Yes guys, welcome back to honest day
book making. We're here at Royal Ascot
on the final day. I'm joined by Khan,
head of book making, head of on course
book making for Star Sports. Khan, talk
me through the week. Are you battered
and bruised or are you eating steak for
dinner?
>> I think we're more battered and bruised.
It's like a scene out of Saving Private
Ryan. It's It's been a very very tough
week. I mean, you wouldn't believe after
three races we were 50,000 pound up. 10
bob Tony
was a wonderful result and we thought if
this is a sign of things to come, we'll
be in the Ritz by Friday. Well,
unfortunately they were camping in the
middle of the track last night the guys
because we took an absolute battering
all week. Day one obviously Beau Echo
won and on the day I think we done
around 150,000
pounds. Day two Ombudsman won. We done
about 200,000 pounds. Day three
we added a bit more damage. Scandinavia,
we knocked out around quarter of a
million. So we're half a million behind
after three days and we thought right
yesterday's a few short ones. This is
This is either going to be fantastic or
we're going to be stretchered off and
unfortunately precise winning and
Causeway winning, we laid two monstrous
bets and we're now nearly a million
pounds behind on the week.
>> A million pounds behind, my heart bleeds
for you. Um one thing I've one thing
I've always wondered is like how much
cash do you have to bring? If I wanted
to come and have 250 grand on, would you
pay me out in cash or how how would you
>> Obviously from a compliance point of
view we we'd be obviously that sort of
the these type of bets are laid to
clients that are well known and and have
run through all that sort of
documentation.
Um but we have large customers come up,
we do checks um and and we speak to
them, check they're okay and you know
If they If they want to bet we're at
Royal Ascot, we're at Cheltenham.
We've seen some good bets this week as
as with every bookmaker. It's It's quite
worrying that I've had a few bookmakers
come up to me and say they're actually
doing okay. I mean, the most of them
around me are saying they're in the
they're in bad positions. I mean, not to
the levels we are. We want to promote
the ring. You know,
when you see this place today in the
last few days, it's absolutely buzzing.
And it's a great pastime. Horse racing,
dog racing, sport. People love a flutter
as well. And it doesn't matter any
stake, we'll take
from a change point of view, we don't
want to keep doing all the changing the
one pound coins, but if somebody wants a
pound each way and they've got the
change, we'll take it. And we'll take
any bit up. Look, yesterday we took six
figure bets, so we'll take them top to
bottom.
>> And what is your biggest bet you've laid
so far this week?
>> We laid a 330,000 pound bet at 10 to 11
Causeway yesterday, which at one point
we thought the Amore Racing horse was
going to save our day. Well, it save our
day, you know, give a little bit back,
but we'd already done
laid a 275,000
pound bet at 8 to 11 on Precise earlier
in the day, so on the day we managed to
knock out nearly half a million
yesterday. So, yeah, the the shoulders
are dropped from the team. Morale is
low. One of our team members today is is
his birthday. He's
He's He's nearly at some big big
numbers. We couldn't put any candles on
it for safety. We bought him two donuts
to try and liven the team up. So, it's
been a it's been a really tough week.
>> Okay, well, this is obviously the final
leg. You're either going to finish in
clover or behind. I'm going to be
showing all the figures and seeing how
the guys end up.
>> Couple of horses you need to get beat
today. Who are they?
>> They're the two short ones, Sabre Star
and two names elude me.
>> The Australian sprinter.
>> Yeah, the Australian sprinter. The Jolly
Star. Look, they're they're 6 to 4, 13
to 8. We want these big punters coming
in again today because at this point,
look, the boss says it's only Lent,
we'll go again. We had a wonderful
Cheltenham, we had a wonderful Greyhound
Derby. We have bad weeks. I mean, this
is a really bad week, but it's it's the
long game we play. We're here, as I
said, we're trying to promote the
betting ring for all.
If anyone out there ever wanted to do
it, come and get involved. It's it's a
wonderful sport. Right, well, as you
said, you had a great Cheltenham, you
had a great Greyhound Derby. This one is
for the punters. I'm cheering on the
shorties. Let's see how we get on.
>> Okay, so the horses are down at the
start. How how are we looking for the
first?
