00:00 Have we ever seen someone in that sport

00:03 that possessed the arsenal that he has?

00:05 >> No. He's by far the most talented person

00:07 that we've had in mixed martial arts.

00:09 When he beat me, I was

00:10 >> That was the best you'd ever been.

00:11 >> I'd never been better.

00:12 >> Let's just say for the sake of argument,

00:14 you're three years apart. And now y'all

00:16 move up and y'all heavyweight.

00:18 >> Nah, he he wasn't beating me at heavy

00:20 all my life. Been grinding all my life.

00:22 Sacrifice, hustle, paid the price, want

00:25 a slice, got to roll the dice. That's

00:27 why all my life I've been grinding all

00:29 my life. All my life. Been grinding all

00:32 my life. Sacrifice hustle paid the

00:35 price. Want a slice. Got to roll a dice.

00:38 That's why all my life I've been

00:39 grinding all my life.

00:44 >> Hello. Welcome to another episode of

00:45 Club Shay. I am your host Shannon Sharp.

00:48 I'm also the propri of Club Shay.

00:50 Stopping by for conversation and a drink

00:51 today is one of the most accomplished

00:53 and decorated fighters in MMA history.

00:56 He's one of the great mixed martial

00:57 artists of all times. A warrior in the

00:59 octagon, a champion in every MMA

01:02 organization he's competed in, a former

01:04 UFC light heavyweight champion and

01:06 heavyweight champion. He's the second

01:08 fighter in UFC history to hold titles in

01:10 two weight classes simultaneously. He's

01:13 the first fighter to in the UFC to win

01:15 and defend both the light heavyweight

01:17 and the heavyweight belts. A UFC Hall of

01:20 Famer, a two-time Olympian, three-time

01:21 Louisiana State Champion, an

01:23 all-American freestyle wrestler, color

01:25 commentator, worldclass talent, a master

01:27 on the microphone, a father, a husband,

01:29 a legend. DC could stand for double

01:32 champion, but in this case, it stands

01:33 for Daniel Cormier,

01:34 >> my man. Hey, say it again. When you say

01:38 it all, when you say it all, when you

01:40 say it all, man, I'm going to tell you,

01:42 when you say it all, it's something cuz

01:45 I grew up in Louisiana. I never could

01:47 have imagined this life. I swear to God,

01:49 I never could have imagined. And to hear

01:51 all that, man, that was uh that was a

01:53 ride,

01:53 >> man. Thanks for stopping by Club Shay

01:55 Shay.

01:55 >> Thank you,

01:56 >> man. You know, when you stop by Club

01:56 Shay, you know you got to have a taste

01:58 of the

01:59 >> Yeah. Yeah. That shave by the pool.

02:00 >> Yeah, man. Awardw winning.

02:03 >> Awardw winning.

02:04 >> It's good.

02:04 >> It's great. You know anything about

02:06 Kanye?

02:07 >> No, I don't. But let me I'm going to try

02:08 that.

02:10 >> Oh, it smells strong, too.

02:14 See?

02:14 >> Swish it around. Don't

02:20 Well, that's pretty good. It don't even

02:21 really It don't

02:22 >> Yeah. See, they got that bite. You got

02:24 that bite. I was expecting a little bit.

02:25 So, my daddy drink like Southern Comfort

02:27 and stuff like that. Set your hair on

02:29 fire.

02:29 >> Yeah. No, no, no, no, no. It's nice and

02:31 smooth. Yeah. It's easy.

02:33 >> See, we got to get you some. We got to

02:35 get some for your old man.

02:36 >> That's actually really good.

02:37 >> Yeah. See,

02:38 >> that's real good. Let me ask you when

02:40 you hear what I read off and you and I

02:44 were talking before we started this

02:45 interview and you was talking about

02:46 growing up in Louisiana and the

02:48 expectations of and now you're in media.

02:51 >> Did you expect any of this to happen?

02:53 This be your life at your age now?

02:55 >> No, Shannon, I was I was a kid that I

02:58 didn't do I grew up in in Lafayette,

03:00 right? So, it's not the best place,

03:01 right?

03:02 >> But I followed everybody. So, I did

03:04 everything they did. So whenever when I

03:06 was in high school, my freshman year, I

03:08 was a kid that failed off the wrestling

03:09 team, right?

03:10 >> I was a kid that had to go to summer

03:11 school to get to 10th grade, I did all

03:14 kinds of bad stuff until I started

03:16 getting better at wrestling, right?

03:17 >> And then I realized like, wait, this

03:18 wrestling can take me somewhere,

03:19 >> right?

03:20 >> But even after that, I never thought

03:22 that

03:22 >> I would have jobs doing what I do with

03:25 the volume, uh, working at ESPN, working

03:27 at Fox that I used to.

03:29 >> A lot of similarities, right? But like

03:31 having those opportunities, I never

03:33 could have imagined doing that because

03:35 >> I didn't even go I didn't go to college

03:37 for media. None of us did. We went to

03:39 college to play sports.

03:40 >> And normally the best people that are in

03:42 media didn't go to college for media,

03:44 especially when they do what we do. Now,

03:46 obviously, you know, the the playbyplay

03:48 and and things of that, you know,

03:50 obviously, but

03:51 >> to sit and talk about a sport,

03:53 >> it it really helps if you play that

03:55 sport and you can speak through personal

03:57 experience.

03:57 >> Absolutely. And that's what people want

03:58 to hear. The people actually want to

04:00 hear when you are talking as the guy

04:02 that played

04:04 >> the tight end, the guy that's in the Pro

04:05 Football Hall of Fame. When you're

04:07 talking about football

04:08 >> because they know, well, he been in the

04:09 trenches and that's what I do when it

04:11 comes to fighting. I can explain

04:13 something in real fine detail.

04:16 >> Yes.

04:16 >> Because

04:17 >> there's no position I haven't

04:18 experienced,

04:20 >> the good and the bad in my career.

04:23 >> I'm going to take it from this approach.

04:25 You you got a late start to the to to

04:27 MMA.

04:28 >> Yep. and getting a late start that

04:31 didn't deter you because now I'm looking

04:34 at you what you were able to accomplish

04:36 later in your career. How I mean is how

04:40 is that possible DC?

04:41 >> So I walked into that gym at 30 and a

04:44 half, right?

04:44 >> I turned 31 in March. I I only fought

04:46 for 10 years and at 41 I should have

04:49 been done but the money had got too

04:50 good. That's the way you know the money

04:52 get good at the end. The money get good

04:54 at the end whenever you aren't supposed

04:56 to be doing it anymore. But I I I kept

04:58 fighting. But I walked into that gym,

05:00 but because of my background in

05:02 wrestling, it gave me like a massive

05:03 head start. So I d I went out to San

05:05 Jose. I I went to multiple gyms

05:08 recruiting.

05:10 >> They were trying to get me to train, but

05:11 I walked into AKA, bro. I saw Kane

05:13 Velasquez. I was like, "Yo, that dude is

05:16 who I want to fight like. And if I can

05:18 train alongside him,

05:19 >> right,

05:19 >> it will lead me to being one of the

05:20 best." But at 31 years old, I was

05:23 essentially making my uh MMA debut

05:25 >> because normally guys that are really

05:27 really good, they start obviously you

05:30 got a wrestling background, but they've

05:31 been doing this for an extremely long

05:33 period of te of time and you just

05:35 basically I mean 30 years old with a

05:37 wrestling background, but you got to be

05:39 multifaceted to be really good in the

05:40 UFC. The more rounded you are, the

05:43 better you are. If you're

05:44 one-dimensional, you're not going to

05:45 have a you're going to have a very short

05:46 shelf life in that sport.

05:48 >> Yep. Not today. You can't you you you

05:50 definitely cannot be onedimensional

05:52 today. Right.

05:52 >> Back in the day, you remember Royce

05:53 Grace and those guys? I do. They would

05:55 walk with the the jiu-jitsu chain. You

05:56 had the jiu-jitsu guy. You had the big

05:58 boxer. One brother went out there with

06:00 one glove on. His name was R. Jimmerson.

06:02 He went out there with one glove.

06:04 >> Can't do that.

06:05 >> The first two fights that were in

06:06 Denver, Colorado, I saw him UFC.

06:07 >> Really?

06:08 >> Yeah.

06:08 >> You went?

06:09 >> I went.

06:09 >> See, that's crazy.

06:11 >> I was telling Dana the story.

06:12 >> You actually went to watch it?

06:13 >> I went to watch it cuz I I I'm, you

06:15 know, just like Okay. And you know,

06:17 listening to it, what is it going to be?

06:18 Well, we going to see if a karate guy

06:20 could beat a this guy and if a big guy

06:22 could beat that guy. And I'm like,

06:24 "Okay, so what about the classic?" They

06:25 like, "Ain't no weight class." I like,

06:26 "Hold on. So a guy 125 could literally

06:28 be fighting somebody 275." Like, "Yeah."

06:31 I like, "Uh, I don't think this going to

06:32 end well."

06:33 >> But that's what drew you in, right? And

06:34 then Royce wins and he's 165.

06:37 >> Yes. I'm looking at this little dude. I

06:38 said, "You about to get the brace beat

06:40 off you." And he got his he got his he

06:42 got his suit on and Yeah. And I'm like,

06:45 "What's he doing?" He's like literally

06:47 trying to lay down. I'm like, I don't

06:48 think this cuz I because I ain't never

06:50 about no

06:52 TC. I don't know about no Brazilian

06:53 jitsu. And he's like laying down. I'm

06:55 like, what you doing?

06:57 >> You go down there, you trouble.

06:58 >> Yeah, exactly.

06:59 >> If you go down there with him, they were

07:00 in trouble. But

07:02 >> I I had So, girl, so that my manager

07:05 Yeah.

07:05 >> still to this day, Dwayne, he calls me

07:08 when I graduate college at Oklahoma

07:09 State. He goes, "Hey, there's a sport."

07:11 This is 2001. He goes, "There's a sport

07:13 that's going to take over. It's going to

07:14 be MMA. It's fighting. Have you ever

07:17 been in a fight like in your life?

07:19 >> Right.

07:20 >> I started laughing at him. I said, "Bro,

07:22 I grew up in Louisiana. I had to fight

07:24 all the time." Right.

07:25 >> And I think that

07:27 >> that even though even though Shan like

07:28 we don't

07:29 >> I'm pretty sure you grew up down in the

07:31 South K and you had to fight at times

07:33 even though we aren't doing it

07:34 correctly. Somebody's trying to punch

07:36 you. You're trying to punch someone. So

07:38 then it when somebody taught me to punch

07:40 like, "Okay, this is how it's done the

07:41 right way." Correct. So, it allowed for

07:43 me to uh adjust to it much faster. I

07:47 wasn't scared, right?

07:48 >> Like that's the biggest thing with

07:49 wrestlers, especially being scared to

07:51 get hit. You cannot be scared,

07:53 >> right?

07:54 >> How is it that we're starting to see

07:56 more athletes DC dominate in their 40s,

07:59 you saw a guy like yourself, you see a

08:01 LeBron James, you saw a Tom Brady, you

08:03 see guys that are playing at extreme cuz

08:05 normally guys, they're gone. By the time

08:07 they get to the mid30s, they're gone.

08:09 Especially in your sport, even in

08:11 football, guys ain't playing that long.

08:13 And every once in a while, you'll get a

08:14 Kareem Abdul Jabbar that'll be, but he's

08:16 a big guy and he doesn't need to get up

08:18 and down the court.

08:19 >> Yep.

08:20 >> But to see Tom play until he's what, 43,

08:22 44 years of age. Yourself fighting

08:24 >> at 41. Yeah.

08:26 >> That's a whole LeBron still being able

08:27 to be play at the level he's playing at.

08:30 Why do you think guys have been able to

08:31 to to do things to this level for much

08:35 longer?

08:36 >> Because of the access to to recovery. I

08:38 think athletes are smarter today. Those

08:40 guys are are very young. So when we're

08:43 younger, like you're in your 20s, you're

08:44 in your 30s, you're Superman. Yeah. You

08:46 go to sleep, you jump out of bed, you go

08:48 to train. Yes.

08:49 >> Every day. But then as you start to get

08:50 older, the body starts to ache a little

08:52 more. But those guys in their 20s and

08:54 30s are not

08:55 >> they're not rejecting the body anymore.

08:57 They're saying at 25, while I may feel

09:00 great, I know there are like problems

09:01 underlying for me that I need to address

09:04 address make sure that I'm straight. And

09:06 I think that's why they're playing so

09:07 long, but they're playing at an elite

09:09 level. I remember when Pton Manning went

09:10 to Denver.

09:11 >> He said it himself. He goes, "I can't

09:13 throw the ball down the field." He goes,

09:15 "But I will manage a game. Every now and

09:16 again, I'll give you one that goes a

09:18 little deeper." He goes, "But I'm

09:19 managing the game." Because at the point

09:22 we were still kind of living in that

09:23 that world where you just age and then

09:26 you age out. And even Aaron Rogers right

09:28 now, right? We'll see what happens this

09:30 year. But last year, he just didn't look

09:32 like the same guy and caught up to him

09:34 quick,

09:34 >> right?

09:36 going into a fight because like you

09:38 said, when you're young, you feel

09:39 invincible. You feel you can't lose. As

09:42 you start to get age, you're like, I'm

09:44 not as quick as I once was. My reaction

09:46 time is not the same. My my my defense

09:49 mechanisms are not the same. My spidey

09:51 senses don't tingle like they once did.

09:54 I'm not processing information. You know

09:56 what I'm saying? The computer

09:58 >> the internet ain't working.

09:59 >> The internet you you back on a

10:02 >> dial up. You don't

10:03 [Laughter]

10:06 >> you're exactly right. But DC, I mean for

10:08 you I mean you went in there and you did

10:09 what you did to CP like what's what is

10:12 your what was your thought process? Did

10:14 you like man I'm getting older. Did you

10:16 do any did you train any different?

10:17 >> So at 39 I didn't so I I didn't at 39.

10:20 This is the craziest [ __ ] ever. So 39

10:22 starts.

10:23 >> Yes.

10:23 >> Right. In 2017

10:26 I lost to Jon Jones in Anaheim.

10:28 >> Right. So, I was they called me, "Hey,

10:30 you want to fight another fight?" It was

10:32 like September, uh, October. I said,

10:35 "No." I said, "Um, this was the first

10:37 time I'd been knocked out in my life."

10:39 Like, in my life, Shannon, like

10:41 >> in football, I would hit people and you

10:43 kind of buzz.

10:45 >> I was knocked out,

10:46 >> bell rung, and all it was was my bell

10:48 just got rung, right? You go back to

10:50 playing.

