00:14 Have you ever been nervous or felt fear when you’ve had to speak in public?

00:20 Maybe you’ve been on a stage in front of a room full of people,

00:23 or maybe you had a shared presentation in front of your coworkers.

00:27 Or maybe you’ve been in a room full of strangers and they made you stand up

00:31 and say who you are, where you’re from, and what you do.

00:35 Now, at some point, most people have felt what it feels like

00:38 to be afraid to speak in public.

00:41 For me, I grew up with a tremendous fear of public speaking.

00:45 and my earliest memory of having a fear to speak

00:49 happened in the second grade.

00:51 Our teacher was going around the room and calling on students to read.

00:54 Anybody been there?

00:56 I was thinking, “Please don’t call on me. Please don’t call on me.”

01:00 And she called someone else.

01:02 (Sigh) I can relax.

01:04 But as they would get to the end of what they were reading,

01:07 that anxiety would start to build again.

01:09 “Please don’t call on me. Please don’t call on me.”

01:12 And then it happened.

01:14 She called my name

01:16 and this wave of anxiety came over my body.

01:19 And as I started to read, I started fumbling over my words.

01:23 And the more I tried to get it together, the worse it got.

01:27 And I started hearing other kids laughing at me.

01:30 And by the time I finished, I was so embarrassed.

01:33 I remember thinking, “I never want to do that again.”

01:36 And it created this memory early on.

01:39 “You’re not a public speaker.

01:41 This isn’t for you. You just need to stay quiet.”

01:45 And I kept that memory for years to come.

01:48 Fast forward to my freshman year in college.

01:51 I had to take a speech class.

01:53 When I got up to give my speech,

01:55 that familiar wave of anxiety came over my body again.

01:59 My heart started beating out of my chest,

02:01 my adrenaline was racing, my throat got dry,

02:06 my my muscles started to tense up,

02:08 and when I was looking at my note card, my hands just started shaking.

02:12 And when I tried to speak, my voice started trembling.

02:16 And I felt this wave of heat come over my body,

02:19 and I felt like I was about to pass out.

02:22 And somehow I made it through the speech,

02:24 but that further anchored into my mind,

02:26 “You’re not a speaker. You just need to give this up.”

02:31 And I continued to believe that for years. Public speaking is not for me.

02:37 But over the years, I kept feeling this feeling inside

02:41 that I had a message to share,

02:43 that I needed to speak,

02:45 that I could make a bigger impact.

02:48 So that led me to the first key that helped me overcome

02:51 my fear of public speaking:

02:53 the realization that everyone has a message to share.

02:58 Each and every one of you has a message inside of you

03:01 that the world is waiting to hear.

03:04 And your message matters.

03:07 But maybe you’re like me.

03:09 For years, I didn’t think I had a message to share.

03:12 I wondered, “What could I share that would help someone else?”

03:16 Well, my friend and mentor, Rory Vaden, says it best.

03:20 He says, “You are perfectly positioned to serve the person you once were.”

03:26 Think about that.

03:27 There’s stuff you’ve been through in your life.

03:29 There’s lessons you’ve learned, obstacles you’ve overcome.

03:33 And there’s lessons you’ve learned along the way

03:35 that you can take and help other people.

03:38 Because right now, there’s someone going through

03:40 what you went through in the past,

03:42 and you can take those lessons you’ve learned

03:44 and help them overcome their challenges.

03:47 So I started going through my life, and I started thinking,

03:50 “Well, what have I been through,

03:52 and what lessons have I learned that I could use to help others?”

03:55 And I started sharing those, and I started helping people.

03:58 And that's why I'm here today, sharing this message,

04:01 because I overcame the fear of public speaking years ago,

04:04 and I wanted to share what helped me

04:06 so other people can share their message with the world.

04:09 So first, I realized I had a message to share.

04:13 Then I started asking myself, “Well, what goes through my head

04:17 that makes me so nervous before I get up to speak?”

04:20 And I would think thoughts like,

04:22 “They’re going to judge me.

04:24 What if they don’t like the way I look, or the way I’m dressed,

04:27 or what if they don’t like the sound of my voice,

04:30 or what if I mess up and I say the wrong thing?”

04:33 All those thoughts that were going through my head were about me.

04:36 Me, me, me.

04:38 And I realized I needed to shift that.

04:41 And that led me to the second realization

04:43 that helped me overcome my fear of public speaking:

04:46 realizing that sharing your message is not about you.

04:50 It’s about the people you’re there to serve

04:52 and what’s in it for them.

04:55 And my friend Rory Vaden says it best.

04:58 He told me, “Fear disappears when the mission to serve is clear.”

05:04 When you have the heart to serve people, you take the focus off of you,

05:07 and you start focusing on what’s the benefit that they’re going to get

05:11 by hearing my message.

05:13 And that changed everything for me.

05:15 When I took the focus off of me

05:16 and I started focusing on what are they going to get out of my message,

05:20 I realized if one person takes what I have to say

05:24 and applies it to their life,

05:25 it was worth it.

05:28 So key number one is you have a message to share.

05:31 Number two, your message is not about you.

05:34 It’s about the people you’re there to serve.