>> Uh lively lively opener. Obviously, the
favorite in here Carry The Flag for the
Aidan O'Brien fan club.
It's It's It's been very We've got it at
the minute as a loser for 79,000. We've
laid a 25,000 pound bet at 3 to 1. The
early business we laid 5,000 at 12 to 1
Fanshawe Bay. So, we're looking to get
them beat. They're very red at the
minute in the book.
We don't want to see any purple colors
going past in front of us.
>> Okay, so if Carry The Flag wins, you
lose 79 grand. If Fanshawe Bay
wins, you lose 28 grand. Anything else
is a 30 grand winner.
>> Yes, sir. Or a little bit more for the
the ones down of it. Anything else, give
us a break.
>> Come on. Come on the jolly. Let's get
the favorite over to the first.
Okay, we are off and running.
That's not good. Fanshawe Bay is in
Oh, yeah, you're leading at the
Your big loser is leading. It's in the
middle, Fanshawe Bay. Far side orange,
Agamon.
We need this one to come out the crowd.
Down the middle, Orthodox. That will do.
Goliath pops, Orthodox wins the first.
Is that a good result?
>> It's a good result.
>> 31,270.
>> should have been here all week.
>> Okay, so as things stand, plus 31,270
on race number one.
>> It is indeed, yeah. That's a good start.
We were a bit worried there about two
furlongs out cuz the original bogey was
just in front. But, it's absolutely
flown home down the middle of the track,
isn't it? Orthodox.
It starts balls. There's nothing
Orthodox about us.
>> [laughter]
>> All right, it's 1-0 to the bookies. On
race number two, how are we looking?
>> Uh, quite lively again. Kelp Forest
they've come for. I'm just going to get
the slip.
We have laid 30,000 at 5 to 2 Kelp
Forest. So, we don't really want to see
the Juddmonte winner who was a twice
winner on Champions Day, I believe.
>> And is that the only the only red one in
the book?
>> That is the only red one. It currently
loses us 70,000 pounds. I just need to
check the runners are off the board.
They are. The QR code they can
advertise.
Everything else is green. So, think
that's that's the one that's the late
money. That's the one we're probably
cheering on. Okay, 72,958
in the red if Calparno can win for
Juddmonte. Let's see how this plays out.
>> Turning for home, are you happy or are
you worried?
>> I'm a little bit worried that the the
money mover is tail is at the back of
the [laughter] minute. It would have
been a little bit closer.
>> Calparno is
>> Calparno is third on the outside. The
American horse hasn't really been
touched though at the back. That's the
Goliath and the Christophe Soumillon. He
always leaves it late.
>> Calparno is absolutely cantering on the
bridle.
>> Yeah, and and our one can't get out.
They're all coming with a run down the
middle.
>> They are indeed.
You need something to come out of the
clouds.
You might have left it too late, the
French guy.
Oh, it's going to be A GOOD FINISH.
A ROAR FROM THE CROWD.
CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON'S GOING TO GET
THERE, IS HE?
>> [cheering]
>> OH, YES.
>> SAVED BY CHRISTOPHE SOUMILLON. He
breathes a big sigh of relief. That's a
good one.
>> It's a good one, but I don't know if
we'll make it up for us.
>> Yeah, blimey. That was close.
>> I'll just show you that So, look, if we
go into the books,
we've got
That was the result there. I'm going to
wait for the result to go in. What
happens now is I will enter the result
button there and I will put the three
select places in. They will come up and
it will tell me the tally ready for the
guys to start paying out in a minute.
>> I mean, it shows how busy it is here
that the crowd never know. You'll hear a
roar when this is announced.
Maybe not such a roar.
One One for us, I think.
>> So, that's the results there that are
just coming out. The guys on the front,
they'll put that now on a spike, which
will tell them the results and it has
all the ticket numbers for all of our
three pitches in the track. As you can
see, we've already got customers here.
The betting in front of you is also uh
for the big race of the day, but they
will now scan the tickets as they come
up. It will tell me on the computer, but
there's no need to look at the computer
cuz there's no rule for it's as it is on
the slip. They will now they know the
result, they'll pay out, or someone will
have another bet.
Okay, well, we're in the hustle and
bustle. People are getting their bets on
for race number three. We've had two
races. How are you looking after two
races here on the final day of Ascot?