10:50 >> I got knocked out, man. like he kicked

10:52 me in the head and he hit me with a

10:54 bunch of follow-up shots and it put me

10:56 out like hey

10:57 >> I remember I can tell you right now this

10:59 was in 2017

11:03 >> from the the moment I that fight

11:04 finished all the way back to the

11:07 ambulance I still can't recall that time

11:10 >> really

11:10 >> I can't make myself remember what

11:13 happened I try I try now even at night

11:15 to go man what happened in that 10 15

11:17 minutes

11:18 >> dude there's a video of me crying with

11:20 Joe Rogan He's interviewing me after the

11:22 fight, but I'm so concussed that I'm

11:24 crying in the lockdown because I just

11:25 lost the biggest fight of my career,

11:26 right?

11:26 >> They called me to fight again. And I

11:28 said, "No." I said, "I'm gonna let my

11:29 brain rest until the end of next year

11:32 >> or the beginning of next year. I fight

11:33 in January. At 39, I feel great. I go

11:36 into I I I win the belt back. I beat

11:39 Stipe in July and I'm fine. I feel no

11:42 age because of the late start, right?

11:44 I'm only doing this seven years now,

11:46 right? Eight years. Because of the late

11:48 start at 39, I become the double champ.

11:50 I defend the belt in Madison Square

11:51 Garden. Everything is great. But on that

11:54 morning of that fight with Derrick

11:55 Lewis, I get up to do my shakeout. I go

11:58 run, hit my pads. As I'm on the

12:00 treadmill, I'm like, "God, I'm like, I

12:02 don't feel great this morning. Like, I'm

12:04 kind of like achy, right, Shannon? I'm

12:06 running. I sneeze. Bro, when I sneeze,

12:09 threw my back out. What? Threw my back

12:12 out. I sneezed so violently."

12:13 >> That's like a baseball player doing a

12:14 mess like that.

12:15 >> Yes. I sneeze so violently. My back went

12:18 out. So now I'm stuck hunched over. Mind

12:20 you, at 01:00 a.m. tonight, I've got to

12:23 walk to that octagon and fight Derrick

12:25 Lewis. You can't lose a main event on

12:26 the day. So then they come and they they

12:28 massage me. They give me a stem cell

12:30 treatment. They get me up in about

12:32 around 05:00 in the afternoon. I go

12:33 fight. One month after that, I'm in the

12:36 gym training. I kick Kane's leg. He

12:38 checks it. Tingle goes all the way up my

12:40 leg.

12:41 >> The the the the the disc sits on my

12:44 sciatica. Now I'm paralyzed almost. And

12:47 from that moment on, I just was not the

12:48 same guy. It took one incident, a

12:51 sneeze, essentially ended my career

12:54 because I never want to fight again,

12:55 right? Stipe beat me the next time, then

12:56 he beat me the following time. It's like

12:58 I never It was that one thing. So, I

13:01 think these guys while they're playing

13:02 longer have an ability to go longer, but

13:04 it'll be one thing. LeBron,

13:06 >> yes. If LeBron gets hurt,

13:08 >> it's not going to be like when he got

13:09 hurt in his 20s. He's really going to

13:10 struggle to bounce back

13:12 >> because when you're younger, the ability

13:14 to bounce back, I mean, an injury that

13:16 would keep you down a day, all of a

13:18 sudden it's two, three days or maybe

13:19 it's a week. And a injury that would

13:21 keep you down a week when you're younger

13:23 is keeping you down two weeks or maybe

13:24 even a month. The body just doesn't

13:26 recover

13:27 >> with the football like when you how old

13:29 were you when you retired?

13:30 >> I was uh I was I was going to turn 36 in

13:33 2 months.

13:33 >> So, you were still relatively young. In

13:35 today's game though, you'd have played

13:36 three more years.

13:37 >> Yes.

13:38 >> Right. But how did the how did

13:40 >> Because because they don't in training

13:42 camp, we had, you know, we was outside

13:44 twice a day. We hitting we have some

13:46 days we have two a day practices.

13:47 >> They don't even hit no more.

13:48 >> No, no, no, no. They don't they don't

13:50 hit no more. We we we hit. We They were

13:52 for real real here. And we hit for real

13:54 real in college and we hit for real real

13:56 in high school. So,

13:58 >> but I think it got our bodies used to

14:00 taking that. We didn't have these little

14:01 ticky tack injuries that these guys get

14:03 now.

14:04 >> But

14:05 >> do you think that because you didn't

14:07 have the wear and tear?

14:08 >> Mhm.

14:09 >> That you know, say if you had gotten to

14:11 this like in your 20 like I think Jon

14:12 Jones started like 20.

14:14 >> John Jones was Jon Jones started at like

14:15 19.

14:16 >> Yeah. Do you think because you didn't

14:18 have the wear and tear because like you

14:20 said even though you got I mean you had

14:22 a short chef life. Really? You only had

14:23 like eight years?

14:24 >> Yeah. Yeah. I fought for eight years,

14:25 right? I was the champ. I was in the

14:27 championship for eight years. I fought

14:29 for the belt those last two years. That

14:31 didn't mean I was necessarily in the

14:33 picture, right? I was fighting for the

14:35 belt because I have the name value. I

14:36 was fighting for the belt in Anaheim

14:38 because I was the champion, right? I had

14:39 to defend. Sure, I was beating Stipe,

14:41 but man, by that

14:43 >> that old monkey jump on my back in the

14:45 third round. Sh. I was beating the [ __ ]

14:46 out of him. By the third round, the

14:48 monkey jump on my back. I was like, "Yo,

14:49 I am exhausted. I'd never felt it

14:51 before."

14:52 >> Wow. Yeah. It was crazy. It was It is

14:54 the scariest thing that you could ever

14:56 imagine in your life. I've been in some

14:59 some hairy situations

15:01 inside that octagon

15:04 not having the energy to fight

15:08 >> cuz that dude wants to kill you.

15:09 >> Yes.

15:10 >> If that like if that referee don't take

15:12 him off of you, he going to keep beating

15:14 you up.

15:15 >> Like seriously, like that's how you got

15:17 to approach fighting,

15:18 >> right?

15:18 >> So it's like it that's a scary when

15:20 you're like you get off that stool and

15:22 you're like, "Oh my god, I don't know

15:23 how if I got 10 more minutes and scary."

15:25 I forget who it was, but I remember

15:27 there was some lady that she like woke

15:30 she's like I was in the ring and I

15:32 realized I didn't want to fight anymore.

15:35 >> I was like you probably want like in

15:37 training or or maybe even the night

15:40 before

15:40 >> in the back.

15:41 >> Yes. But you don't in the ring and she I

15:44 forget her name. Um

15:45 >> she fought.

15:46 >> Yes.

15:46 >> She got knocked out, didn't she?

15:47 >> She lost.

15:49 >> She lost.

15:49 >> She lost.

15:50 >> She lost. Uh Misha Misha Tate.

15:52 >> Misha Tate. Yep. Misha Tate. Yep. I

15:54 remember her saying that

15:55 >> and I was like,

15:56 >> "Boy, that's an awful time to find out

15:58 you don't want to do something when

16:00 you're actually doing it."

16:01 >> Yeah. There's some questions before.

16:03 Yeah. Every time.

16:04 >> Oh, yeah. For sure.

16:05 >> Every time you There's some questions. I

16:07 used to watch I used to watch Floyd and

16:09 >> all them dudes like in the ring before

16:10 when they're introducing them like, "How

16:12 do they do that? How do they find calm

16:15 >> in this with everything going on around

16:17 him

16:18 >> with what's at stake?"

16:20 >> Yeah.

16:20 >> And I was like, man, I I couldn't do it.

16:23 But then I I would I would walk to that

16:25 octagon.

16:26 It's the mo like you know like you know

16:28 right and that's why people that's what

16:30 people don't understand when you hit

16:32 that tunnel for a Super Bowl or you hit

16:34 that tunnel for a big game your whole

16:36 body's on fire.

16:37 >> Oh yeah. Yeah. You you you got

16:38 goosebumps.

16:39 >> You got goosebumps everywhere.

16:40 >> What's going through your mind

16:42 >> Shannon? I'm in the back every time and

16:46 I would go in same routine. I'm from

16:48 Louisiana superstitious. I go in the

16:50 back and I go to sleep. People would

16:52 look at me like, "How can you sleep

16:54 knowing that in three hours you're going

16:56 to go fight for a world championship?"

16:57 >> Right?

16:58 >> But I knew that my preparation I left I

17:00 left no stalling turn. I done

17:02 everything. So the result was done,

17:04 right?

17:04 >> Either I was going to win or I was going

17:06 to lose because

17:07 >> it wasn't going to be something that you

17:08 did in that room. And in that 3 hours,

17:11 >> how do you settle yourself? I said,

17:12 "Because I'm ready." But they would I

17:15 would be in the back. I'd get up. I do

17:16 my warm-up. Then they would tell me,

17:18 "All right, DC, you walk in a minute."

17:20 He start hearing music and all right DC

17:23 we're walking in 5 4 3 2 1 and it's just

17:25 nerves I'm like how many times should I

17:27 have gone left I went to college Shannon

17:29 how did I end up here fighting

17:32 >> man I hit that curtain thousands of

17:34 people 18,000 the UFC does an amazing

17:37 job of walking you through the crowd

17:40 >> and the energy is just electric and

17:42 they're reaching for you and they're

17:44 they want a piece of you right

17:45 >> and and I couldn't I couldn't even

17:46 handle it I would run to the octagon

17:48 because it's just too much. I'm already

17:51 jazzed. I can't take in any more energy

17:53 before I step in there.

17:55 >> Do you see them? Cuz a lot of times like

17:57 you get you get into a zone DC and you

17:59 know, like you said, like you don't even

18:01 you don't even see the people. It's like

18:02 a calm. Like I'm in a game and it's like

18:04 a calm. I don't even hear the crowd.

18:06 >> Yeah.

18:07 >> It's like everything is just like hush

18:08 and all of a sudden you catch a pass,

18:10 you catch a touchdown and it's ah yes,

18:13 >> it's great. But I could like I can't see

18:15 him because I'm I'm focused

18:17 >> purposely tunneling on the octagon and

18:20 have the ability to go second. So the

18:22 guy that I'm fighting is already in

18:24 there. Right.

18:24 >> Right. So I'm not standing there waiting

18:26 trying to So I'm I'm going second. When

18:28 I hit that when I hit that that freaking

18:30 uh when I hit that um that step, those

18:33 steps,

18:34 >> I'd walk up and I tap the tab the

18:36 octagon. That was some football [ __ ] we

18:38 used to do. Always hit play like a champ

18:39 today, right? Like I always tap the

18:41 octagon. I go in there,

18:43 >> bro. There's Bruce. Bruce is dressed to

18:45 the dime.

18:46 >> There's some commissioners making sure

18:47 we don't fight before. And then when

18:48 they do the last instructions and you

18:50 turn around,

18:51 >> there's a pen that they dropped to lock

18:53 the cage. It It makes that sound right

18:55 there that he just dropped,

18:56 >> right?

18:56 >> I could hear it. 20,000 in the arena.

18:58 >> And you could still hear that pen.

18:59 >> I could hear that pen. And then I would

19:01 say to myself, I swear to God, I would

19:03 be like, "Somebody got to die in this.

19:05 It ain't going to be me." Swear to God.

19:07 Every time I be like, "Somebody going to

19:08 die in here." Like

19:10 >> I'm about to make you go make you go

19:11 unlock that gate.

19:12 Yes, my goal is to make you unlock.

19:14 >> You either jump over this, you either

19:16 jump over to run away from me or they

19:18 going to pull me off of you by the time

19:20 this is done, right?

19:20 >> And then that was always my approach

19:22 because you had to look at it like life

19:24 and death.

19:25 >> You just had to. I had so many things. I

19:27 wouldn't eat. I would like abstain from

19:30 sex. I wanted to be as primal as I could

19:33 be going into the octagon.

19:35 >> When you cut Okay, you're the light

19:36 heavy that weight is 205. So now, so

19:39 what are you coming down from? You

19:40 coming from 230? You coming from 235?

19:42 You coming from 250? Where you coming

19:44 from? Deep

19:44 >> Shannon,

19:46 my nutritionist was at my house for a

19:48 fight I was supposed to have in January,

19:50 but I got hurt the day before

19:52 Thanksgiving. He had a turkey brine. A

19:54 turkey and a brine. It was in a big old

19:56 pale.

19:57 >> Yeah,

19:57 >> it was white though. Shannon, he was

19:59 going to make us Thanksgiving dinner,

20:00 but it was not going to be seasoned.

20:02 >> I got hurt right before Thanksgiving,

20:04 man. We took that turkey, rinsed all

20:05 that [ __ ] off, made it ourself, and

20:07 seasoned it. The next day, I weighed 257

20:10 lbs. What?

20:11 >> I weigh I weighed 257, bro.

20:13 >> And you got to be 205 in January.

20:15 >> January 19th, I weighed in at 204.7.

20:19 >> I was 257.

20:21 >> What the heck?

20:22 >> I was huge. I was big, but like I wasn't

20:25 tall.

20:25 >> Yeah, I know. That's a lot of weight in

20:27 in a small area, DC.

20:28 >> But but when I would walk into the

20:30 octagon, you could see where the power

20:32 was in my ass and my legs.

20:34 >> It was like that all this.

20:36 >> You're really explosive.

20:37 >> Exactly. And it was all in this. Right.

20:40 While I was the shorter guy, short arms.

20:42 Yeah.

20:42 >> I had my torso is not tall, right?

20:45 >> But like it's in my legs and that's why

20:47 the explosiveness was always so on on

20:49 display. Yeah. It was good. But it was

20:51 the He has the best.

20:52 >> It's like walk dude when you're on when

20:54 you're on that sideline in the national

20:56 anthem playing that feeling. Yes.

20:58 >> That's what we're feeling, bro. It's the

20:59 best. It's it lit. I've

21:01 >> That's why so many fighters end up on

21:03 drugs and messed up because you can't

21:05 replace

21:06 >> You can't You can't replicate that.

21:07 >> No, you can't. And that's why athletes

21:09 struggle once they leave their said

21:10 sport is because you're never going to

21:12 be able to replicate 20,000, 80,000,

21:15 however many thousand. You're never

21:16 going to be able to replicate the locker

21:18 room. You're never going to be able to

21:20 replicate the bus rides, the plane

21:21 rides, just the camaraderie. Now, I

21:23 don't know.

21:23 >> But that's what you missed the most.

21:25 >> That's what you literally missed the

21:26 practices and afterwards just sitting

21:28 there talking.

21:28 >> Yeah. Yeah. I didn't miss the games. I

21:30 mean, the money was nice, but you just

21:31 missed the camaraderie, the laughing and

21:33 joking. You in the line stretching and

21:34 doing all those things. Yep.

