00:00 i'm going to give you six mindset tips

00:03 to help you overcome your public

00:05 speaking anxiety and nerves by at least

00:07 50

00:08 these tips will help you cut your

00:09 anxiety in half and that's a great start

00:17 i'd like to tell you about two resources

00:19 the first is a free pdf download with

00:22 seven instant tips for more confident

00:24 and composed speaking i also have a

00:27 number of online classes on things like

00:29 public speaking and communication skills

00:32 and leadership and there's always at

00:34 least one free class that you can take

00:36 i'll put links to all of those resources

00:38 in the description below this video

00:40 there are two main inroads to your

00:43 public speaking anxiety

00:45 and the first is changing your mindset

00:47 the second is changing your behavior or

00:49 the concrete actions that you take you

00:51 can start at either entry point in this

00:54 feedback loop because your mindset and

00:57 your behavior reinforce each other in

00:59 this video i'll be giving you six tips

01:01 all about mindset or how you think if

01:03 you can change the way you think about

01:05 public speaking you'll change the way

01:07 you feel

01:08 in a follow-up video i'll give you six

01:10 more tips that are all behavioral based

01:13 that's another way to get at this

01:15 anxiety and when that one's ready i will

01:17 post it and put a link to it in the

01:19 description below and i'll put a summary

01:20 of these six tips at the end first

01:23 realize that anxiety and nervousness are

01:26 not signs of trouble

01:28 these are just signs that you're about

01:30 to do something important

01:32 we don't get nervous about meaningless

01:35 activities even professionals get

01:37 nervous i was reading an interview with

01:40 the world famous and veteran actor

01:42 michael douglas

01:44 and he said i'm always nervous when i

01:46 have to do public speaking and i have

01:48 now gotten used to my nerves and how to

01:51 deal with it but it's part of the

01:52 excitement so even rich famous and

01:55 normally confident people get nervous

01:57 about public speaking

01:59 it's not a sign of trouble or that

02:01 there's something wrong with you

02:03 second realize that you're only about

02:04 half as nervous as you think the other

02:07 half is called excitement there are two

02:10 sides of the same emotional coin

02:13 i heard a consultant the other day say

02:15 that she has grown to like the

02:17 butterflies in her stomach before she

02:19 presents she said it reminds her that

02:21 she's challenging herself

02:23 it's the same with acting playing guitar

02:26 or sports in front of a crowd a lot of

02:28 those feelings are excitement after

02:30 people speak and the anxiety is gone

02:32 they still feel excited about what they

02:34 just did

02:35 so the mindset tip is not to talk to

02:38 yourself about how nervous you are

02:40 instead talk to yourself about how at

02:42 least half of what you're feeling is

02:43 excitement those butterflies are proof

02:46 that you're alive

02:48 and about to do something special number

02:50 three realize that you do not look on

02:52 the outside as nervous as you feel on

02:54 the inside your listeners can't tell how

02:57 you feel

02:58 they can only see what you show them and

03:00 i've asked hundreds of speakers right

03:03 after they speak how nervous did you

03:04 feel on a scale of one to ten they

03:06 usually say eight nine or ten

03:08 but the listeners routinely say that the

03:10 speaker only looks about two or three

03:13 out of ten on that anxiety scale so once

03:15 you realize that you don't come across

03:17 nearly as nervous as you feel that's

03:19 half the battle

03:21 i saw sylvester stallone rocky talking

03:23 about giving a big speech before he

03:25 spoke he said his heart was pounding he

03:27 was really nervous his adult daughter

03:29 was with him and she looked out at the

03:31 huge crowd and she said to him dad i

03:33 don't know how you can be so calm i'd be

03:36 freaking out

03:37 so he was nervous but he said to her no

03:40 no it's going to be fine i've got this

03:42 his own daughter couldn't tell that he

03:44 was having that spike of anxiety right

03:47 before he spoke

03:48 the takeaway is to play it cool like

03:51 rocky other people really can't tell and

03:54 that's one less thing for you to worry

03:56 about and fourth the peak or spike of

03:59 nervousness lasts less than 60 seconds

04:02 the hardest part is usually the

04:03 anticipation the waiting a teacher i

04:06 know andrea newman talks about that

04:08 spike of nervousness that happens right

04:10 before we speak and right up until about

04:13 30 seconds into our message that's when

04:15 we feel the most intense anxiety that

04:18 spike of nerves goes down drastically

04:20 once we get rolling it's just like a

04:22 professional football quarterback their

04:24 anxiety is highest right before the big

04:27 game and up through the first few plays

04:29 and then they settle into their game

04:31 plan so the mindset tip is to remind

04:33 yourself that you'll feel much better

04:36 just moments after you start your

04:37 presentation number five accept that

04:40 anxiety and nervousness are not a

04:43 barrier from doing an outstanding job

04:46 many speakers mistakenly believe that if

04:48 they're nervous then they can't do a

04:49 good job

04:50 but it's just not true almost every

04:53 athlete for example will admit to

04:55 getting nervous before a big game

04:57 anxiety doesn't stop them from

04:59 performing well winning or losing games

05:02 has nothing to do with how nervous a

05:05 team is beforehand

05:06 and the same goes for public speaking

05:09 some of the best professional speakers

05:11 in the world admit to getting really

05:13 nervous but their nerves don't stop them

05:15 from completely crushing it so accept

05:18 that anxiety is not a barrier to doing a

05:21 superior presentation number six assume

05:24 that everybody is rooting for you

05:27 virtually everybody wants you to do well

05:29 we drastically overestimate the negative

05:32 judgment or possible embarrassment we

05:35 could experience the truth is i'd say

05:37 that 99 of listeners are sympathetic

05:40 they've all done some public speaking

05:42 they know what it's like

05:44 and i say 99 because sometimes you will

05:47 see people with an unpleasant facial

05:49 expression but even those people are

05:51 probably just like that that negative

05:53 face that you see

05:55 maybe that's just the way they are

05:57 that's not about you they're probably

05:58 just having a bad day so assume that

06:01 everybody wants you to succeed and they

06:04 are on your side and here again are all

06:06 six mindset tips your mindset is all

06:09 about changing the way you think about

06:11 public speaking and it's usually a

06:13 necessary step to overcoming anxiety so

06:16 my question of the day for you is which

06:18 of these do you believe would help you

06:20 make the most immediate progress

06:23 feel free to post your comment below

06:25 and as mentioned i have a follow-up

06:27 video coming out soon about the six

06:30 behavioral tips to reduce speaking

06:32 anxiety i'll put a link to that as well

06:34 as other resources in the description

06:36 below as soon as that video is ready

06:38 both mindset changes and behavioral

06:41 changes are starting points

06:44 that will get you on a more positive and

06:46 confident feedback loop so thanks for

06:48 watching god bless and i will see you in

06:50 the next video