Yeah, so
>> we're just thinking Royal Ascot's only
just started, and we need another 4 days
after this.
Um yeah, look at looking uh so far we've
had two races. Uh we've had two good
results. We're actually winning 68,000
after two races now, which we
desperately need. We need another naught
on the end of that.
>> Yeah, I was going to say it's a long way
to a million.
>> It is a long way, but you've got to
start somewhere as they say, and um but
just to look at the book now, um you you
can see here for the next next race.
This is this is how we get the tally up.
Um so, obviously the keyboard here um
all the buttons, it tells there's
letters, there's numbers, there's
prices. You can change all It It takes a
little bit of getting used to, but
that's the main one, the tally. If I
press that it tells us today
that's the stakes at the minute. That's
the payout, and that's the profit. We've
also taken 968 slips across three
pitches. So, we've got four computers
working here today. Um three pitches. I
can see obviously the book um for all
three pitches and all the bets that are
going in, and we can get an overall
picture to try and build books around
it. I mean, it's a bit of a ironic
statement building books around some of
the bets
>> we're taking this week, but that's the
idea. Okay, and in this next race you've
got two more or less short price
favorites at the top at the top of the
market. Do you try and take them both
on, or do you try and just take one of
them on?
>> I think the way they've been playing
this week, nobody wants to be with the
second favorite. So, they've you know,
at some meetings um that you could I
mean, last year we seemed to lay the
front three in every race, and you're
just looking for an outsider, and and we
Royal Ascot wasn't kind to us then, but
uh this race here, obviously we've got
Jolly Sailors 13 to 8 Santorini. I would
imagine the way they've been playing, uh
they would come for Jolie Star again.
I did have word in the week that that a
lot of people fancy this. Obviously,
it's the Australian horse,
and they think a lot of it. We'll soon
see. We've already got a 4 and 1/2
thousand pound loser here, which is a 28
to one shot. So, yeah, we've we've got
some bets to go. We've we've uh
Only 18 runners here. Everyone's queuing
up.
>> And one thing I've just noticed, the
prices change all the time without you
moving your fingers. Is that all done
automated? How do you How does it work?
So, some meetings like you
>> But, you can we enter all the prices as
we start, but there's a button you can
put it on an auto tracker. Okay. And you
can choose a margin to bet to, and
obviously it it mirrors the Betfair
Exchange or Matchbook Exchange, Betdaq.
Um it's just for a guide. When sometimes
you could be working on your own track,
you'll stick it on because then you
could be dealing with customers, and you
could get caught napping, not being able
to change the prices, paying someone
out, suddenly you've been bowled over.
>> Okay.
>> But, the idea is
uh obviously to just keep it ticking
over. That's why sometimes you have
people moaning, "We changed the prices."
We haven't. We've got it on auto set,
but then we would just turn it off,
adjust the prices to what we want. But,
it's just for ease because in these 31
handicaps, sometimes the each the big
price at the bottom, you quite easily
miss number 34 that's gone at silly
price, and you're you're on the board at
at the wrong price.
>> Okay.
>> All right. Well, we'll pop back and see
how things play out in race number
three.
>> Well, the runners and riders are loading
for the QEII, race number three. You
said
>> Quite a quiet betting heat this time.
>> very very quiet. I thought we'd we'd be
taking lumps out of Jolie Star, all the
rumors that they wanted to back it.
We've currently got it as a 240 pound
loser. I mean, this is like a book you'd
see at Cheltenham or Lingfield. This is
not a Royal Ascot race. Our biggest
loser is 3 and 1/2 grand. Our biggest
winner is probably about 6 and 1/2 7
thousand pound we've taken.
About 8 thousand on the race. It's just
very very quiet. Maybe they're licking
their wounds after the first two races.
But, I mean, they've they've had it good
all week.
>> Yeah, stop being selfish. What would you
have taken on the first two races
roughly?
>> Uh I can tell you we took 78,000.
>> Okay, so this is quiet.
>> Yeah.
Uh so, yeah, a very, very quiet race,
which as I said is strange considering
there's a two to one. There was a there
was an early move for Santa Rita Ryan
Moore back horse, but it's now eased
back out to 11 to four, but there's no
money. It's just moving um but for no
money here. So, very, very strange. But
look at them already in their positions
to get ready for the race. They've got
their seats early.