21:36 >> You mentioned Anaheim. Y

21:37 >> you fought Jon Jones. I think you were

21:39 35 and he was 27.

21:41 >> Yep. Yep.

21:42 >> If you guys were comparable ages, is

21:44 that fight different?

21:45 >> I think I think there are a lot of I

21:49 think there are a lot of reasons why he

21:50 beat me. He's I mean, have you met Jon

21:54 Jones?

21:54 >> I haven't.

21:55 >> Jon Jones is probably 65 6'4 65.

22:00 Jon Jones's arms are 84 in apart. His

22:03 reach. Wow. Mine are 72. Yeah. So like

22:07 he was taller like a so even if even at

22:10 the same age he would still be taller.

22:12 >> Yes.

22:13 >> Um two of his brothers played in the

22:14 NFL. One was like really good Chandler.

22:16 >> Chandler.

22:17 >> Um

22:19 so I think I would be better because I

22:24 would be younger. But I don't know if I

22:26 could have been better in Anaheim

22:27 because I trained so hard because he

22:29 beat me the first time.

22:30 >> I've never been better. I when he beat

22:32 me I was better.

22:33 >> That was the best you'd ever been.

22:34 >> I'd never been better. I would have beat

22:36 everybody else in the world in and in

22:38 all those weight classes. I was never

22:40 better than that night and he beat me.

22:43 And even the fight up to the point that

22:44 he got me, it was just super

22:46 competitive,

22:47 >> right?

22:47 >> Joe Rogan said something to the effect

22:49 of, "You can clearly see you're watching

22:50 the two best lightweights we've ever

22:52 seen in an octagon, right?

22:53 >> Because we were both so locked in." So,

22:55 I don't know that the age made as much

22:57 of a difference because I just think

22:59 that he has a lot of built-in advantages

23:02 with his height and his reach and he's

23:04 got great timing and he's tough, dude.

23:06 >> He's very tough, Shannon. Like, I would

23:08 club him upside the head and he would

23:10 just keep fighting.

23:11 >> He would just and not many did that.

23:12 >> And that's what I want. What makes him

23:14 because like you say, okay, he's he's

23:16 6'4 and a half. He's 6'5, 84 in reach.

23:20 Um, he can punch you. He can take you

23:23 down. See, he don't hit very hard

23:25 though, but his hands,

23:26 >> he does not punch hard.

23:28 >> Really?

23:28 >> No, he does not punch hard. He He So, we

23:31 were I went into the fight. I talked to

23:33 Rashad Evans, right? And Rashad goes,

23:34 "He doesn't hit hard, but he has other

23:36 weapons." So, we first start fighting

23:37 the first time. We trade jabs because I

23:40 had a real unique ability because of my

23:42 athleticism to get to the jab even

23:44 though the guy was taller. So, we jab

23:46 each other

23:47 >> and my nose started bleeding. I was

23:48 like, "Well, why my nose bleeding? He

23:51 hit hard. My [ __ ] bleeding. His [ __ ]

23:52 bleeding for different reasons. But um

23:55 uh

23:56 >> Oh, there you go.

23:59 >> Ignore that.

24:01 [Applause]

24:02 >> You got you got to think that with

24:04 anything.

24:05 >> So my [ __ ] bleeding, right? And I'm

24:06 like, "Why is my nose bleeding?" I was

24:08 like, "Why my [ __ ] bleeding?" So anyhow,

24:10 he uh we start fighting and I'm like,

24:13 "Okay, but I got to pressure him because

24:15 I'm shorter,

24:16 >> right?"

24:16 >> Yo, you got to walk through some razors

24:18 to get to him.

24:19 >> He's got knees. Yes. That you. So, by

24:23 the time I get in,

24:24 >> I've been kneading the body three times.

24:26 I've been elbowed two times. So, now I

24:28 get off. I get my [ __ ] going. And then

24:31 >> we get apart. So, now I got to go all

24:33 through the razors again to get my

24:35 offense going again. That's what makes

24:37 him special. He's a special fighter. He

24:39 really is. And I respect him

24:41 >> for what he did inside the Octon. Mainly

24:43 because he beat me on that night. like

24:45 >> and you said that's the absolute best

24:48 >> DC has ever ever been.

24:51 >> Shannon, I I was I was in such great

24:54 shape. My shoulders were like big. I was

24:57 lifting. I was running. I was training

25:00 hard. I was conditioned. I mean,

25:01 >> I was well conditioned. I was mopping.

25:03 >> You was ready to go five. If if if five

25:05 if five is what is required,

25:08 >> it's going to

25:08 >> cuz we went 25 the first time. Yes.

25:10 Right. So I And and my cardio failed me.

25:12 >> Okay. So, I was like, I need to be

25:14 better cuz it's going 25 again.

25:16 >> Okay.

25:16 >> And then ultimately, he got me with the

25:17 head kick. But,

25:19 >> uh, I was in shape, man. I was ready to

25:22 go. My mind was strong. Everything was

25:24 ready to go get the job done

25:26 >> on that night. But, he was he he got it

25:29 done. He was

25:29 >> What about him at What if y'all had

25:31 moved up? Y'all similar in age. Let's

25:32 just say for the sake of argument,

25:34 you're three years apart and now y'all

25:36 move up and y'all fight heavyweight.

25:38 >> Nah, he he wouldn't beat me at

25:39 heavyweight.

25:39 >> He couldn't beat you? I don't think so

25:41 because I was good at heavyweight. I

25:43 think I was probably better.

25:44 >> And you're probably a natural

25:45 heavyweight there.

25:47 My natural weight. I was like my natural

25:49 weight. But he almost admitted it. He he

25:51 he said in the time that we were

25:54 fighting, he goes,

25:56 >> "No, I'm not going to fight him at

25:58 heavyweight. That would be giving him

25:59 the advantage."

26:00 >> He goes, "He's bigger than me

26:02 naturally." And he goes, "No." But then

26:04 like a couple weeks ago, he was talking

26:06 about me fighting. I was like, "Bro, I'm

26:09 45 years old, man. I'm 46 now. Go fight

26:11 the dude that want to fight you." Like,

26:13 they got a big old

26:14 >> Oh, he want to fight you not

26:15 heavyweight.

26:15 >> You talking about I would have beat I

26:16 would beat DC at heavyweight. Yo, I've

26:18 been I've been retired for 5 years, my

26:20 brother,

26:20 >> right?

26:20 >> Go fight somebody else. Like, I'm good.

26:22 >> Pick on somebody your own side.

26:23 >> Go fight Tom Aspenol.

26:27 >> When you and John got into it at the at

26:30 the uh the presser,

26:32 >> the very first

26:33 >> Yeah.

26:34 >> What happened?

26:34 >> Damn. DC.

26:36 >> Hey Shannon,

26:38 it's so funny because

26:41 MMA has struggled to encapture the urban

26:45 audience.

26:45 >> Yes.

26:46 >> It really has.

26:47 >> Mhm.

26:48 >> John and I are going to fight the first

26:49 time. John and I have had a we we've

26:51 always had a history of not getting

26:53 along great.

26:54 >> Right.

26:55 >> So when the press conference happened,

26:56 we came forward at the forehead. I

26:58 pushed him. He pushed me. We flew off

26:59 the octagon. That was right in the

27:01 middle of football season in every

27:03 sports center. Everything led with that.

27:06 >> Correct.

27:06 >> Cuz it was that big.

27:08 >> Lorenzo Patina told me, he goes, "You

27:09 guys would have made so much money." He

27:11 goes, "You made great money in January,

27:13 but it was 6 months." He goes, "If y'all

27:15 fought in September," he goes, "you

27:16 can't imagine how much money you would

27:18 have made on pay-per-view."

27:19 >> But cuz the fire had died down a little

27:21 bit after 6 months passed.

27:22 >> But we had that moment where the cameras

27:24 the cameras kept recording, right?

27:26 >> It was just and we just didn't like each

27:28 other. But after the fight, I was in New

27:32 York, New Jersey, walking around like I

27:35 would always do. And that's when I

27:37 realized that being in there with him

27:40 had changed the way the public perceived

27:43 me,

27:44 >> right?

27:45 >> Cuz I'm in a very urban neighborhood,

27:47 very black, and everybody's like, "Hey,

27:50 hey, hey." But I think it was because of

27:52 what we did for each other. It hate each

27:55 other, dislike each other. We did great

27:57 business and we did elevate each other

28:00 to the to the point that when I fought

28:01 Stipe, I was able to elevate him,

28:03 >> right?

28:03 >> Because of the name recognition I got

28:05 from fighting John.

28:07 >> Look, the elephant in the room um I saw

28:11 Demetrius Johnson says because Jon

28:13 Jones, the steroid is tied to his name.

28:16 Yep.

28:16 >> He can't be in the GO conversation.

28:17 >> I don't believe that. I don't believe

28:18 that he should be considered the

28:20 greatest ball type. I've said that you

28:23 can't you can't

28:25 Shannon steroids

28:27 >> yes

28:27 >> in fighting is much different than

28:30 anything else in the world.

28:31 >> They make you stronger. They make you

28:32 faster. They give you endurance,

28:34 >> recovery ability when you train.

28:36 >> That's what you That's what it that's

28:38 mainly what steroids does. It allows you

28:40 to go to there and go hard and go hard

28:42 tomorrow and go hard the day after and

28:44 go hard the day after and go hard the

28:46 day after. That's when you grow. That's

28:48 when you become better. Y

28:50 >> because it gets to a point where you're

28:51 like, damn, I I just I can't get I can't

28:53 give you everything today.

28:54 >> Yes.

28:55 >> But you can go back to back to back.

28:57 >> And that was me at 36, right? Even

29:00 though I was the best I could ever be.

29:02 The best I could ever be. I'm working as

29:04 hard as I could ever work in my life

29:06 knowing that I have to be ready. At 36,

29:11 he's 28. Right.

29:12 >> So, he's in his prime.

29:14 >> He's in his prime. But that's the fight

29:15 that he actually tested positive and

29:17 they made it a no contest.

29:18 >> Mhm. So, while he's doing that, it's

29:21 like, like you said, he's able to keep

29:23 up with me work-wise, but exceed it

29:26 because at a point I got to say, "Hey,

29:28 coach, I got to take a morning, man. I

29:30 need it. I have to I have to take a

29:32 morning

29:32 >> and I don't know that he would need to

29:34 do that." Yeah. So, I I don't I don't I

29:36 don't uh

29:37 >> Did you suspect at the time when you

29:40 were in there with him that there's

29:41 something that might not be on the up

29:42 and up?

29:42 >> No, no, no, no. I didn't suspect. He

29:44 felt like him. He felt like he was

29:45 always strong,

29:46 >> right?

29:46 >> He was always strong. He was always big.

29:48 He was always in shape. It wasn't

29:50 nothing that surprised me.

29:52 What sucked was that was that I I felt

29:54 like I moved past it, right? Like, okay,

29:57 this dude beat me twice. This shit's

29:58 over. Like, there's nothing I'm going to

30:00 do to be the champ. Because

30:01 >> if I can't beat him, nobody else has

30:02 beaten him.

30:04 >> Hey, that's the truth, right? I was

30:06 like, yo, if I ain't beating him, the

30:08 rest of these dudes ain't beating them

30:09 because I know how much,

30:10 >> right?

30:11 >> Cuz when I fight the other ones, I

30:14 destroy them.

30:15 >> Right.

30:15 >> Right.

30:16 >> Cuz they don't have the tool. tool. They

30:17 don't have the toolbox he got now.

30:19 >> Exactly.

30:20 >> And plus, he's 6'5, 6'4 and a half. He's

30:23 long long limbs and he like he he has it

30:26 all. I mean, you can elbow, you need

30:28 >> If he if you write a checkbook, a

30:30 checklist of what you want in a fighter

30:33 at 205 to heavyweight,

30:35 >> Jon Jones, they're talking about the

30:36 White House. They're talking about a

30:37 White House fight card.

30:39 >> Hey man, we got to have some Americans

30:41 win.

30:41 >> Yes.

30:42 >> I don't you I don't like Jon Jones. It's

30:43 no secret. The whole world knows it,

30:45 >> right? I said, "Man, y'all better put

30:46 Jon Jones on there because right now we

30:48 ain't got one American in the top 10

30:50 pound for pound." I said, "If y'all want

30:52 an American dude to go get a victory,

30:54 put Jon Jones in there because he going

30:56 to win. That's what he does."

30:57 >> Yes.

30:58 >> But I at the end of the day, I still

31:00 don't believe, and I agree with DJ. It's

31:02 like you just can't have that tied to

31:04 your name, especially in fighting,

31:06 >> right?

31:07 >> And people call you the greatest of all

31:08 time.

31:09 >> He's the greatest talent,

31:10 >> right,

31:10 >> the sport has ever seen.

31:12 >> Have we That's what I was about to ask

31:14 you. Have we ever seen someone in that

31:16 sport that possessed the arsenal that he

31:19 has?

31:19 >> No.

31:20 >> No. He's by far the He's by far the most

31:22 talented person that we've had in mixed

31:24 martial arts in terms of his his length,

31:27 his skills, his mind. He's the most

31:30 talented guy we've ever had. We've had

31:32 great fighters. Demetrius Johnson was

31:33 amazing. Kabib is amazing. But Kabib did

31:37 it through grit, determination, and hard

31:38 work. He wasn't Kabib wasn't going to

31:40 run a basketball and shoot it. Jon

31:43 Jones. They got a video of Jon Jones

31:45 trying to dunk a basketball. You should

31:46 see that. That's bad. But obviously he's

31:50 he's an athlete. Look at his family.

31:52 >> Yes. Right. Got two brothers playing in

31:53 the NFL.

31:54 >> Yeah. Yeah. He he was he's the best

31:56 athlete we ever had. In terms of stero

31:59 in terms of the best fighter of all

32:00 time, I would never give that because of

32:02 that. Now, he's not the only guy that

32:05 fought on steroids. I think that before

32:08 they started doing all that testing,

32:10 >> all those guys were doing steroids.

32:12 Really?

32:12 >> I really do. They just they I mean many

32:15 of them had popped for steroids before

32:16 and I fought them

32:17 >> and they had they had figured out a way

32:19 how to cycle on and off without

32:20 >> getting cycle on and off or

32:23 uh cycle on and off or they just weren't

32:27 testing.

32:28 >> Right.

32:29 >> I I I never took a drug test until I got

32:31 into the UFC. I just went and fought.

32:33 So, I don't know what those guys were

32:35 doing. There was a guy No, no, they said

32:37 that this guy got tested positive for

32:39 something. They said USADA, who was the

32:42 testing commissioner at the time, bro,

32:43 they got a bit they got a bit like

32:46 >> I know when they're coming, right?