05:37 Now the next thing I started to do was I started to study,

05:40 “Well, what is fear?”

05:42 And fear is our body’s natural response to danger.

05:46 When our body feels danger, we go into the fight or flight response.

05:50 And we get ready to run or fight for our lives.

05:54 So I was studying, “What are the common causes of fear?”

05:58 And the most common physiological responses to fear

06:01 are increased heart rate, increased adrenaline,

06:04 shallow breathing, muscle tension, sweating,

06:07 dry mouth, and butterflies in the stomach.

06:10 I used to get most of those when I would get up to speak.

06:13 But I started to ask myself,

06:15 “What other times do I feel those feelings?”

06:19 Well, I feel those feelings when I get excited.

06:22 So I looked up, “What are the most common causes

06:25 or the common physiological responses to excitement?”

06:29 And they are increased heart rate, increased adrenaline,

06:32 shallow breathing, muscle tension, sweating, dry mouth,

06:36 and butterflies in the stomach.

06:38 Our bodies go through the exact same physiological response

06:42 in response to fear or excitement.

06:46 So the way to tell the difference,

06:47 if it’s fear, it’s associated with a threat or danger.

06:51 Or if it’s excitement, it’s positive anticipation.

06:56 So it all comes down to, “Am I in danger or am I looking forward to this?”

07:01 And that led me to the third key that helped me overcome my fear:

07:05 I could transform my fear into excitement.

07:10 When you get up and you start to share your message

07:12 and you feel those familiar feelings,

07:14 what I used to do was say, “Oh, there’s that fear again.

07:18 Remember when you used to speak before? That didn’t go so well.

07:22 They’re going to judge you. This isn’t for you.

07:24 Why do you think you should do this?”

07:26 And that fear would overtake me.

07:28 But now what I do, I shifted that and I created a new story.

07:32 So when I feel those feelings, I tell myself,

07:35 “You’re excited.

07:37 You’re about to go out there and transform someone’s life today.”

07:40 And now I really do get excited

07:42 because I know that if I go out

07:44 and if one person takes what I have to say and they apply it to their life,

07:48 I can make a positive impact.

07:51 So I want you to remember, when you get up and you start to feel those feelings,

07:55 you have the ability to transform that fear into excitement.

08:00 So if you’re still wondering,

08:02 “Why should I share my message?

08:06 What impact do I have to make?”

08:08 Well, I want to take you back to 2012.

08:11 At the time, I was giving the biggest talk that I’d given at that point.

08:15 There was an auditorium full of 200 people.

08:18 And I was ready.

08:20 I knew my message. My mission to serve was clear.

08:23 I transformed my fear into excitement and I went out there and I delivered.

08:28 And at the end of the talk, a man came up to me.

08:31 He said, “Dr. Justin, I want to thank you for sharing that message.”

08:35 He said, “I recently underwent quadruple bypass surgery.”

08:40 He said, “When I was laying in the hospital bed,

08:42 my family brought in my little grandson and they put my grandson on my lap.”

08:47 And he said, “I looked at my grandson and I made a promise right then and there

08:51 that I’m going to get my health back

08:53 because I’m going to be around to watch my grandson grow up.”

08:57 And he said, “What you just shared with me gave me exactly what I needed

09:00 to get my health back.”

09:03 And not only did he go on to get his health back,

09:05 at 65 years old, he completed the Ironman,

09:08 which is a grueling race,

09:10 which is a 2.4-mile swim,

09:12 a 112-mile bike ride,

09:15 and a complete marathon of 26.2 miles.

09:19 Not only has he done one Ironman, he’s gone on to do multiple Ironman races.

09:24 And the reason I’m telling you this

09:26 is because I never would have been able to make a difference in his life

09:30 if I wouldn’t have overcome my fear of public speaking,

09:33 If I hadn’t realized I had a message to share.

09:36 And if I didn’t get out and start sharing that message,

09:38 I never would have been able to help him.

09:41 But just like that man needed to hear my message in that moment,

09:45 there is someone that’s desperately waiting to hear your message.

09:49 There's a message inside of you that the world needs to hear.

09:53 So I want you to ask yourself,

09:56 “What impact can I make?

09:58 If I overcome my fear of public speaking

10:00 and I start sharing my message with the world,

10:03 what lives can I touch?

10:05 What legacy can I leave?

10:07 What positive impact can I make in the world?”

10:11 I want to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from B.J. Palmer.

10:14 He says, “You never know how far-reaching

10:17 something you may think, say, or do today

10:20 will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.”

10:24 If you would have told me years ago

10:26 that one day I was going to be standing on the TEDx stage

10:29 in its iconic red circle

10:32 sharing my message with the world,

10:34 I would have said, “There’s no way.”

10:36 But I’m here, I did it.

10:39 And if I can overcome my fear of public speaking,

10:41 so can you.

10:43 So my hope is that you’ll find your message,

10:46 you’ll transform your fear into excitement,

10:49 and you'll go out and you'll start sharing your message with the world,

10:52 and you’ll make a positive impact.

10:55 I’m Dr. Justin Moseley. Thank you.

10:58 (Applause and cheers)