>> Um
I don't know what they're going to be
collecting cuz they haven't had a bet.
>> All right, let's see how we play out.
>> I imagine this is a stress-free watch
when it's a quiet book.
>> It is. It's quite disappointing to be
honest. You could have gone for a toilet
break. Um
I thought Santa Rita was a big runner.
So, to actually have a Ryan Moore horse
that we could cheer on, um they normally
they normally get beat, but no, these
are races we just have to wait 10 yards
from the line. There's a bunch of amount
of horses. You can't really see what's
going on.
>> Yeah.
>> Jollie star's there.
Who's this far side? It's going to be a
good finish.
It's the two favorites. Santa Rita is
head to head with the other favorite.
Who won Jollie star?
Oh.
>> That looks the far side.
>> Yeah, who was far side? It might have
been Lake Forest.
>> No, it's a Shadwell horse, is it?
>> This one?
>> Could be Could be
Could be Almarac. Could be Lake Forest.
>> in there.
>> It's blue.
It's blue, yeah.
I wanted I wanted near side. I wanted
Jollie star. I don't think we got up.
It's close, though. It's close. Cameras
have gone to Almarac, which would
currently be a
3,780 pound winner. Definitely far side.
Definitely far side.
>> That's Almarac.
>> Number one Almarac.
It's a winner. Another winner.
That's a great race. Another
>> Mark on William Haggas.
It's coming in late. The The The
original favorite was just about in
front about a furlong out. Just kept
finding more, and then just coming late
on was the Ryan Moore thing down the
middle, but far side
just looking to the keeper straight
line. You never know in these races.
Stewards after yesterday's debacle in
the last
>> Do you have to wait a certain amount of
time before you start paying out?
>> Well, there's only so long we can wait.
Yesterday, 20 minutes after the last
race, everyone's packing down and then
the bing bong went. That was another
saga, but I would say if there's any
doubt, here's the result.
>> [cheering]
>> Few excited customers here. Um yeah, I
just think if there's ever any doubt, we
just wish they'd just press the ding
dong button
because if there's any doubt, why why
cause us problems? It's It's It's a
nightmare we have to deal with. Again
yesterday, the problem we said that if
we do pay out customers
who backed the runner up and then the
original winner had to be thrown out,
how could those customers come back to
get their deficit from second because
we've got their slips? They paid out. We
can't tell a customer from one. And
that's the issues we then have, but
look, little little things like that
just need to be tidied up within the
betting industry.
>> All right. Three races down, three for
the bookies.
>> All right. StarSports currently 11-2 on
the jolly.
>> All right. Well, it's the big race today
and there's a big liability going on.
Talk to me. How we looking on this race?
>> Yes, so Sabre Strike, Tom Marquand,
William Haggas. He's already had a
winner today.
Um they're in good form. We've laid
35,000 at 7-4, 50,000 at 6-4, 8,000 at
13-8. Uh and the others are just all
brands and little pieces. So, currently
loses us 153,000 in the book. Um
everything else is in the 90s. There's a
couple in the hundreds, but we just want
Sabre Strike beat. We're not We can't
get anything else in the book at this
stage. There's a few minutes they're
circling at the post. Um we don't want
to see red. That's That's a bit helpful
here. All the rest are virtually blues
and purples. So, we we don't want to see
a a beam of red going past in front. At
this stage,
we are 72,000 in front. If this wins,
we'll be that behind.
>> All right. Well, we're cheering on for
the punters. Come on, Sabre Strike. Get
one home for the good guys.
All right, off and running. You can tell
it's a big liability cuz Khan's brought
himself to the stairs for a bit of a
better look here.
>> I think we're going to go back a bit
further cuz we can't even see it.
>> All right.
All right, off we go.
>> I don't know what makes me feel
differently. Just want to see
how quickly we're going to do it or not,
but it's in the middle at the minute.
Obviously, they've gone as two packs.
Sabre Strike is in the middle middle
middle section.
>> They go well in face.
>> Yeah, this is um
We're just looking on the outside.