32:47 >> They would come at 06:00 a.m. in the

32:49 morning and I did I got tested 65 times

32:52 from USADA

32:53 >> from wrestling to then. But look at me.

32:55 I'm not on steroids.

32:57 >> Yeah.

32:57 >> But they were you hitting the numbers. I

33:00 said that publicly one time way back in

33:01 the day. The next time they came to my

33:03 house at 04:00 in the afternoon. So they

33:05 were watching but they because they had

33:07 gotten like repetitive. They they heard

33:10 fighters doing it. One guy popped for

33:12 something. Shannon, they got him at 10

33:14 PM. They said if they would have let him

33:15 go to bed and wake up the next morning,

33:16 they could have tested him, it'll have

33:18 been gone. 12 hours.

33:20 12 hours for that to get out of his

33:23 system. It's crazy the level of stuff

33:25 they have out there.

33:27 >> Well, it's just like anything. I mean,

33:29 >> they're going to come up with something

33:30 that that's in and out. They got these

33:32 peptides now.

33:36 See, and you didn't you didn't think it

33:37 was going to be you thought it was going

33:38 to have all that bite to it.

33:39 >> I don't drink.

33:40 >> No, it don't got it don't have any bite.

33:42 It don't have any bite. But the the

33:43 viral video of you finding out that he

33:46 test positive and

33:48 >> you you like you was just so broken

33:50 heart

33:50 >> heartbroken. It's like you It's like

33:52 losing your first girlfriend. I had a

33:54 girlfriend growing up and when me and

33:56 her we went crazy, right? You

33:58 >> you have sex for the first time.

34:00 >> It is all you want to do. I'm checking

34:02 myself out of school, man, to go meet

34:04 this girl. She's checking herself out of

34:06 school. She's up in the middle of the

34:07 night on the phone because her mom

34:08 doesn't let her use the phone.

34:11 >> Our parents took us together. They found

34:12 out what we were doing,

34:14 >> right?

34:14 >> They sat us in the front yard and told

34:15 us we could not see each other anymore.

34:17 >> That made

34:18 >> That's what it felt like.

34:20 Let me tell you something. I'm on the

34:21 city bus getting over that.

34:24 >> I'm telling my 35 cents, man. I'm going

34:27 to her house. Who doesn't mama go to

34:29 work? And you said

34:30 >> it was like that.

34:31 >> I will sign a waiver. I want to fight

34:33 it.

34:33 >> Heartbroken because I know how hard I

34:35 had worked. Again, it was just like

34:37 Anaheim. I worked so hard to prepare

34:40 myself.

34:41 >> Right.

34:42 >> We are. When you're fighting,

34:45 that's your business partner. Imagine

34:47 you're playing the Kansas City Chiefs

34:49 >> and on Sunday they just don't show up.

34:53 >> Think about it.

34:53 >> We done practice all week

34:55 >> that they just don't show up,

34:56 >> right?

34:57 But your game check is tied to them

35:00 showing up.

35:01 >> Yes.

35:02 >> Now you're like, "Hey man, you're

35:02 hurting my business. I know what the

35:05 first check looked like when we fought,

35:06 right?

35:07 >> I want that second check."

35:08 >> And then by the hopefully we go a third

35:10 time. You know what I'm saying? It's

35:11 like

35:12 >> that was the her of it. And then it was

35:14 UFC 200, man. We was on We were on Good

35:16 Morning America together. It was big.

35:19 And I was like, "Man, we need a It was I

35:22 was heartbroken because it's not just

35:24 me. It was my entire team that worked so

35:28 hard to make sure I was prepared to

35:30 fight that night. So yeah, I said, "I'll

35:32 sign whatever I need to." But Dana was

35:34 like, "Come on." Dana was like, "You

35:36 can't do that." You could tell he didn't

35:38 want to tell me that. You could tell it

35:39 was like he was like, "Can I talk to

35:41 you?" I was like, "What do you need me

35:42 to? What do you need?" I was staying at

35:44 the MGM signature cuz I always stayed

35:46 like at that small little one on the

35:47 side.

35:49 >> He goes, "Can you come over to the arena

35:51 right now?" And I was like, "Why?" I was

35:52 like, "It's 02:00 in the afternoon." He

35:54 goes, "I want you to I have to talk to

35:56 you about something really important."

35:58 So, I walk over with my team and he's in

36:00 the back in that hallway and he tells me

36:02 and he goes, "We have to talk to the

36:04 media." I was like, "Damn, this

36:06 everything's in place and I didn't

36:07 know." I was still just going about my

36:09 day like I was going to go cut weight to

36:11 make for the fight.

36:12 >> And he was like, "You have to address

36:13 the media." It was horrible.

36:16 >> I was up there crying and [ __ ]

36:17 >> Yeah, I know. People, man, DC, what you

36:19 crying for?

36:19 >> DC crying every time. All these these do

36:22 is cry. They got me crying multiple

36:25 times.

36:25 >> Did you drive home

36:27 >> from from

36:28 >> from Or did you fly after you found out

36:30 that the fight?

36:31 >> No. No. I fought I fought. Remember I

36:33 fought Anderson Silva two days later.

36:35 >> They got Anderson to fight. Yeah. Which

36:37 was good. I actually I got to fight

36:39 Anderson Silva which was awesome. But

36:41 thank God Anderson said yes. Not many

36:43 people would have done it.

36:44 >> No. No.

36:45 >> Not two days. No. But but is it hard

36:47 because you're fighting a a fight

36:49 because a lot I've seen people take

36:51 fights on short notice and kick the

36:52 other fighter's ass because he's not

36:54 prepared to fight that guy. You prepared

36:56 to fight a guy with one style and this

36:58 guy has a different style and you're

36:59 like

37:00 >> and something bad could have happened.

37:01 So I was surprised you even took that.

37:03 >> So I took the fight because I want I

37:05 dude I wanted to fight bad like when you

37:07 want you want to fight. You want the

37:09 check and you want to fight.

37:11 >> You want the check but you want to fight

37:13 like

37:13 >> right cuz that's what you do.

37:14 >> I got all that weight. I was already 215

37:16 pounds. Like I don't want to go through

37:17 all that, right? And then two months

37:19 they go, you got to do it again. Right.

37:20 >> Because as a champion, I would fight

37:23 >> two times a year max. Yes.

37:25 >> Right. So I'm like, I don't want to have

37:26 to go through that again. So I would I I

37:29 I fought Anderson and it it wasn't a

37:31 great fight because again, I was so

37:33 nervous,

37:33 >> right,

37:34 >> dude? I was in the octagon. I looked

37:35 across and I was like the very first UFC

37:37 I ever went to, I went to Philadelphia

37:40 to watch Anderson Silva beat Forest

37:41 Griffin. And I mean, Anderson was

37:43 flexing on him. He's like moving

37:44 sideways, punching him with one hand

37:46 force is just falling down. He finishes

37:48 the guy that was the UFC light

37:50 heavyweight champion. I was like,

37:52 >> "Damn, this is crazy. I'm fighting

37:53 Anderson."

37:54 >> I'm in the octagon. I go to the middle.

37:56 When I walk back to the side, I look

37:59 behind me and I said, "Oh my god, that's

38:00 actually Anderson Silva standing over

38:02 there."

38:02 >> Like seriously,

38:03 >> I'm really fighting a legend.

38:04 >> I'm really fighting Anderson Silva.

38:06 >> Yeah.

38:06 >> Yeah. That was the first I've never had

38:08 that happen to me in my my life. It was

38:11 always somebody's got to die. Except for

38:13 when I fought Anderson, I was like,

38:14 >> you're like, I don't want to beat this

38:15 man.

38:15 >> I got to fight Anderson Silva. But then

38:17 once I got then I started trying to kick

38:19 No, I never had that problem.

38:21 >> You

38:22 >> You don't take You don't take it easy,

38:23 don't do

38:24 >> Dan Henderson was my idol. He was on the

38:26 Olympic team. I choke him unconscious.

38:28 >> Damn, D.

38:29 >> I beat the [ __ ] out of him.

38:32 >> You don't feel bad?

38:33 >> Hell no. Somebody got to die, Jay.

38:36 Somebody got to get it right. Will you

38:39 play your brother in football? If you

38:40 play st.

38:41 >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We grow. Oh,

38:42 >> you want to lose?

38:43 >> No. I'm trying to kill him. I'm trying

38:44 to kill him. And we love each other.

38:45 >> Tell him about it afterward.

38:46 >> Yes.

38:48 >> John retires and everybody's like, "Hold

38:50 on, bro. You retired." And then two

38:52 weeks later, you talking about you in

38:54 protocol again, testing protocol.

38:55 >> Yeah. Yeah.

38:56 >> That pissed you off, didn't it?

38:58 >> So, when he retired, it it didn't I just

39:01 wanted him to I wanted to see him fight

39:03 Tom Aspenol. I just want him I wanted to

39:05 see him fight Tom

39:06 >> Aspenol. That good? He good, Shannon. He

39:09 literally has everything you want in a

39:10 heavyweight. He's big. He's physical. He

39:14 can wrestle. He's fast.

39:16 I Michael Bisping

39:20 once said to me, "Oh man, I'm telling he

39:22 could be like Muhammad Ali MMA." I said,

39:24 "Man, you going crazy." I said, "You

39:26 You're a person that works at the

39:28 company. You're a person that take

39:29 people take your opinion seriously. You

39:31 cannot be that strong on one side." He

39:34 goes, "I swear it's true." He's fighting

39:37 a guy uh named Sergey who had knocked

39:40 out 10 straight people. Nobody could go

39:42 around with Sergey. Tom Aspenog knocks

39:44 him out in a round. Walks into the thing

39:46 and hugs Michael Bismick. I was like, I

39:48 thought I said Bismick, I thought you

39:50 were like his advocate. You advocating

39:52 for this dude. But I'm like, he's

39:53 actually that good, right? And then he

39:55 beats up on Curtis Blades. He beats

39:57 everybody.

39:57 >> And so when I think about it, I'm like,

39:59 okay, now we get to see John. Because

40:02 John and I did this thing called counter

40:04 punch where he sat on one side, I sat on

40:06 the other with Joe Rogan.

40:07 >> Yeah.

40:07 >> And John said

40:10 it it was so it was crazy cuz we just

40:12 hated each other so much. We were just

40:14 talking,

40:14 >> right?

40:15 >> John said to me, he said, "At the end of

40:18 the day,

40:21 I'm better than you because I'm

40:23 younger." He goes,

40:26 "You can't beat me in the basketball

40:28 game." I go, "Well, that's debatable.

40:29 you know, you can't out swim me, you

40:31 can't outrun me. He said, because every

40:33 day you wake up, you're a day older and

40:37 you look in the mirror and you see a 36

40:39 year old man and I look in, I'm in my

40:41 absolute prime. I'm 28.

40:44 >> He said, "You can't be better than me

40:46 because the laws of life don't allow for

40:48 a 36-y old man to be better than a 28-y

40:52 old man when we're doing the same

40:54 thing."

40:55 Tom Aspenol is 30 now. Jon Jones is 38.

40:59 Not a person. I want to see it on the

41:01 opposite side

41:02 >> because he said and he said, "Well, he

41:04 should be favored because you know he's

41:06 much younger and I've heard you and

41:08 other fighters say, "Well, you were you

41:10 were

41:10 >> the whole time

41:11 >> the older guy gave you an opportunity."

41:13 >> He dropped the ladder.

41:14 >> So, return the favor and give this guy.

41:16 You don't think there's any chance that

41:18 Jon could beat him?

41:19 >> I do. That's the problem. If I had I

41:23 said to my I said gun to my head, if I

41:25 had to choose, I would probably say Jon

41:26 Jones would win. Wow. It's all I've seen

41:28 him do. I've seen him fight. He's right.

41:32 He's everyone. This is always the next

41:35 best guy. This guy's going to beat me.

41:37 This guy's going to beat Jon Jones. And

41:39 what does Jon do? He vanquishes him. He

41:41 beats him.

41:41 >> They said it about Gustin.

41:43 >> They said about Gustin. Say it about me.

41:44 Said it about Rashad. Said it about

41:45 Rampage. Said it about Sir Gan. I mean,

41:47 he dirty sir Gan up.

41:49 >> I mean, the man been away for a 100

41:51 years and and walked through Sir Gan

41:53 like he was like sir Gan was me. That

41:55 was embarrassing to DC. DC that was

41:57 embarrass

41:59 DC that was embarrassing.

42:00 >> I be trying to stay off of Cereal, man.

42:02 Cuz I like Sirill. Yo, when Sirill was

42:04 on the ground and he looked at him like

42:06 I was like he looked like he saw a

42:08 ghost. He was so in awe of John that he

42:12 couldn't even compete with him. I was

42:14 like, "Bro, he about to fight for the

42:15 world title again." Imagine if imagine

42:17 if Sir Gan went win and John go, "Okay,

42:19 okay, I'm back."

42:20 >> Yeah.

42:20 >> Well, that'll piss somebody off. That

42:22 would piss people off cuz if Sirill

42:24 beats Tom cuz he's Sirill is that good.

42:28 >> He is.

42:28 >> He's that good. He could beat Tom

42:30 Aspenol.

42:31 >> No, but Dana Dana ain't going to let

42:33 that happen.

42:33 >> What if John's like, "Yo, all right.

42:35 >> You know, you know Dana won't let that

42:37 happen. Dana will not let Jon come back

42:39 and fight Sir for the heavyweight

42:41 title." He like, "No, no, no. You got to

42:43 fight. You got to fight."

42:44 >> The ultimate move of all time. I would

42:46 laugh at that [ __ ]

42:48 >> I would be happy. Like, John, do you you

42:50 you'll be cold for that one. Yeah. Okay.

42:53 You say you can't put uh uh John as as

42:55 your goat. Give me about Rushmore

42:57 fighters.

42:58 >> Demetrius Johnson. Okay. George St.

43:01 Pierre.

43:02 >> Okay.

43:03 >> Kabib.

43:04 >> Mhm.

43:04 >> Kabib was undefeated. Nobody beat him.

43:08 Fourth.

43:10 God, that's where it gets tough. That's

43:13 where it gets tough cuz you feel like

43:15 you want to put like when we talk about

43:17 just accomplishments, no one's more

43:19 accomplished than Amanda Nunees,

43:20 >> right? Can Can I really put her on the

43:22 Mount Rushmore of fighting? But George,

43:26 Demetrius, Kabib,

43:30 God, there are some good guys. Chuck

43:31 Liddell was good, man. Chuck Liddell's

43:33 kind of responsible for us being there.

43:35 Randy Coutur won two titles in his

43:37 bracket. I think that fourth place would

43:39 belong to one of those guys. I think

43:42 somebody like that because

43:44 >> I I can't put I would never put myself

43:46 up there. Right. Right. Right.

