebody said it's like

08:54 being hit by a rock to be hit by this

08:56 guy. One knockout after another.

08:59 The ram is called hands of stone and he

09:02 can really rip you. The left hook is his

09:04 big one.

09:05 Propelled by a fury unlike few have ever

09:08 possessed.

09:11 Duran ran his record up to an

09:13 astonishing 821.

09:16 Great like Joe Lewis, all of those great

09:18 fighters from the 30s. Roberto Duran has

09:21 qualities of each one. And here you're

09:22 talking about a a fighter that's only 20

09:25 years old and you're and you're

09:26 comparing him with some of the greats of

09:28 all time. The Robinsons as you said, the

09:29 Louiswises and the Ali shows you what a

09:32 great fighter is.

09:32 Harry Greb, all of those mer fighters,

09:35 the men that stood right in front of you

09:37 like he's doing now. He knows he's got

09:39 this man in charge. He is punishing him.

09:42 Hands of steel, hands of stone. Either

09:44 way, he is one of the heaviest punches

09:46 for a little man that's ever been seen.

09:48 You're trying to take his home and his

09:50 money and his wife when you get in the

09:51 ring with him. He says you got to kill

09:53 him.

10:07 I think his first loss was to Esonte

10:09 Jesus. He lost a 10-m round decision. At

10:13 last, Duran would get a chance to avenge

10:17 that loss.

10:19 The Cena's Panama City, there's better

10:21 than 15,300

10:23 on hand for this lightweight title. It

10:26 is a big fight. It is revenge in the

10:29 heart of Duran to stop this man. The

10:31 lightweight championship of the world.

10:34 Roberto Duran against Estaban De Jesus.

10:37 De Jesus calm, collected.

10:40 hands of stone ready to come out looking

10:44 and the bell for round one.

10:50 Estebon dropped Durant in the first

10:52 round.

10:57 I can't believe he's down for the hook.

10:59 A perfect hook. They're both exchanging

11:02 savage hooks. That's toe-to-toe action.

11:04 Durant would [music] have to dig deep to

11:06 overcome his rifle. Both mean business,

11:09 but Durant is throwing everything he's

11:11 got this punch. The Jesus is a little

11:13 bit more measured, a little bit cooler

11:15 about everything.

11:18 [music]

11:19 He can beat you, man. He's the only man

11:21 to have done it. He matched against the

11:24 Jesus and knocked out the Jesus

11:26 uh back in the days when they went 15

11:29 rounds.

11:30 OH, NOW THE SAME PUNCH THAT OUT IN ROUND

11:34 ONE. A devastating barn burner so far

11:36 and it doesn't show any signs of letting

11:39 up. [music]

11:45 [music]

11:52 He knocked the hes out in Panama out

11:57 for a right hand. THE COUNT IS BEING

11:59 PICKED UP. HE LOOKS LIKE he's not

12:01 getting up. He's sitting down very

12:02 comfortably. He's not getting up. HE

12:04 CANNOT. IT'S ALL OVER. It's over. THEY

12:06 HAVE AWARDED IT TO ROBERTO DURAN. HE

12:08 KEEPS HIS TITLE. ROBERTO DURAN, THE

12:10 VICTOR IN HIS HOMETOWN in Panama. Hands

12:13 of Stone reigned over the lightweight

12:16 division [music] for 5 years as

12:18 undisputed champion.

12:21 Thank you very much, Tom. Today's match

12:22 marks Duran's sixth defense of the title

12:24 he won by stopping Kim Buchanan back in

12:26 1972.

12:32 He defended his title 12 times,

12:35 accumulating a record of 62 and one

12:42 with 54 wins coming by way of knockout.

12:46 His fights were must-see events in

12:49 Panama where he was revered as a hero.

13:01 With each spectacular knockout, his star

13:04 rose.

13:08 Oh, he's out.

13:10 They should have knocked him out.

13:13 The entire [music] boxing world wanted

13:15 to witness the famed Hands of Stone.

13:20 Nobody cared in those days about

13:24 unbeaten.

13:26 What they cared about is what Duran did,

13:28 which is you fight the best guys [music]

13:31 out there.

13:32 You and he fought so many great fighters

13:35 at so many weight classes.