That's one of the Is that one of the
Here she comes, man. Racing. He's down
the middle of the track. It's still two
furlongs to go.
It's they're wide across the track here.
>> Anyone's race.
>> And far side in the blues going very
well, whoever that is.
>> Sabre Strike's beat.
Bookie's in clover. That's the secret
adversary.
It's shame it happened at a big. Far
side 13. [screaming]
Sabre Strike, a big blow out here at
Royal Ascot.
A good result for you, fellas.
>> Very good result.
>> result.
>> We needed one. We finally got one. I
told you. Royal Ascot's just starting
and we're on the way back. We are so
back.
>> So, the placings are confirmed. How are
we looking? What's What's the damage for
the punters?
>> Uh well, secret adversary has won the
race on the on the race, I believe. A
very very good result for us. Not even
in the frame. Um just looking at the
places. Obviously, we laid each way for
some of the other horses. That factors
in. We've managed to cop 96,000 on the
race.
As I said, it's it's been a long week.
We've needed a few of these results.
You've got to start somewhere. And look,
this is the ups and downs of the game.
It's It's a good result for us. We're a
long way back, but you know, punters
have had it good all week. Um we're
we're looking for a few more results,
really. I I know there's not many short
ones left to run. There are four to one
the field here. Um Ben Hurren and Spy
Chief. So, fingers crossed we can we can
get a result in the next few as well.
>> So, after four races you're about 160 in
the green.
>> 169 to be precise in the green. Um
between the team they've done 1,640 bets
so far. It's absolutely boiling. You can
pick a winner, can't you, in the ring.
But it's a great atmosphere here today.
I mean, not just for once we're actually
getting a few results. But I mean, that
could that can soon change as well. But
just being around the hustle and bustle
of it, the £2, the fivers, it doesn't
matter what size bet.
Everyone's excited, aren't they, when
they get a winner?
>> Absolutely. All right. Well, the bookies
are happy, the punters are on the floor.
>> Five each way on nine. Five each way 15.
>> Five each way 15.
Two tickets, £20 in total, and we'll
give you a sweet and a card, mate. Best
of luck. Good luck, buddy.
What can I do you, buddy?
40 on
>> Hammer and a hammer.
>> Two pound Hammer and a hammer is
What number, buddy?
>> Uh 12.
>> £40 number 12, please.
All right, there you go, buddy. That's a
sweet and a card if you want to have a
bet.
>> Good, mate.
>> Thanks, buddy. Good luck, mate. Thank
you very much. Come on, buddy. What can
I do for you?
>> 11 each way. Which one's 11? Yeah, 11 is
right.
>> £5 on 11 each way, please. Five each way
11. Anything else, buds?
Hang on, you need a tenner back. That's
your five each way there.
And your tenner back.
>> 24 on the
So, five each way.
>> Five each way number 24?
>> Yes.
>> Five each way 24, please.
All right, buddy.
Yeah, you go for it. And there's a
little little card if you want to have a
bet online, mate. Thank you very much.
What can I do you?
>> You can see now on the board. We always
put them in twice.
>> Okay, yeah, sure.
>> So, you can shout here. We're five to
one the field because we are. There's
three horses at five to one. Take your
pick. Each of three five to one. Please
shout.
>> Come on, five to one the field. What do
you have? Back in the jolly? What can I
do for you?
>> Can I have
five each way on number three?
>> Five each way three. Of course you can,
sir.
Five each way the three. There's your
slip. And I'll give you a mint in case
you pull.
Good luck.
Okay. All right, we'll give you an
update. They've I took 50 grand each way
on number one Spy Chief. So, we need to
get a bit of money for the four and six
to even the book out. Spy Chief, 50
grand each way.
>> Five on 28.
>> Five each way 28, please.
Five each way 28 and a card if you want
to bet, buddy. Thank you very much. Good
luck. What can I do, buddy?
>> Yeah, I'll take 20 on 28.
>> Five each way 28, please.
All right, we're taking some bets here.
We got some cash. Taking some bets. 50
grand each way on number one.
Thankfully, I didn't take it out to
count it out. But, it's busy. It's busy.
All right. Well, as you heard earlier,
50 grand each way on a certain horse,
Carl.