43:47 >> But I'm like right in that

43:49 >> Right. four to seven range of

43:51 >> I thought you might put Anderson.

43:54 >> Anderson had the Anderson had the

43:56 steroid. Yeah. Right. Like I can't put

43:58 Anderson. Like I would like to put

44:00 Anderson. If if I'm saying all those

44:02 guys included then obviously John and

44:03 Anderson are on that Mount Rushmore,

44:06 >> but

44:07 >> I don't do that. I don't I refuse it.

44:09 It's not in fighting.

44:12 >> Barry Bonds was a Hall of Famer before

44:14 he even went to San Francisco.

44:15 >> Correct.

44:16 >> Right. Yeah.

44:16 >> Plus he's hitting with a baseball bat.

44:18 He's not punching someone right

44:20 >> in the face.

44:22 >> Women fighters.

44:24 What did What did Ronda Rousey do for

44:28 MMA?

44:28 >> Everything for women. Dana on record

44:32 said, "I will never have women fighting

44:34 in the UFC or something very close to

44:36 that."

44:37 >> Then Ronda came along and she just

44:40 opened up the floodgates. Yes. And now

44:42 Dana goes very in his life very rarely

44:44 does he make decisions where he's like I

44:47 really messed up. He openly goes Ronda

44:50 Rousey coming and and making me take on

44:52 female fighting is one of the best

44:53 decisions I've ever made cuz it gave me

44:55 Amanda Nunez gave me Jean Lee Valentina

44:57 Chevchenko. It's like all these women

45:00 have an opportunity because of Ronda.

45:02 >> No Ronda Rousey like I don't know if

45:04 women still today fight in the UFC.

45:06 That's how important she is. Could she

45:09 have been better?

45:11 >> I think she was at the right time also,

45:13 >> right?

45:14 >> The girls just weren't well-rounded

45:15 enough to compete with her.

45:16 >> And when she got somebody that was

45:18 wellrounded,

45:18 >> they they you saw what Amanda did to

45:20 her.

45:20 >> I saw what Holly Holmes kicked

45:21 >> Holly kicked her in the head.

45:22 >> That That was probably the beginning of

45:24 the end, wasn't it?

45:24 >> Yeah. Well, you know, again, like you

45:27 know when it's done, but at the end is

45:30 when the money gets better than it's

45:31 ever been.

45:32 >> So, yeah. She couldn't have beat him. If

45:34 she couldn't have beaten Holly, she was

45:36 not going to beat Amanda.

45:37 >> No. But I think it was just such a great

45:39 pull to have her back that she did it.

45:43 >> You mentioned this, the UFC at the White

45:45 House.

45:46 >> Dana, look, I was at the uh when they

45:48 had it at the sphere.

45:49 >> Oh, you went, huh?

45:50 >> I went. It was It was amazing. It was

45:52 amazing. And I wouldn't put anything if

45:54 if Dana say they going to have a fight

45:55 on the moon.

45:59 I don't know what airline flying to the

46:02 but it's going to happen.

46:03 >> It's going to happen. If he says they're

46:04 going to have it on the White House lawn

46:07 now, I don't know how they going to pat

46:09 everybody down and frisk everybody, do

46:11 background checks because and maybe it's

46:13 just closed circuit and they're really

46:15 only a handful of staff there.

46:17 >> No, no, I think it's going to be an

46:18 event. They said they want 20,000 in

46:20 there

46:21 >> at the White House.

46:22 >> At the White House.

46:23 >> They got an Easter egg hunt at the White

46:25 House when they put 28,000 on the

46:26 Easter. Look,

46:27 >> but them kids

46:28 >> I didn't Hey Shannon, I swear to God.

46:30 Shannon, I swear to God, I I was not

46:33 believing it until I saw that they have

46:34 that Easter egg hunt there. I was like,

46:36 "Wow." Well, then it's possible because

46:37 right now when when Trump goes to a

46:40 fight,

46:41 >> Yeah.

46:41 >> we get background checks.

46:43 >> Yes.

46:43 >> The night before they go to the arena,

46:45 they're sweeping. They sweep it. The

46:47 morning of the fight before he shows up.

46:50 >> I I don't know. But

46:52 >> they I told Dana this recently. We were

46:53 in New Orleans and I said,

46:55 >> "You're going to the White House for

46:56 real." He goes, I said, "Because you

47:00 said we got a year, we're a year away."

47:03 Yeah.

47:04 >> He was talking about He was talking

47:06 about something on an interview and he

47:08 goes, "We still got a year. The world's

47:10 going to change in MMA by that point." I

47:12 said, "You're speaking indefinite." I

47:14 go, "This is happening." Yeah, we're

47:16 going to go We're going to go watch a

47:17 fight at the White House. That's crazy.

48:13 You said, "Look, we don't have really

48:16 any Americans in the pound-for-pound top

48:18 10. And if we just can't have, you know,

48:22 Barners coming in and winning all the

48:24 fights at at the White House.

48:25 >> No, we got to win.

48:26 >> So, we got to you got to put Jon Jones.

48:28 >> Put John there.

48:31 >> Call C. I'm calling him Captain America.

48:34 But

48:34 >> somebody got to win.

48:35 >> But Dana don't But Dana wants for sure

48:37 thing. Knows that guys are going to be

48:40 he can count on.

48:41 >> I think he's I think he's going to fight

48:42 at the White House. He has to.

48:45 >> He has to fight at the White House.

48:47 >> Aspenol. Don't I mean I don't know why

48:51 he won't fight this dude. I I I said

48:53 this D if I was still fighting I'd have

48:56 fought Tom Aspenol already. I just would

48:59 have did it. Like the bigger the

49:00 challenge the better. It's like

49:02 >> go prove yourself. But I don't know why

49:04 he'll do it. But he might have to fight

49:07 Tom A. Like you said Dana's going to

49:09 make him fight Tom.

49:10 >> What I mean how much money would they

49:12 need for uh uh DC to come out of

49:14 retirement to fight at the White House?

49:15 Yeah.

49:16 >> I cannot fight. They got 20 million for

49:18 you.

49:18 >> I'm still not doing it. [ __ ] I can't

49:20 train. I can't train. I go, dude. I'm

49:23 doing CrossFit. I do live. I I was just

49:26 today practicing how I'm going to do

49:27 sumo uh deadlifts. I'm like, I'm doing

49:30 sumo deadlifts. I'm like, that's I'm

49:32 just getting excited to go do my sumo

49:34 deadlifts. Jay, I can't fight cuz I

49:36 can't I can't I was I was sparring the

49:39 other day. I started I started a team,

49:41 okay, of guys that I'm training, helping

49:43 career their careers.

49:44 >> I was sparring. One of them punched me

49:47 in my rib with a straight right hand.

49:49 Boom. Right here. Dude, it was the most

49:53 painful shot I taken. My rib come out.

49:57 >> Right. My rib come out.

49:59 >> I'm in pain. Sh. I can't get off my

50:00 couch. I'm just like, uh, every time I

50:02 get off my couch, I'm rolling to my

50:04 knees

50:05 >> to then push up because I can't squeeze

50:07 my core. Right. Every time I squeeze my

50:09 cord hurts, man. I get I go I go take a

50:11 nap. I'm just sleeping, I guess. And I'm

50:13 because I'm sleeping rolling. I sleep. I

50:15 roll over the top of it, pop it back in

50:17 place. But I'm like, I couldn't do this

50:19 every day like I used to.

50:21 >> I always had separated ribs or black

50:23 eyes, and I I just couldn't do that

50:25 anymore. It's too This This life is too

50:27 comfortable what I do now,

50:28 >> right?

50:29 >> You make good living. You don't need to

50:30 go big punch, kick.

50:31 >> I don't want to fight no more, man.

50:32 Plus, like, come on. Go put some pads

50:34 on. Go tackle somebody.

50:36 >> No, no, no. You know what I'm saying?

50:37 You want to ask me?

50:37 >> Two artificial heels, bone bone. I'm I'm

50:40 good.

50:40 >> The pain is too great. I think that's

50:42 what people take for granted, like how

50:45 great the pain is that we endure to do

50:49 what we did,

50:50 >> right?

50:50 >> It it sucks.

50:51 >> I mean, before I got my hips replaced,

50:53 DC, I just thought the pain that I was

50:55 in was normal because I had dealt with

50:57 it for so long.

50:57 >> Yeah.

50:58 >> And you get to and you're like, "Okay,

50:59 this is my new normal." And then the

51:02 doctor says, "No, you don't have to live

51:03 like that."

51:04 >> How much better does it feel?

51:05 >> A thousand.

51:06 >> Really?

51:07 >> I mean, there was no position that I

51:08 could get in that was comfortable. If I

51:10 lay down, it hurt. If I stood, if it

51:12 hurt, it walked, it hurt. Sitting hurt.

51:15 Standing too long, it hurt. There was no

51:17 position in which my body didn't hurt.

51:20 My hips didn't hurt.

51:21 >> That's bad. I got I don't have that.

51:24 Thank God I don't have that.

51:25 >> Yeah,

51:26 >> cuz that that [ __ ] seems so big.

51:28 >> It is. What about What about Conor

51:30 McGregor at the White House?

51:33 >> Okay. [ __ ] man. It's over, bro.

51:36 >> It's It's over for him.

51:37 >> It's over, dog. There, man. Man, this

51:40 dude Conor McGregor be he is tripping.

51:42 Conor McGregor tripping.

51:43 >> He made too much money, huh?

51:44 >> He made way too much. He went from

51:46 plumbing to making he sold that liquor

51:48 for what? 500 million.

51:50 >> Yeah.

51:50 >> It's too much,

51:51 >> right? He got 100 million for fighting

51:53 Floyd.

51:53 >> Got 100 million for fighting Floyd. Then

51:55 he was doing pay-per-views like nothing.

51:56 And him and Kabib did two and a half

51:58 million pay-per-views.

52:00 >> These dudes, he made too much money.

52:02 Connor says he wants to fight all the

52:05 time and everybody kind of they jump to

52:08 it, but it's like he wants to stay

52:10 relevant, right?

52:11 >> He wants to stay in the news. He wants

52:13 to stay he wants the notoriety of being

52:15 Conor McGregor without having to be

52:17 right

52:17 >> Conor McGregor, right?

52:19 >> And that kind of sucks because when he

52:21 was the man, I bet you tapped in

52:24 >> I bet you tapped into the UFC more than

52:26 >> because he could because he could sell a

52:27 fight.

52:27 >> He could sell a fight.

52:28 >> He could sell it. But him and Kabib was

52:31 the best.

52:32 >> Did you think he was just onedimensional

52:34 and that's why

52:35 >> he was good? He was very good.

52:37 >> But when when they got him on the

52:39 ground, DC, he couldn't get up.

52:40 >> They couldn't get him on the ground.

52:41 >> Yeah, they did.

52:42 >> Kabib got him on the ground.

52:44 >> That Kabib was a different person,

52:46 though. Like

52:47 >> him and Kabib really didn't like each

52:48 other. That's per, you know, sometimes

52:50 you like, oh, we just selling the fight.

52:51 But it seemed that it it was add it was

52:54 a little more to it. Like he like Khabib

52:57 sincerely and genuinely did not like

52:59 Carson.

52:59 >> He hates he won't say his name still

53:01 today. He still does not say his name

53:04 >> because of what he said about his

53:05 religion and about dad.

53:06 >> He still won't say his name. Last week

53:08 he did an interview in New York.

53:10 >> He says this guy, he'll never say his

53:12 name. He hates him. Dude, they're in the

53:14 octagon and Connor goes, he whispers

53:16 after the third round after Kabib, it's

53:19 just business. Kabir goes, "No, it

53:20 ain't. No, it ain't. You don't mess with

53:23 them dudes, man. Them Russian dudes

53:24 there. And then when he like when he had

53:26 him the the ref the ref had to do a

53:28 little bit extra. DC you saw that DC he

53:31 was

53:31 >> he was going to let him he wasn't going

53:32 to let him go.

53:33 >> He was going to put him to sleep.

53:34 Shannon he was holding him and he said I

53:36 kicked your ass. I kicked your ass and

53:39 he kind of was like then he jumped over

53:41 the fence.

53:41 >> Yes.

53:42 >> And try to beat his team.

53:45 >> He thought he I was like whoa. But dude

53:48 he had him. He was not going to let him

53:50 go because he felt so his family got so

53:53 disrespected by this dude that he wanted

53:56 to end him. And and honestly, sometimes

53:58 you bite off more than you could chew.

53:59 >> Yeah.

54:00 >> Cuz cuz Connor got beat bad that night.

54:02 He did. He got beat bad.

54:04 >> I mean, and the thing But here's the

54:05 thing that that shocked a lot of people.

54:07 >> Connor made Kabib He really did make

54:09 Kabib the biggest a bigger star. Yeah.

54:12 Like we talked about me and Jones, he

54:14 Khabib went from I think he had two or

54:17 three million followers on Instagram.

54:19 >> The next morning 10 million.

54:21 >> Wow.

54:22 >> After that fight and all that happened.

54:24 10 million.

54:25 >> Crazy. 7 million a night. That's a big

54:29 jump.

54:29 >> You think Kabib would come out of

54:30 retirement?

54:31 >> Kabib told me on we did a thing a while

54:34 back where Kabib said they offered him

54:35 $40 million to fight. He said no. He

54:38 ain't coming back. If if they offered

54:40 him 40 mill and he hasn't come back yet,

54:42 he ain't coming back.

54:43 >> No.

54:44 >> No. He in Dagistan.

54:45 >> Well, they if they

54:46 >> I bet in Dagistan you can make a million

54:48 dollars and be good for the rest of your

54:49 life.

54:49 >> Yeah.

54:50 >> Right. In that place.

54:53 >> Well, if they offered Khabib 40 million,

54:55 what they offer John Jones to fight

54:56 Aspenol?

54:57 >> I think they offer John said he wanted

54:59 30 and I think they got the money. They

55:02 got 30 for him. And he said no.

55:05 They got 30 for him. And he said, "Hey,

55:07 let me tell you something. I just told

55:08 you I'm barbecue meat. 30.

55:14 >> All of a sudden, you don't hurt me.

55:16 >> [ __ ] I might test positive after it's

55:19 over.

55:20 [Laughter]

55:22 >> What is it about? What is it about

55:23 Dagistan that the guys that are they can

55:26 wrestle? Now look, I I've seen somebody

55:28 followed some of like those wrestler

55:30 wrestlers.

55:31 >> Yeah.

55:31 >> They really I'm talking about those guys

55:33 that go to the Olympics. That's a whole

55:35 different level of wrestling. them do. H

55:37 >> how did they get so good? They just So

55:40 over there they put them in wrestling.