13:38 Fernandez to the right of your screen

13:47 is dynamite.

13:49 He had great reflexes, great defense. He

13:52 was aggressive, but he was an aggressive

13:55 counter puncher, an aggressive boxer.

13:57 [music]

13:57 Not only was he aggressive, but he break

14:00 it down. A great body puncher, good

14:02 [music] hand speed, great technique.

14:09 That hurt. No question. That was a lift

14:12 up in the liver. That's one of the

14:15 toughest shots to take in boxing.

14:18 He's out. He's not going to get up. A

14:20 kidney shot by Roberto L.

14:25 [music]

14:30 The lightweight champion of the world.

14:32 His sixth title defense. He's knocked

14:33 out 40 of 50 people. He's fought 10.

14:35 Young Ortiz from Mexico stay in there

14:37 within the defense.

14:38 Well, I tell you, it's going to be an

14:39 interesting fight for the simple reason.

14:41 I don't know if Durant can handle a

14:42 southpaw.

14:43 He's lost just once in his career in an

14:45 over thee match. And he later reversed

14:47 that same decision. Duran is 24. Ortiz

14:49 is 26, so age should not be too much of

14:52 a factor.

14:52 Ortiz was viewed as a real threat to

14:55 Duran.

14:57 I'm very intrigued by this fight. I'm

14:58 watching Duran. He's not his usual

15:00 confident self.

15:01 A skilled southpaw who is known for his

15:04 toughness.

15:05 Remember 135 is the limit for the

15:08 lightweight championship bout. Round

15:10 number one.

15:12 We're on

15:15 Duran. He is strong and he likes to

15:18 fight. A right hand gets through on RT

15:20 Duran. Believe him.

15:23 Look at the back on this young man. 135

15:26 lbs and he's nothing but layers of

15:27 muscle across that back.

15:29 Battering him round after round.

15:32 This back to you. 135 lbs. A fighting

15:36 machine. He likes it.

15:44 Oh, and the challenger is down with a

15:46 right hand uppercut.

15:48 17 seconds left in the round and they're

15:50 counting now. It's over. A knockout with

15:54 14 seconds left. Roberto Durant is a

15:57 champion. Still the champion of the

15:59 world among the lightweights.

16:02 Roberto, he was in Rocky, too. And he's

16:04 [music] supposedly Rocky's sparring

16:06 partner. The way he could move his head

16:09 just an inch, it's impossible to hit

16:13 him. A grudge match [music] with

16:15 Estabban De Jesus was set.

16:19 A final fight to settle the rivalry once

16:22 and for all.

16:34 [screaming]

16:41 as a lightweight. I think he was

16:44 unbeatable as a lightweight, although he

16:46 had his greatest fight as a

16:48 welterweight. A touching side story to

16:51 this rivalry was how close these two

16:54 warriors became. Estabban died of AIDS

16:57 [music] and in a time when the disease

17:00 was shrouded in misinformation,

17:02 Duran lovingly embraced his [music]

17:04 greatest rival and told him he would

17:07 always be the champ.

17:13 Roberto was now struggling to make the

17:16 135 weight. He began ballooning between

17:19 [music] fights. All right, let's go and

17:21 see at Madison Square Garden the great

17:23 fight between Roberto Duran and Monroe

17:25 Brooks. And Francancy Durant looks to me

17:27 to be a little heavy around the waist. I

17:29 wonder how fit he is for this fight. He

17:32 would see a right hand coming and just

17:33 [music] ride with it

17:34 and then return fire.

17:36 Yeah, come right back.

17:39 And then he could tie you up in the

17:41 inside, tie one arm up, work you over,

17:43 spin you around, pivot

17:45 from Madison Square Garden, New York,

17:47 round eight scheduled for 10

17:52 just standing in there flatfooted now

17:54 measuring

18:01 a hard lift to the body.

18:06 That's it. It's all over. Arthur McCanni

18:08 says, "Sorry, Monroe. You've really had

18:11 enough. It was a lift to the body."

18:14 Despite his historic reign, Duran was

18:17 still relatively low paid. If Duran

18:20 wanted to make millions, he would need

18:22 to move up to welterweight and take on

18:25 bigger names.