I'm just going to ask you quickly, you
stand to lose 278 grand if this one
wins. At what point do you stop taking
money on it and shorten it?
We don't really. We just keep going.
It'd be lovely to lay out the same sort
of bets for four and six each way.
Imagine having all three of them in the
book. Oh, be dream. Ben would be
delighted, but but at the minute it
stands to lose us 278,000. If it's
placed, we lose 118,000. So, yeah,
anywhere out the frame. There's four
places. Is there four?
I don't know. Is it We just need it
anywhere near the back will do.
>> And it looks like if it doesn't win,
it's about a 50 grand winner for
everything else.
>> It is, yeah.
But, this game's never over. Look,
there's still probably 5 minutes by the
time they've loaded all 27 runners into
here.
And the money's still coming in. All
right, I'll let I'll let you get back to
it, buddy.
>> Quickest part.
>> Oh, yeah. The danger for you guys is on
the stand side.
>> Yeah, all blue cuz he's open and easy to
spot. And he's come up the same place as
the American horse won the last race
yesterday. So, it's very, very worrying
early. I've just been told this was
runner-up to the last winner at
Salisbury. He's in an absolute box
office position right now. If it If it
places, it's basically a bet to nothing
break level. But, we need it beat.
I'd rather have him gone down the middle
with 20 other horses, but he's on his
own with one other horse. Wait, he's not
on his own. He's one other horse that we
can see now.
It's a ballsy ride. It is a ballsy ride,
but
what we got? 27 runners here.
>> He's looking good now.
>> I mean, it's been great all week. The
stand side has been.
>> You're beat. You're beat. You're beat.
>> Wow.
Wow, THAT'S THAT IS THAT'S A BIG ONE.
>> [screaming]
>> WOW, THAT'S A BIG
HE'S NEARLY PULLED IT OFF.
DOUBLE RUSH IS GOING TO DO IT.
DOUBLE RUSH, SHANE FOLEY, Andrew
Balding.
Wins again. Double Very strange that,
wasn't it? Very strange. They one of the
money game for
beat two home, six furlong sprint and
they they really struggled. I don't
know.
Track this side's not what it was
yesterday. Very, very interesting for
for the last couple races to go. They
really should start employing me cuz as
soon as I've turned up you're in clover.
You're at all of them. You're at Windsor
Monday. We'll see you there. All right.
Hey, so Carl, how did how did you end up
winning on that race?
>> Uh we managed to cut We've laid a few
elsewhere, so I've just got to move the
tally down. We managed to win 101,585
on the end, but yeah, it's um in the in
the meantime I've also just trying to
put the result and we've laid a monster
bet in the last Illinois 100,000 at 7:4,
so So it's never over, is it?
>> All right. All right, well there's still
a lot of action to go. How were you up
overall today?
>> Uh
I day 274.
>> 274, all right. You're a quarter of the
way back. All right, buddy. We'll come
back and report in the next. It is the
penultimate race. You said it's quite
quiet so far, Carl.
>> Yeah, it is. Like we find after the big
race wherever we are. Um it's not as
much at Cheltenham, I think because
there's so many championship races and
and good races, sometimes the handicaps
they just filter off. Some people get
out to beat the rush, trains or
whatever, but some people just go ready
to go around the bandstand cuz you have
the sing song after the last. It's still
two more like this and one more after
this, but yeah, this one's always a bit
of a lull.
Um
I think it's generally the makeup of the
race half the time. If you had a
a five runner race with an even money
shot in here, probably be a bit
livelier, but we've got a how many
runners? 16 runners and two to one shot
Lost Boys in here. Um very, very quiet.
We've got two losers, the Lost Boys for
200 quid
and Prince Ling. We laid laid a little
bit each way here,
um which is 1,000 pound at 9:1, so
that's the real loser in the book, but
yeah, it's all leading up to the last
race where Illinois
is your big one. Okay. All right, let's
get this one out of the way and then
we'll look on to Illinois.
Well, there's a bit of a roar.
Great finish.
Favorite goes in.
Wathnan Star goes in and it wasn't
really a bad result.
Okay, so two one five goes in. You think
the bookies wouldn't be very happy, but
how did he finish up?
>> I'm actually quite happy cuz we only
lost 700 pound on the race. Just as I
said, after the big race we often get a
bit of a lull. Seems to be very quiet.