55:42 They put them in in both styles. Then at

55:44 like five, six years old, they identify

55:46 like where a kid's going to be better

55:48 and that's all they do all the way up

55:50 through school. Kabib's Kabib and Islam

55:52 started doing sombo when they were super

55:53 young

55:54 >> together. Right. Right. With his dad. So

55:57 their whole life they did combat sombo.

55:59 Combat Sama was actually like ghee tops

56:02 uh punching. Yeah.

56:03 >> Grappling like

56:05 >> they were essentially doing MMA as like

56:08 kids,

56:08 >> right?

56:09 >> And then

56:10 >> just keep getting better. I I think I

56:13 think I think for my son,

56:17 >> right?

56:17 >> Mhm.

56:18 >> To

56:19 have the mentality that I have or had,

56:23 it's impossible. His life's too

56:25 comfortable.

56:26 >> Yeah. Okay.

56:27 >> His life's too comfortable.

56:30 you and and your brother and your to

56:32 your children, they can't even make

56:35 themselves think like you did growing up

56:37 where you grew up and how you grew up,

56:38 >> right?

56:39 >> So, it's like

56:41 they they all live like that because

56:43 while Kabib I I want to see Kabib's son

56:46 and then the next Islam's son

56:49 >> then we could see if how it does over

56:52 there because for them it was the way to

56:54 live,

56:55 >> right?

56:56 >> And change all of their liv

56:57 >> everybody lives. Yeah.

57:01 >> So when my kids like playing football

57:03 >> and he's like I want to do this and I

57:05 want to do this. I go well you got to be

57:07 at every practice. You got to go with

57:09 your individual coach.

57:11 >> Like you got to go on Sunday whenever

57:13 you go do all your speed and agility.

57:15 You have to get up early in the morning

57:16 to lift weights. I go because while you

57:19 are living where you live and how you

57:20 live, there's a kid like me

57:24 >> that's doing the same thing but without

57:26 the fallback of what my dad did to make

57:29 sure that I'm okay when all this is

57:31 done,

57:31 >> right?

57:32 >> So I don't know that we can h how how

57:34 does Christian McCaffrey develop the

57:36 mentality that his father had? Unless

57:38 his father came with a whole promote,

57:39 you know, Ed, maybe he had a whole bunch

57:41 of money,

57:41 >> but I don't know how does he develop

57:43 that mentality?

57:43 >> I'm a firm believer when I look at the

57:45 Mannings.

57:46 >> Yep. them.

57:47 >> Argie Manning and and and his his and

57:50 Peyton and Eli,

57:51 >> they just teach him.

57:52 >> Yeah.

57:53 >> I mean, it it's it's something special

57:55 for you to for your dad to have and

57:59 says, "No, I want to get it." See, I

58:01 still have a healthy respect for

58:02 Bronnie.

58:03 >> Yes.

58:03 >> Because he still, you know, he the

58:05 likelihood of you having a historically

58:08 or a transcendent great parent and then

58:10 the child be equally as transcendent and

58:13 great, it's just not going to happen.

58:15 is great. King Griffy King Griffy senior

58:17 was a good baseball player, but he

58:19 wasn't junior.

58:19 >> No, he wasn't.

58:20 >> Bobby Barnes was an unbelievable player.

58:23 He wasn't Barry.

58:24 >> Nope.

58:25 >> Nope.

58:25 >> And so to ask Kareem had son, Magic got

58:29 son. To ask their sons, their product to

58:32 be just what your dad, it ain't

58:34 happening.

58:34 >> So for the dad for for Ken Griffy Jr.

58:36 and Barry, their dads were good.

58:39 >> Yes.

58:39 >> They they just weren't them.

58:41 >> They weren't them. So the second one was

58:43 better. But to ask the next one to be

58:45 better than the one that's the greatest.

58:46 >> Just imagine Barry Bond's son being

58:48 Barry Bonds or better.

58:50 >> No, it's like it's like Vladimir

58:51 Guerrero.

58:52 >> Yeah,

58:52 >> he was really good. But his son now is

58:56 >> with the same name.

58:57 >> Yes.

58:58 >> With the same name better than his dad.

59:01 That's crazy. So for him to have another

59:03 one that does that will be very hard.

59:05 But like so

59:07 >> where's like where's Pton's son?

59:10 >> Where's Eli's son? He Pton said his son

59:12 went through his camp a couple weeks

59:13 ago. I saw that.

59:14 >> Yes.

59:14 >> But is he

59:15 >> It's gonna be It's gonna be It's gonna

59:16 be very I mean, come on.

59:17 >> It's gonna be hard.

59:18 >> Yes. Tom Tom has a son.

59:20 >> Yep.

59:21 >> But you But here's the thing.

59:23 >> But is Yeah. Right. So just imagine Tom

59:29 Brady Tom Brady's son Benjamin

59:33 >> being as good as Tom.

59:35 >> God ain't going to bless you like that,

59:37 bro. I'm sorry.

59:39 Well, he ain't going to b he ain't going

59:40 to bless you like that. That's not

59:42 >> It's I don't think so, man. It's hard.

59:44 >> Yes.

59:44 >> But they can like like But even for

59:46 LeBron James Jr.

59:48 >> Yes.

59:49 >> LeBron James Jr.

59:50 >> Yes.

59:51 >> to be in the NBA.

59:52 >> Mhm.

59:53 >> It's nuts. And then to have another one

59:55 that's supposed to be even better than

59:56 the other one.

59:57 >> Yes. But to to to expect him and I think

1:00:00 the thing is

1:00:01 >> LeBron's done everything right.

1:00:02 >> Yes. But to expect a child to be LeBron

1:00:06 or Kareem's son to be him or Magic son

1:00:08 to be him, come on, bro. That's not

1:00:10 that's not to happen.

1:00:11 >> LeBron James Jr. If he can go in, if he

1:00:12 can stay in the league for 10 years,

1:00:15 that to me would be astounding because

1:00:17 And he will. He will.

1:00:19 >> Yes.

1:00:20 >> But to be in there 10 years after what

1:00:21 your dad did with all that pressure,

1:00:24 from the moment he picked up a

1:00:25 basketball, there was pressure on him

1:00:27 >> cuz the expectation you got to be cuz

1:00:29 everybody know who your dad is. My son

1:00:30 would wrestle and I would see people,

1:00:34 oh, he just I just my kid just beat DC's

1:00:36 son. I'm like, but it's not that DC.

1:00:39 >> It's not. You didn't, right? I just beat

1:00:41 DC's boy.

1:00:42 >> I had Kim Griffy Jr. on and when his son

1:00:45 Trey was coming up, he played baseball.

1:00:48 And the people in the stand would say,

1:00:51 "He ain't his dad." And his dad would

1:00:53 say, "Name five people who are." Who?

1:00:56 [Laughter]

1:01:00 Oh, I like that. So, what did what they

1:01:02 what would they say then?

1:01:03 >> They couldn't say anything. I mean I

1:01:05 mean guy would you know he was an MVP.

1:01:07 He I mean he

1:01:08 >> he did everything.

1:01:09 >> Yes. He's one of the greatest he he's

1:01:11 one of the greatest players. I mean the

1:01:13 sweetest swing ever. 600 home. Come on.

1:01:16 >> He ain't going to be him.

1:01:17 >> No. And it's and it's okay. But the kid

1:01:19 has to uh accept that that it's okay.

1:01:23 And a lot of people you you were having

1:01:24 we were having a conversation about my

1:01:26 brother. I embraced it. See, I never

1:01:28 lived in the shadow. I embraced it.

1:01:30 Every number he had, I got the exact

1:01:32 same number. He was three in high

1:01:34 school, I was three in high school. He

1:01:35 was two in college, I was two in

1:01:36 college. He was 84, I was 84. Every car

1:01:40 that he had, I got.

1:01:41 >> So, I never looked at like And when

1:01:43 people told me, I man, you're not going

1:01:45 to be like your brother. Like, watch

1:01:46 >> watch me

1:01:47 >> watch.

1:01:48 >> But not many people have that.

1:01:49 >> Yeah. Yeah. They they

1:01:50 >> Not many people have that dog in them

1:01:52 like that. Like there's there's a dog

1:01:54 about that mentality that most people

1:01:56 don't have. Yes.

1:01:57 >> Especially kid Especially a kid that

1:01:59 wakes up and he's sleeping in a

1:02:00 beautiful home

1:02:02 >> with everything he'd ever want in his

1:02:03 life. Like it's hard for that kid to go.

1:02:06 >> My kid gets up in the morning at 06:30,

1:02:09 >> three days a week and he lifts weights,

1:02:10 >> right?

1:02:10 >> My kid does wrestling practice at 02:00

1:02:12 in the afternoon. Then he goes to

1:02:14 football practice at 05:30 in the

1:02:16 afternoon. He does that four days a

1:02:18 week. Then on Sundays, he meets with a

1:02:20 with with his private coach to do

1:02:22 football training, right? where he does

1:02:24 speed, agility, right? He catches

1:02:26 passes. He goes through his coverages

1:02:28 and his reads,

1:02:29 >> right?

1:02:30 >> For me, that's my son going, "Dad, I

1:02:33 want to try to do something great."

1:02:35 >> I said, "Pop, if it works, awesome. If

1:02:39 it doesn't, you gave yourself a chance.

1:02:41 >> That's it.

1:02:42 >> You took advantage of every opportunity

1:02:44 you had. Everything that we have

1:02:47 accured, you use to try to better

1:02:49 yourself,

1:02:50 >> right?

1:02:50 >> If it works, great. If it doesn't, you

1:02:52 never skipped out on the work, right?

1:02:54 >> That's all I care about,

1:02:55 >> right?

1:02:55 >> And I'm fine with that. And maybe it

1:02:58 does, maybe it doesn't. But he's given

1:03:00 himself a chance even though he doesn't

1:03:02 have to.

1:03:03 >> Right.

1:03:03 >> That's what I love.

1:03:04 >> Good. Let me ask you, how did you and

1:03:06 Kabib become such great fans?

1:03:08 >> That's my boy right there, man. He

1:03:10 walked into the gym. He walked into the

1:03:12 gym by himself.

1:03:16 King Moal

1:03:18 uh brought him from New Jersey. Mhm.

1:03:21 >> He wanted to come and train with all the

1:03:22 wrestlers. Barely spoke a lick of

1:03:24 English.

1:03:25 >> Walked in the gym, stayed at uh Extended

1:03:27 State America right up the street from

1:03:29 from uh AKA. And he would walk back and

1:03:31 forth by himself from the the the hotel

1:03:34 to the practice. And on his first day, I

1:03:36 was like, "Oh, a little Russian kid."

1:03:38 Cuz I spent a lot of time there when I

1:03:39 was wrestling. We started kind of

1:03:41 talking a little bit and it just it

1:03:43 grew. And then I just understand how

1:03:45 much of a

1:03:46 >> he's like a really good human being.

1:03:48 He's a good person, real strong values,

1:03:50 and he's he's the best. I think I think

1:03:53 he's the best fighter ever.

1:03:55 >> Really?

1:03:55 >> I do. Yeah, I do. I I saw a kid that

1:03:58 came in there with limited striking.

1:04:01 >> Mhm.

1:04:02 >> He told you exactly what he was going to

1:04:04 do every single time and he did it. He

1:04:07 was beating Michael Johnson up one time

1:04:08 telling him, "Brother, you know I

1:04:10 deserve a title fight, right?

1:04:11 >> You need to give up.

1:04:12 >> Give up."

1:04:13 >> Like,

1:04:13 >> yeah,

1:04:14 >> that's how dominant. And he sat in the

1:04:15 pocket with Connor and knocked Connor

1:04:17 down.

1:04:17 >> Knocked him down after Connor had boxed

1:04:20 Floyd Mayweather for nine rounds. He he

1:04:22 stood with him and knocked him down.

1:04:24 >> Yeah, I think he's the best man. I think

1:04:25 he's

1:04:27 he just stands for something so much

1:04:28 bigger than just fighting. And I think

1:04:30 he like I think he I think he uh

1:04:34 I think he he I think he obviously

1:04:36 elevates the people around him, which is

1:04:38 very important.

1:04:39 >> But he also is like a he's like a

1:04:42 guiding light for a lot of people that

1:04:43 follow him. And he does things the right

1:04:45 way.

1:04:45 >> Right. There's this viral clip going

1:04:48 around that he refuses to shake this

1:04:50 this lady's hand out of respect for his

1:04:52 wife.

1:04:52 >> Yep. And for his uh his religion his

1:04:55 religion.

1:04:55 >> And if you know his religion, that's

1:04:57 that's that's the way it is.

1:04:59 >> That's the way it is.

1:05:00 >> Right. But not many men are willing to

1:05:02 do that, especially in that moment.

1:05:04 >> Right.

1:05:04 >> Right. Kate Kate uh Kate Scott. Kate

1:05:07 Kate Scott.

1:05:08 >> She's she's a great analyst.

1:05:10 >> Yes. But I think the reason it got so

1:05:12 odd was because that kid reacted the way

1:05:14 that he did.

1:05:15 >> There was a YouTube kid that was up

1:05:17 there with him

1:05:18 >> and he kind of was like, "Oh my god."

1:05:19 Like speed. I show speed.

1:05:21 >> Yeah.

1:05:22 >> And the way he acted was like cuz he

1:05:23 shook everyone's hand. But then he just

1:05:25 >> politely said

1:05:28 >> and then I'm pretty sure he explained it

1:05:29 to her afterwards.

1:05:30 >> Yes.

1:05:31 >> And then but again it's live. It's live

1:05:33 TV, right? Things happen.

1:05:34 >> But that's respect to his wife. And then

1:05:36 obvious honestly respect to Kate. It's

1:05:38 actually a respectful gesture to the

1:05:40 person, right? You're refusing to shake

1:05:42 hands because he as a married man should

1:05:44 not shake the hand of another woman.

1:05:46 >> Wow.

1:05:48 What separate Russian fighters from

1:05:50 American fighters?

1:05:52 >> I don't think that I don't think that I

1:05:55 I don't think that is much more to it

1:05:57 than just the the

1:06:02 that that need to change their lives.

1:06:05 >> Yeah.

1:06:06 >> Right. Their need. I mean,

1:06:09 even even in not not I'm not talking

1:06:12 homeless like I'm not talking like

1:06:14 transient people that are living on the

1:06:16 street, but even our upbringing, even

1:06:20 mine where I lived in uh small house

1:06:24 after small house when I was younger.

1:06:25 Yeah.

1:06:26 >> Then my parents did all they could to

1:06:28 move us into a big house to where they

1:06:30 bought their first house for $10,000. It

1:06:32 wasn't a great house, but it was theirs.

1:06:34 that's still better

1:06:36 >> than what they have

1:06:37 >> than what they have over there.