18:26 Nobody wanted to fight him. There were

18:28 no opponents and they would wait for him

18:31 to get weight and then try to make him

18:34 fight. Nobody will spark him. Roberto

18:36 Duran hardly needs any advertisement.

18:39 The undisputed lightweight champion of

18:42 the world. He outgrew in weight the

18:45 lightweight classification. He's moved

18:47 on upward to this the welterweight

18:50 classification. Regaled by the press and

18:53 deservedly so as the fighter of the

18:56 decade of the 70s. 70 fights in all, 69

19:01 victories. And Roberto Durant attempting

19:03 to prove he can make that transition

19:06 from 135 to 147 lbs. Of course, a legend

19:10 as the lightweight champ.

19:16 In the crowd, Sugar Ray Leonard

19:19 witnessed Duran taking more shots than

19:22 normal, sparking the idea that Duran was

19:26 vulnerable.

19:31 Good exchange in which Willington got in

19:33 a couple of good combinations. Roberto

19:35 got in his usual sledgehammer

19:47 completely down for the first time in

19:49 his career. Roberto Durant with a

19:52 tremendous combination has ended.

19:54 Leonard saw a chance to knock out Duran

19:57 because Duran was slower at the higher

20:00 weight,

20:00 but he wasn't as strong as he's going to

20:02 be. The last fight he wasn't quite as

20:04 strong. This fight he's strong and the

20:05 next fight he's going to be very strong.

20:07 As I told you, the monster is loose and

20:09 on the way to the title.

20:10 Leonard knew what knocking out the famed

20:13 hands [music] of Stone would do for his

20:15 reputation. I am I think that um after

20:18 this particular fight, the press will

20:21 realize that the guys that they say

20:23 Sugar can't deal with or this guy's too

20:26 strong for Sugar, Sugar can't punch,

20:29 Sugar has not been in the ring with

20:31 anyone that is a legitimate fighter.

20:34 These statements I will be able to

20:35 [music] silence completely once and for

20:38 all. And so the super fight [music]

20:40 between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto

20:43 Duran was set. Sugar Ray thought he was

20:47 facing a big name on the downside of his

20:50 career.

20:53 He thought wrong.

20:57 We were watching the news.

21:00 Sugar. Sugar. Sugar.

21:02 I think I think he's made an order for

21:04 Sugar Ray. I think Durant because his

21:07 his style, he walks in, you know, right

21:09 off and the other fell so fast and he's

21:11 such a great boxer.

21:12 Few [music] gave Durant a chance.

21:14 She rather stop him. Why? I think you're

21:18 a much better fighter than

22:03 in the boxing game is listed as the nine

22:05 to five favorite among the odds makers.

22:10 Truly motivated by [music] a real

22:12 challenge, hands of stone was ready.

22:16 Well, Sugar Ray Leonard, who fights with

22:17 a flare, and Roberto Duran, who fights

22:19 with a fury, square off tomorrow night

22:21 in Montreal for the WBC welterweight

22:23 title. In Panama, the entire country

22:27 watched their [music] hero.

22:29 It would be a historic clash.

22:33 Most of the world believed Duran would

22:35 be outmatched against Sugar Ray at

22:38 welterweight.

22:40 I've talked to fighters that have fought

22:41 him and everyone underestimates him.

22:44 They think they can win until they're in

22:47 the ring with them.

22:48 Jugger Ray Leonard defending against the

22:51 challenger Roberto Durant.

22:55 [music]

22:58 There Roberto Duran in his dressing

23:01 room. Intense. He has approached this

23:04 fight with an almost religious furball.

23:08 He was repl

23:11 against the undefeated, ever popular Ray

23:14 Leonard.

23:16 Beats him.

23:34 Lynn was a welterweight. He got beat by

23:36 Roberto Duran who was a lightweight.

23:39 Hands of Stone had defeated the

23:40 previously undefeated Sugar Ray Leonard

23:42 to become the welterweight champion of

23:45 the world.

23:47 The new champ signed autographs and

23:49 talked [music] to friends in Midtown

23:51 Manhattan. Roberto Duran, hero and giant

23:54 killer. [music]

23:59 He won the first fight with Sugar Ray.