Um the Wathnan racing team had multiple
runners in there. I thought actually the
jolly was coming down the outside, but
he had sneaked up through the middle. Um
I think he just said he's completed a
four-timer as well, so great great
result for them. I'm good to see them on
the winner's podium, but yeah, good
result for us because that could have
been
one of those where they come in and and
and big bets to the off, but yeah, we
dodged that one I'd say, but it's one of
those the big one to go Illinois.
>> And how much did you take on Illinois?
>> Oh, we've taken 100,000 at 7:4 here.
It's already now when we come to
the race, so money's down.
>> All right, maybe back for more.
>> Okay. All right, let's see what happens
in the last.
>> All right, well, we are off and running
in the last. Do many people see this as
a get out of jail stakes?
>> Well, the business has been absolutely
monumental. We've laid 100,000 at 7:4
Illinois. Laid 100,000 each way at 4:1
La Destrier and now 20,000 each way at
5:1 A Piece of Heaven. We want the front
end beat. So, uh yeah, this is a a
lively last race.
The worst result is obviously La
Destrier, then Illinois. The rest will
be a nice get out in the last, but
kind of look what numbers and colors
we're looking for. A Piece of Heaven's
white. Illinois's in the the usual
purple. La Destrier's blue and yellow,
so
yeah, we're not looking at the yellow
and blue in the last, which is down the
middle at the minute.
>> All right, let's see what happens. It's
all to play for.
All right, well, we're turning for home
in the last. Illinois looks poised,
doesn't he?
>> Illinois looks very well positioned.
He's uh French Master's actually going
okay to be fair. Uh he's not come off
the bridle, but he's a long way back.
They've given easy lead to Ryan Moore
here.
Uh French Master's probably our only
hope down the wide outside. He's got
about six lengths to make up. Why they
give Ryan so much ground? But we've got
very, very slim chances. They've given
him first run. They've given him three
lengths. They are idling later on.
French Master's gaining very close.
French Master's coming down the outside
here.
IT'S GOING TO BE A SLOG, but he has got
the Prince Illinois.
SLOW MOTION FINISH.
>> [cheering]
[screaming]
>> WHAT THAT HORSE IS GOING TO GET UP. HE'S
GETTING THERE.
OH, IT'S CLOSE.
OH, IT'S CLOSE.
ILLINOIS IS UP.
French Master's traded a lot of zone.
Ryan Moore as usual has managed to get
him back up very, very
Great ride from obviously Ryan Moore.
Very, very disappointed in the
runner-up.
>> All right, let's go see how it looks in
the book.
>> All right, well originally this was
going to be a big, big loser. You had
some big bets come in. Did that help you
out here?
>> Massively. The fact that the Destrier
was out the frame. Obviously as I said
100,000 each way at the price which is 5
to 1. Uh it takes out a ridiculous
amount of money. I mean, the swing there
we've managed to win 73,000 on the race.
But the the the swing swing Sorry. It's
a It's a very good result in the end.
73,000 we've won on the race. Obviously
people looking at our books say it's a
40,000 loser, but that's the thing. You
have to then add into the place money
which is a 200,000 pound swing. We had
it originally as a 47,000 pound loser
Illinois.
Uh but obviously the place money gets
added in. So, yeah, it's Look, it's a
lot to understand and a lot to look at
and these sort of figures blow your mind
at times.
The swing there
was massive, massive.
Look, we can't complain. We've won
73,000 on the race, but
it was probably another
200 and something thousand.
>> So, what have you finished up overall
today?
>> Uh on the week on the day I believe
we're around 300,000 up or more. So,
yeah, it's it's been a It's been a great
day in the ring. Short heads have been
the story of our week this week. It's
Look, the crowds are still here. They're
buzzing. They're now off to the
bandstand to to have a sing-along. We're
still paying out. The queue will be very
long behind us, as you can see.
Favorite wins the last. They call it the
get out of jail safe, don't they? But,
we go again. It's been a great week.
It's very warm. Well, thanks so much for
letting us see behind the scenes of
being a bookmaker with StarSports on the
final day of Royal Ascot. You've been a
pleasure. Thank you so much, and thanks
for watching.