1:06:38 >> They're like it's all concrete just

1:06:41 concrete stuff.

1:06:42 >> So yeah, it's like I think it's just

1:06:44 that mentality of need to get better

1:06:47 that makes allows for those guys to to

1:06:50 kind of just elevate themselves a little

1:06:51 more because even my upbringing and I

1:06:55 thought that I had it tough

1:06:56 >> was better than what they have there and

1:06:58 you know what we people are willing to

1:07:00 do to change their lives

1:07:01 >> for sure.

1:07:02 >> Yeah. Um, you and Connor went back and

1:07:05 forth on social media, but you said it's

1:07:08 over for Connor. I mean, the money the

1:07:10 money that he made from Floyd, the money

1:07:12 that he's made off his alcohol, the

1:07:13 money that he that he's making now to go

1:07:16 back into I mean, you're worth $300

1:07:18 million to go in there and it's like,

1:07:20 you know what? I want to get kicked in

1:07:21 my face, hit in my face, elbowed in my

1:07:23 face. Need

1:07:25 >> Yeah. There's no need there. Yeah. He

1:07:27 doesn't need that. He doesn't need this

1:07:29 anymore.

1:07:31 Marvin Haggler said, "It's hard to get

1:07:32 up in the morning when you're sleeping

1:07:33 on satin sheets." Right. Way back in the

1:07:36 day.

1:07:36 >> Yes.

1:07:37 >> There there are a few sayings in the

1:07:38 world that are untrue. Yeah. That was

1:07:41 right.

1:07:41 >> Like that that you know that one where

1:07:43 it's like

1:07:43 >> to be the champion, you got to defend

1:07:45 the belt. That's [ __ ] Ric Flair

1:07:47 started that.

1:07:49 >> To beat a man, you got to beat

1:07:50 >> Yeah. Ric Flair started that, man.

1:07:51 That's

1:07:52 >> I'll be I'll beat the man that beat the

1:07:53 man and be just as happy.

1:07:55 >> Give me one belt. The moment they put

1:07:56 that belt on you, you're the champion.

1:07:58 But fighters have actually believed that

1:08:01 >> Connor it's it's the the the and he's

1:08:05 one of the biggest superstars in the

1:08:06 world. He can't walk into any room

1:08:08 without everybody knowing who he is. So

1:08:10 the access he has,

1:08:12 >> how's he going to look past all of that

1:08:14 to go in to a training camp to fight,

1:08:16 >> right?

1:08:17 >> Especially if he wants to do it right.

1:08:19 >> Francis Enanu um he was in the UFC, he

1:08:22 left. Yeah, it seems to be there's some

1:08:25 speculation that he might be wanting to

1:08:26 come back.

1:08:28 There was this talk about Francis

1:08:30 fighting John.

1:08:30 >> Yep.

1:08:32 >> Would you like to see that fight?

1:08:33 >> I I would have. I would have.

1:08:35 >> Not now.

1:08:37 >> I would now still. Back then I wanted to

1:08:39 because Francis in his last fight

1:08:41 against Sirill uh he his wrestling

1:08:44 looked better.

1:08:45 >> But I do believe that if if he fought

1:08:47 Jon that's a more serviceable fight for

1:08:51 Jon because Jon can wrestle, man.

1:08:52 >> Yes. And he probably would just take

1:08:54 Francis down.

1:08:55 >> Yeah. You don't want to stay toeto toe

1:08:56 with him.

1:08:57 >> No. And dude, do you remember when he

1:08:58 would elbow people in back in the day?

1:08:59 Like

1:09:00 >> he just I think Francis would have have

1:09:02 to knock him out. But Francis could

1:09:04 knock people out, man. I've never seen

1:09:06 anybody hit harder than Franc.

1:09:07 >> Yeah, he got power.

1:09:08 >> He's got the most power seen in my life.

1:09:10 He be knocking dudes. Oh, he hit

1:09:12 Alistister over and his head.

1:09:14 The back of his head touched between his

1:09:16 shoulders. He hit him with an uppercut.

1:09:19 the back of his head touched between his

1:09:21 shoulders as he was falling down.

1:09:23 >> I've never seen anything like it.

1:09:27 >> But Press is boxed because okay, he uh

1:09:30 Tyson Fury and it gave him some

1:09:31 confidence and then he end up fighting

1:09:33 an Anthony Joshua. He got knocked out,

1:09:35 but he made some money. I mean,

1:09:37 >> yep. He's the only one that's actually

1:09:39 done that and it worked out because he

1:09:41 was a heavyweight champ,

1:09:42 >> right?

1:09:42 >> And and Shannon,

1:09:44 >> he looks like the heavyweight champ.

1:09:46 >> Yeah. when he became the champion, I was

1:09:47 like, "Okay, look at him

1:09:49 >> now. You look like you're looking at the

1:09:50 baddest man on the planet."

1:09:52 >> Yes, absolutely.

1:09:52 >> You right. You looking like this dude

1:09:54 Francen Ganu looks like he walk into any

1:09:55 place and you go, "Well, that's a dude

1:09:57 I'm not trying to ain't messing with

1:09:58 you."

1:09:59 >> And he had he had it. So when he moved

1:10:03 over, it worked. He was the heavyweight

1:10:05 champ. Yeah.

1:10:06 >> But [ __ ] he dropped Tyson Fury. Yeah.

1:10:08 >> Remember he knocked him out. I thought

1:10:09 it was over.

1:10:09 >> Yeah,

1:10:10 >> man. You should I exploded out of my

1:10:12 chair.

1:10:12 >> But then Anthony Joshua beat him bad.

1:10:14 Right. And you saw when Joshua dropped

1:10:16 him, the difference in a boxer and a guy

1:10:22 that cuz Francis was like this, he

1:10:25 needed to grab him.

1:10:28 He got flatlined.

1:10:29 >> And the thing is is that boxers

1:10:30 understand how to faint.

1:10:32 >> Yep.

1:10:32 >> And

1:10:33 >> when he gave him that faint, when he

1:10:34 gave him that faint, Francis went

1:10:37 >> boom. I was like, "Oh my god."

1:10:38 >> Yeah. And

1:10:41 boxer, a boxer throwing a punch in MMA.

1:10:43 Look, I understand that, you know, they

1:10:45 both hit hard, but boxers, it's just

1:10:47 something about that punch and where

1:10:48 it's coming from. I mean, it's

1:10:50 >> Shannon, I went train one time in

1:10:52 Oakland when I first started boxing gym.

1:10:55 >> They hit you with a jab and it's like,

1:10:58 what the hell was that?

1:11:00 >> Because they know how to punch.

1:11:02 >> Yeah.

1:11:02 >> And they sit on everything. Yeah. Boom.

1:11:04 >> Boom. It's not jab, jab, touch to try to

1:11:07 take you down.

1:11:07 >> Yeah. Yeah.

1:11:08 >> I'm just mad in there getting my ass

1:11:10 whooped. I'm like, "Yo, I want I can

1:11:12 beat everybody up in here." I'll start

1:11:14 wrestling every one of you fools. They

1:11:17 like pissed off because the dudes just

1:11:19 putting it on you. They just putting it

1:11:21 on you cuz you there's nothing you could

1:11:23 do.

1:11:23 >> Why do you fight Brock Brock Lesnar?

1:11:26 >> The WWE got him. The WWE took him back.

1:11:28 It was That was my golden goose, man. We

1:11:30 had that moment in the ring. I pushed

1:11:32 him. He pushed me. WWE paid him back.

1:11:35 They They were paying Brock like six,

1:11:36 seven million a year, maybe 10,

1:11:38 >> right? You telling me, Brock, you can go

1:11:40 fight DC and lose or you can come.

1:11:44 >> Who say you going to lose?

1:11:45 >> I'm beating Brock Lesnar, man. I was

1:11:47 beating Brock.

1:11:47 >> That was a big dude, man. Safe coach.

1:11:49 >> Don't matter, dog. Shay, I was beating

1:11:52 Brock Lesnar.

1:11:54 >> It was one of the safest fights I could

1:11:55 have had.

1:11:57 I'm telling you, dog. That's the truth.

1:11:58 It's just the truth. I like Brock, too.

1:12:00 He's like, he's a great guy. But

1:12:02 >> I watch what Kane did to him. I watch

1:12:04 how he would react to getting punched,

1:12:06 >> right?

1:12:06 >> And I was going to punch him. He would

1:12:08 have to take me down,

1:12:09 >> right,

1:12:10 >> to win the fight. And I can wrestle.

1:12:12 >> Yeah, but he's not a wrestler. I mean,

1:12:13 he was a wrestler, but he was, but

1:12:15 >> but if he shoots on me, I'm I'mma make

1:12:17 it so hard for him to get that take down

1:12:19 that by the time he gets it.

1:12:20 >> Yeah.

1:12:21 >> He's exhausted. Now I'm up to my feet.

1:12:23 Then you're done. That's why Kane, he

1:12:24 took Kane down. Kane got up, started

1:12:26 kneing him in his face. I saw Brock

1:12:28 recently, he still has that scar under

1:12:30 his eye. Really?

1:12:30 >> From when Kane kne him in the face. Yep.

1:12:32 >> Still got that big scar on his eye.

1:12:34 >> Damn.

1:12:36 It's crazy. It's crazy. Is it true you

1:12:37 got a scholarship to LSU?

1:12:39 >> I I got like offers back then, but I had

1:12:43 bad grades and I just was not going to

1:12:45 college to play football,

1:12:46 >> right?

1:12:46 >> It was hard to

1:12:48 >> It was hard for me in the school that I

1:12:50 was in to

1:12:54 >> First off, there's way too much pressure

1:12:55 on football down there in Louisiana.

1:12:58 Bad.

1:12:58 >> Yeah.

1:13:00 >> And we weren't very good.

1:13:01 >> But I mean, I was the the all state MVP

1:13:04 defensively. I was pretty much missed

1:13:08 everything in football

1:13:09 >> because I was a good little linebacker,

1:13:10 right? But I was small, right? And they

1:13:12 were talking about me playing cornerback

1:13:13 or or free safet safety.

1:13:16 >> I was like, how I'm supposed to tra how

1:13:17 much chase Randy Moss? I mean, you know,

1:13:20 so like I'm not smart,

1:13:22 >> right?

1:13:23 >> I didn't really know the difference

1:13:24 between strong safety is more like a

1:13:26 linebacker.

1:13:27 >> Yes. Yeah.

1:13:28 >> But I was think but I was thinking I'm

1:13:29 going to be chasing dudes like Randy

1:13:31 Moss cuz he was graduating the same

1:13:32 year. I was like

1:13:34 >> there's no way.

1:13:34 >> No, I'm good. Yeah. I was like, I'm g

1:13:36 just go wrestle, man. I'm good. I did. I

1:13:38 I got an offer to go play football.

1:13:41 >> You was in Hershel Walker's Colonel uh

1:13:43 corner. Yes.

1:13:44 >> MMA.

1:13:45 >> Yes.

1:13:46 >> Could Hershel made a career out of that

1:13:47 or he did what he was supposed to do.

1:13:49 Have one fight and move it along.

1:13:51 >> Shannon, I got to tell you, man.

1:13:54 >> Is he Was he really the great? He was

1:13:56 the great He's one of the greatest

1:13:57 athletes, wasn't he?

1:13:57 >> Yeah, he was. Yeah. Shannon, this man

1:14:01 was so strong, but I don't think I've

1:14:04 ever seen anybody like He was very

1:14:06 stiff.

1:14:06 >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He had no

1:14:07 flexibility.

1:14:08 >> Oh, he was even in football.

1:14:09 >> Yeah. He's stiff. Yeah,

1:14:10 >> bro. He was so stiff,

1:14:12 >> but when he hit you Oh, and then he

1:14:16 would like move his feet. He would move

1:14:18 his feet, but they never left the

1:14:20 ground. They never left the ground, bro.

1:14:23 Hersel would be walking towards you like

1:14:25 this. So when this when when this man

1:14:28 would hit you sometime he shock you. You

1:14:31 know how you rub your feet. Yeah.

1:14:33 Sometime H was shocking dudes.

1:14:35 >> Hey. And then we're in the back. I swear

1:14:38 to God it was the most

1:14:40 >> Hershel Walker is a different

1:14:42 individual.

1:14:43 >> Mhm.

1:14:44 >> Hershel Walker has had some stuff in his

1:14:46 life where it's like his anger,

1:14:49 >> but if you meet him, you you met him for

1:14:51 sure.

1:14:51 >> Yeah, for sure.

1:14:54 >> He is the nicest person.

1:14:56 We were all broke back in the day.

1:14:58 Hersha was staying at the

1:14:59 Intercontinental or what was the name of

1:15:02 that hotel?

1:15:03 Downtown San Jose.

1:15:05 >> No, but it was it was called something

1:15:07 else before. It was a nice one. But

1:15:08 Hershel owned a chicken company. You

1:15:10 know, Hersel owns that chicken.

1:15:11 >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

1:15:12 >> One of the biggest ones in the country.

1:15:13 >> Yes, he does.

1:15:15 >> But because of that, they service that

1:15:16 that restaurant down there. So Hershel

1:15:18 got free rooms at this beautiful hotel

1:15:19 downtown San Jose. He would feed us all,

1:15:22 but he wouldn't eat. He would eat one

1:15:25 time a day, bro. He would he would eat

1:15:26 soup and bread and some eggs. So, I'm

1:15:30 like, "Yo, this is the nicest guy ever.

1:15:32 Multi-millionaire, rich, nice football

1:15:34 hall of famer."

1:15:36 We got at the ring

1:15:39 or in the hallway to walk and, bro,

1:15:42 something flipped on him. I said, "This

1:15:44 is this this dude is dark." I was like,

1:15:46 "It's a dark son of a gun, bro." He

1:15:48 started talking to himself, talking

1:15:51 about, "I'm going kill this

1:15:52 motherfucker." They don't do talking

1:15:55 about killing this dude.

1:15:56 >> Wow.

1:15:56 >> He to get himself there,

1:15:58 >> right?

1:15:58 >> He went there.

1:16:00 >> I was like, yo, I've heard people like

1:16:02 talk to himself to hyped himself up.

1:16:04 Hershel was on a whole another level. It

1:16:06 was the most intense thing I've ever

1:16:07 seen in my life. And he went out there

1:16:09 and he won. Wow.

1:16:10 >> He was He was over 40.

1:16:12 >> Yeah.

1:16:12 >> He was over 40. Retired from football

1:16:14 for many, many years. Went in there, did

1:16:16 his thing, and won a US won a fight in

1:16:18 Strike Force, which at the time was the

1:16:20 second biggest organization of all time.

1:16:22 But bro, to see him go to that place,

1:16:24 Shannon.