24:01 He was on top of [music] the world. He

24:03 was the king. He went out and started

24:06 doing what he does when he's not

24:07 fighting, partying, eating, drinking.

24:11 How much did he blow up? What' you say?

24:13 I forget. I think he was close to 40

24:15 lbs. And so, so Ray so Ry demanded that

24:19 the rematch be in 6 weeks. So, you know,

24:22 Duran is in New York just partying it up

24:24 for like 3 weeks. They call him from

24:27 from Panama, say, "Hey, you got to come

24:28 and train. You fight. You're fighting in

24:30 3 weeks." and he was close to 200 lb.

24:33 From where Burle comes and making that

24:36 little bit of money fighting as a

24:38 lightweight for all [music] them years

24:39 and not making millions, he wasn't going

24:42 to pass it up.

24:43 But this guy gains weight and loses

24:45 weight faster than anybody. This side of

24:48 well this side of Tommy Lorta.

24:49 He was out of training after a fight. He

24:51 put on tremendous amounts [music] of

24:53 weight. I mean 30 40 lb over what he

24:55 should be fighting at.

24:56 He doesn't like to train anymore. He

24:58 sometimes appeared listless, even

25:00 uncoordinated.

25:02 Unable to pass up the massive payday,

25:04 Duran took a fight he knew he [music]

25:06 couldn't properly prepare for.

25:08 He fluctuates in weight so badly. Back

25:10 in October, Roberto Duran may have

25:12 weighed as much as 190 lbs.

25:14 But he catches a right to left lands.

25:17 All right, that's the Ray Leonard

25:20 punches through the crowd. These two men

25:22 do not like each other.

25:25 This time, Leonard danced. What I heard

25:27 he was up to pretty close to 200 lb from

25:30 147 to 200.

25:32 Leonard came the fight and as you said

25:34 Larry confidence personified very

25:36 confident. If he can do this for 15

25:39 rounds

25:40 then you have a new champion.

25:43 Praying on Duran's lack of conditioning.

25:47 Leonard made a joke of the fight.

25:52 He showboated and mocked hands of stone.

25:58 doing a little dodgy now and a little

26:00 Ali.

26:02 He's taunting Durant. As the fight

26:05 progressed, Duran knew he was simply in

26:09 no [music] shape to fight.

26:15 And he's got Durant openly, not just

26:18 furious, but puzzled. He's taunting

26:22 Durant.

26:26 troubled by the moment.

26:29 He say when the Sugar Ray started

26:31 clowning around, he said, "That's it.

26:36 There's going to be a third fight. And

26:37 in the third fight, I'm going to be the

26:39 real me again."

26:41 The infamous moment.

26:42 And what's happening? Durant says, "No,

26:46 no."

26:46 I think he's quitting. He said, "No

26:49 more." And then he did it a second time.

26:52 He's saying no. No, he quit. I don't

26:54 understand it. I think Durant quit. I

26:57 don't understand. Duran has quit.

27:00 Roberto Durant has quit.

27:02 Angry at being made to look the fool.

27:05 Duran uttered the famous words and quit.

27:09 No respect for him [music] as far as a

27:10 man's concerned. I respect him as a

27:12 fighter. Don't get me wrong. I respect

27:13 him as a fighter and as his

27:15 accomplishments, his credentials, but as

27:17 a man, I don't I can't how can I

27:34 stain on Duran's [music]

27:35 character Duran after the Nomas fight

27:38 became a pariah. He was despised by most

27:42 of his countrymen.

27:43 Even his own countrymen [music]

27:45 turned against him.

27:50 The stink of Na still hung over Duran

27:54 [music] when he challenged the unbeaten

27:56 WBA 154 champion Davy Moore.

28:10 Baby Mo to come back after after no m

28:14 and everybody was like ah he's on his

28:15 way out and then do what he did. It just

28:18 that right there was inspiration for me

28:20 like man.

28:23 [music]

28:28 It was less of a fight

28:30 and more of a therapeutic release for

28:33 Duran.

28:53 Heat up

28:54 here.

29:03 Wow, look at this. Oh, how focused.

29:08 All the anger of no boss was unleashed

29:12 on the unsuspecting champion Davy Moore.

29:16 [music]

29:18 The spectacular win put Duran back in

29:21 the limelight.

29:23 This prompted the marvelous one to give

29:26 Duran a title shot. You can hear this

29:28 crowd very much apparently in the corner

29:32 of Roberto Duran. Be prepared for a play

29:34 st.

29:37 Listen to this crowd. The crowd is

29:39 absolutely electric.

29:41 A fight no one gave Duran any [music]

29:43 chance in

29:45 scoring more effectively there. That was

29:47 a good left hand to the body and there's

29:48 a good right hand by Durant. Duran was

29:51 well out of his natural weight class

29:54 and was now waiting into some serious

29:57 deep water against the far bigger Marvin

30:01 Haggler.

30:04 That time it was Haggler with a counter

30:06 punch right hand.

30:07 Haggler was an action fighter who never

30:10 ran from back and forth exchanges.

30:14 And there was a left hand says no I'm

30:16 not hurt. For the substantially smaller

30:18 [music] Durant to go the distance with

30:21 this beast during the height of his

30:23 reign was simply remarkable.

30:28 If you want this fight,

30:32 let the give it to you.

30:41 And still

30:45 the strong showing in the Haggler fight

30:48 prompted another big day for Duran

30:50 against Thomas the Hitman Hearns. Duran

30:55 had never been knocked out.

30:58 He has returned as Thomas the Hitman.

31:02 Yeah, [cheering] you got these two guns

31:04 coming out, you know, playing the

31:06 Eastwood. You're going to have a

31:08 shootout. You're just going to have a

31:10 shootout.

31:13 Round one then. Roberto Duran in the

31:15 You remember the old westerns,

31:18 the gunslingers,

31:20 you know, that was Clint Eastwood with

31:22 that music. Can you do that music for

31:23 me?

31:25 Hearns was 25 and in his prime. Duran

31:30 was 33 [music]

31:32 and well over his natural weight class

31:38 against Roberto Duran when you knocked

31:39 him far out.

31:40 That's going to be it. That's going to

31:43 be IN IN THE SECOND HAS DONE WHAT he

31:46 said he'd do.

31:47 Duran's a guy who had never been knocked

31:49 out. learned. And now one round all

31:51 those people that doubted him and

31:53 doubted his charisma and doubted his

31:56 fighting ability by stopping one of the

31:58 toughest fighters. The game has ever

32:01 seen in the second round, but his

32:04 punching was explosive.

32:06 And the Hitman did what he's become

32:08 famous for.

32:09 The knockout [music] seemed like the

32:11 end.

32:13 Sidebar, I've got a pretty sick

32:15 documentary on Tommy here on this very

32:17 YouTube channel you're watching.

32:24 At age 38, Duran took a fight against

32:27 the WBC middleweight champion, the

32:31 Blade, Iran Barkley. Barkley had just

32:35 demolished Tommy Hearns.

32:43 You know, Al, there's a saying in

32:45 boxing. A fighter can look like he's in

32:47 great condition. All of a sudden, he

32:48 walks up the stairs, the bell rings, and

32:50 he doesn't have it anymore. That's

32:52 happened to Roberto Duran like three

32:53 times. This is going to be some test for

32:55 a 37y old guy against a tough guy like

32:58 Kyan Barkley.

32:59 Many suspected this fight would be the

33:01 final nail in the coffin of Duran's

33:04 career.

33:07 It appeared his glory days were long

33:09 gone.

33:11 There she is.

33:15 So he was and still is. He's the most

33:18 famous panamanian today.

33:22 He's still the hero of the Latino

33:25 boxing.

33:26 Didn't matter. He's panameanian. He can

33:28 Mexican Puerto Rican.

33:31 Oh, he's out.

33:33 God, they sure had a [ __ ] memory.

33:36 Roberto Durant continued fighting for

33:39 many more years, ultimately finishing

33:42 with a record of 103 wins, 16 defeats,

33:46 and 17 knockouts.

33:52 Considered by many to be the greatest

33:54 lightweight ever, pound from bound, the

33:57 best fight of the last two decades.

34:06 A man who intimidates opponents with

34:08 those angry eyes.

34:13 Roberto Durant.

34:28 Hands of stone.

34:31 Nobody brings it home like it show.

34:34 Nobody.

34:35 Make it so.