1:16:24 >> Yeah.

1:16:25 >> You You'd be like, "Yo, this dude is

1:16:26 crazy." I look back at the other dudes.

1:16:29 I was like, "Are y'all seeing this?

1:16:30 Everybody acting normal." Hers was

1:16:32 talking about killing mother.

1:16:34 Hers about killing people.

1:16:36 >> Did you ever think about doing WWE?

1:16:38 >> So, I thought about it right after I was

1:16:40 wrestling, but then it's hard. People

1:16:43 talk about that stuff being fake. Hey,

1:16:45 man. It's scripted.

1:16:46 >> Yeah. But

1:16:48 it hurts.

1:16:49 >> Yeah. Oh, those falls hurt. You fall.

1:16:51 You got to throw your arms back.

1:16:52 >> Yeah.

1:16:53 >> So, every time it's like it's like

1:16:55 slapping against a uh the ring.

1:16:57 >> Yeah.

1:16:58 >> Or when you run the ropes,

1:17:00 >> those robes they burn you. Like it's

1:17:01 it's it's hard, man. And that's why you

1:17:04 see them all break down like that.

1:17:05 >> Yeah.

1:17:06 >> Like they're all like they're all like

1:17:07 messed up. Like their their knees don't

1:17:10 work. They're they're like football

1:17:11 players and us. Y'all got it hard.

1:17:13 Football's hard, man.

1:17:15 >> The the the wear and tear on the body is

1:17:17 >> is crazy. And so is MMA in wrestling.

1:17:20 I'm I'm one of the lucky ones. I feel

1:17:21 like I got out pretty clean,

1:17:22 >> right?

1:17:25 Derrick Lewis.

1:17:26 >> Yeah. Back beast,

1:17:27 >> bro.

1:17:28 He come in there to do one thing. You

1:17:30 already know. He ain't trying to take

1:17:31 you down. He ain't tried to kick you. He

1:17:34 ain't tried to knee you. He ain't trying

1:17:36 to elbow you.

1:17:36 >> Trying to knock you out.

1:17:37 >> He tried to knock you out.

1:17:38 >> The knockout kick.

1:17:39 >> That's it.

1:17:39 >> He got more knockouts than anybody in

1:17:41 the history of the UFC. He hits hard. I

1:17:43 fought him. He hits hard. When he hit

1:17:47 me, I was holding his leg up.

1:17:50 >> Yeah.

1:17:50 >> And he just kind of went like this and

1:17:53 it skimmed down my eye. Next day, I woke

1:17:55 up with a big old black eye.

1:17:57 >> Wow.

1:17:57 >> He kicked me. I had knots all in my my

1:18:00 forearms. He He was But he knocks these

1:18:03 dudes out, man. He knows exactly.

1:18:05 >> Hey yo, did you see him a couple weeks

1:18:07 ago?

1:18:07 >> Mhm.

1:18:08 >> Did you see his poor wife in there, man?

1:18:10 Did you

1:18:12 >> Did you see her? He about to cry if he

1:18:15 didn't you see his wife. She was in

1:18:17 there so embarrassed and the camera pans

1:18:19 to her.

1:18:19 >> Yeah.

1:18:20 >> I'm in there interviewing this man. I'm

1:18:21 like I'm like this dude Derek about to

1:18:23 say some crazy stuff.

1:18:24 >> Yeah.

1:18:24 >> And he go I go what do you who you want

1:18:26 to fight next? Like what do you want

1:18:27 next? He looks over at his wife like

1:18:30 going to be a lot of ground and pound

1:18:31 going. I was like boy. And she got stand

1:18:33 there and try to stay composed knowing

1:18:35 that Derek's out of his mind.

1:18:36 >> But you were the first man to submitted.

1:18:38 >> I did. Yeah. I couldn't wrestle. It was

1:18:41 why I fought him. They called me three

1:18:42 weeks before the fight to to fight him,

1:18:44 right? And uh

1:18:45 >> you like, "Sure."

1:18:46 >> Yeah.

1:18:47 >> Easy money.

1:18:47 >> Yeah. I knew I knew he couldn't wrestle.

1:18:49 So

1:18:50 >> I knew

1:18:52 >> his his uh his cardio.

1:18:53 >> And if if I can extend him, he would get

1:18:55 tired,

1:18:56 >> right?

1:18:56 >> But yeah, just if you couldn't wrestle

1:18:58 like I was fighting you.

1:18:59 >> Yeah. But you got to get I mean you got

1:19:00 to get past those three rounds cuz you

1:19:01 let him get you in the first round.

1:19:03 >> Yeah. He hit you and knock you out. But

1:19:04 I just shot on him right away.

1:19:06 >> Right.

1:19:06 >> Right. because he was so inexperienced

1:19:08 with his wrestling

1:19:09 >> that I like backed him up and just

1:19:11 grabbed his leg.

1:19:12 >> Right.

1:19:12 >> That's one thing I learned fighting the

1:19:14 heavier guys.

1:19:15 >> Yeah.

1:19:15 >> They don't balance well on their feet.

1:19:17 Right.

1:19:17 >> So, I would just kind of move him around

1:19:19 until they fell down.

1:19:20 >> Wow. Learned something new. Who Who's

1:19:23 the hardest puncher?

1:19:24 >> What's the hardest punch you've taken?

1:19:26 Who Who hit you hard?

1:19:27 >> Probably Dan Henderson. That little

1:19:29 dude. He was like he was made of

1:19:31 concrete.

1:19:32 >> Damn.

1:19:32 >> Hendo. He hit so hard. He He hit me on

1:19:36 He was on his back

1:19:38 >> and he hit me and he uh knocked out one

1:19:42 of my bottom teeth. I had to go to like

1:19:44 an emergency dentist.

1:19:45 >> Damn.

1:19:45 >> On Labor Day on Memorial Day after he

1:19:48 hit me from the bottom. He hit hard.

1:19:50 Even from in close, he would just

1:19:54 crazy.

1:19:57 Obviously, there are things that you

1:19:59 can't do, but are there dirty things

1:20:01 that guy, you know, you're not supposed

1:20:03 to eye gouge somebody and you're not

1:20:05 obviously you can't bite, you can't do

1:20:07 certain things, but there's certain

1:20:08 things that guys do that the ref can't

1:20:10 see.

1:20:11 >> I always had a trick where when I would

1:20:12 get on top of them, I would always cover

1:20:14 their mouth. I would literally try to

1:20:17 smother him.

1:20:18 >> Damn, DC.

1:20:19 >> Yeah, I know. Nasty.

1:20:21 >> Dirty.

1:20:21 >> Josh Barnett. That's not dirty. is like

1:20:23 I'm just trying to like Josh Barnett

1:20:26 would like always like kind of if you

1:20:29 let him go behind you his hand was going

1:20:31 like

1:20:32 >> Yeah.

1:20:32 >> Yeah. Yeah. Them dudes they they they do

1:20:34 his life they trying his life or death

1:20:36 out there. Shannon his life out there

1:20:38 you like I saw Hey I fought Josh

1:20:41 Barnett. I was trying to take him down.

1:20:43 He was elbowing me. Boom. Boom. Cut me

1:20:46 wide open here. First fight I ever had a

1:20:48 black eye. He needed me in the eye.

1:20:50 >> Right.

1:20:51 cutting my head open.

1:20:54 When I was a kid, I was playing football

1:20:55 with the older kids. One dude closel

1:20:57 line me, broke my collarbone.

1:20:59 Yeah, it was bad in the dark.

1:21:01 >> I I walked to my mama house cuz I'm

1:21:03 trying to be tough, right? I'm a young

1:21:04 kid. I can't cry. Soon as I saw my mom,

1:21:06 I fall on the ground. They put me in a

1:21:08 cast, broken collarbone.

1:21:10 >> I fought Josh Barnett. My mom passed in

1:21:13 2022.

1:21:15 When

1:21:16 I fought Josh Barnett, I had won my

1:21:20 first big world title, Strike Force.

1:21:24 I was bloodied, man. My eye was open.

1:21:26 Everything was they put stitches for the

1:21:27 first time. I walked into the hotel and

1:21:31 uh I'm good taking pictures, everybody.

1:21:33 Oh, champ. The moment I saw my mama, I

1:21:37 start crying like a baby, man. I felt

1:21:39 I'm in her lap like a seven-year-old kid

1:21:41 again. Please make me feel better.

1:21:44 Right. That's how nasty he was in there,

1:21:46 dude. He was elbowing me. He was

1:21:47 grabbing me. He was doing everything he

1:21:49 could to just like inflict pain on me.

1:21:52 He does that. Jones does that. Certain

1:21:55 guys just no matter where you are,

1:21:57 they're just trying to hurt you,

1:21:59 >> right?

1:21:59 >> And like that's uh Yeah. But you got to

1:22:04 be so wellrounded to do this thing now.

1:22:06 >> Yeah.

1:22:07 >> If you aren't, you're screw. Look at

1:22:08 Ilia.

1:22:10 >> He's a monster.

1:22:11 >> He's a monster. He's like he's he's one

1:22:13 of the best fighters of all time and

1:22:15 he's only fought eight times in the UFC.

1:22:18 >> Wow.

1:22:19 >> He's he's amaz these guys are amazing.

1:22:22 >> What does it feel like to knock someone

1:22:25 out? What does it feel like to get

1:22:26 knocked out? Because you I and I know

1:22:28 exactly what you're saying cuz I've been

1:22:30 knocked out and I can't remember

1:22:31 anything. I don't remember driving to

1:22:33 the stadium. I don't remember what I had

1:22:35 to eat. I don't remember anything. I

1:22:37 just remember looking up at the

1:22:38 scoreboard and asking my teammate Rod

1:22:40 Smith. I was like put we call him putts.

1:22:41 I say foots. How do we get the lead?

1:22:45 >> Cuz I cuz I don't I don't I don't I

1:22:47 don't want to laugh.

1:22:48 >> No, no, but I'm like how do we cuz when

1:22:50 we I I just remember like we were losing

1:22:52 before this happened and now it's the

1:22:54 fourth quarter and I'm like what happens

1:22:57 if we win this game?

1:22:58 >> He said, "Boo, we go to the Super Bowl."

1:23:00 I was like, "Yeah, yeah, we go to the

1:23:01 Super Bowl."

1:23:04 >> But it's a it's a funny feeling

1:23:06 >> to get knocked out because you really

1:23:08 don't remember anything. Hey, my coach

1:23:10 told me that is bad. I'm laughing

1:23:14 because my coach told me. Was that the

1:23:16 last time you asked? You probably asked

1:23:18 him again.

1:23:18 >> No, no, that was I was like,

1:23:19 >> "No, you probably asked him again."

1:23:21 >> I started I was like I started jumping

1:23:22 up and down the side like, "Yeah, we

1:23:25 >> cuz we over at 14 with like 3 minutes to

1:23:27 go and we got the ball." So,

1:23:29 >> this this dude So, I get knocked out,

1:23:31 right?

1:23:33 >> That was John when he kicked

1:23:34 >> when John kicked me and he hit me with

1:23:35 the followup shots, right? Only time I

1:23:36 knocked out

1:23:37 >> I'm crying, right? Yeah.

1:23:39 >> I go to my corner. I ask my coach. I

1:23:41 said, "What happened?"

1:23:43 >> He tells me.

1:23:45 >> I break down crying, right?

1:23:47 >> Yeah.

1:23:49 >> Rogan interviews me. As we're walking

1:23:51 out the octagon, I look to him and I go,

1:23:52 "Hey, what happened?"

1:23:54 He tells me, I break down crying. He

1:23:57 told me I did that seven times. He had

1:24:00 to keep explaining it to me. And then

1:24:02 every time he explained it, I would have

1:24:04 the exact same reaction. Like, it was

1:24:06 the first time I had heard that [ __ ]

1:24:08 man. That's bad. Yo, Jenn, that's bad.

1:24:12 >> He said he told me seven times and then

1:24:14 I'm in the I'm in the ambulance because

1:24:16 they're trying to get me in the

1:24:16 ambulance. I'm I'm refusing.

1:24:18 >> Right.

1:24:18 >> Finally, I get in the ambulance and I

1:24:19 wake up and I was present like nothing

1:24:22 had happened. I was like, I lost.

1:24:26 They're like, "Yeah,

1:24:27 >> yeah,

1:24:28 >> you lost." I was like, "God damn it." I

1:24:32 swear to God I I woke up and I woke up

1:24:34 and and I'm like in realiz like I lost.

1:24:38 >> Did Did you not because obviously So how

1:24:41 did how did he set the head kick up?

1:24:42 >> It was it was it was beautiful. It was

1:24:44 beautiful, man. It was beautiful. He

1:24:47 kept body kicking me. That's what he did

1:24:48 in the first fight, too. And I kept

1:24:50 check. I kept blocking. I kept blocking.

1:24:52 >> But then in the second round, I was

1:24:53 fighting good. First round, real good.

1:24:56 Second round, real good. So now I'm

1:24:58 feeling good because I feel great. My

1:25:00 cardio's great. Yeah.

1:25:01 >> Third round. But the whole time he just

1:25:02 kick me in the body. Third time he tries

1:25:05 to kick me in the head. And the third

1:25:06 round is the first one of the first

1:25:07 attempts and I was like, "Nah."

1:25:09 >> Yeah. Yeah.

1:25:10 >> Nah. But then he actually gave me one

1:25:14 that looked like it was going to the

1:25:15 body.

1:25:16 >> And so I did this and you're supposed to

1:25:19 lean, right? You're supposed to kind of

1:25:21 lean

1:25:22 >> to kind of take some of the impact off.

1:25:24 >> Well, when I lean, he was not going low.

1:25:27 >> He was going high.

1:25:28 >> Caught you.

1:25:29 >> Boom. right on the side of the head. So

1:25:30 then I started doing the chicken dance,

1:25:32 right? Like you know when your legs

1:25:33 >> give Yeah.

1:25:35 >> And this is the this is the this is

1:25:36 where and this is where this is why I

1:25:38 can't stand this dude because somebody

1:25:41 else that's not as good would have let

1:25:43 me off the hook because I was still

1:25:45 there and again that's me football neck

1:25:48 big neck you know short neck can take

1:25:51 most people just fall down from a head

1:25:52 kick like that.

1:25:53 >> I was still there so I'm like doing this

1:25:56 thing running away from him. Yo, he

1:25:59 kicks my leg to spin me.

1:26:02 >> Yes, I remember.

1:26:03 >> So he kicks my leg.

1:26:04 >> Kick your leg out from

1:26:05 >> Yeah. And so I spin. Yeah.

1:26:07 >> It's like that [ __ ] you put the kids

1:26:08 where they go surf.

1:26:10 >> Then you don't know where you're at.

1:26:12 >> When I did that, I fell and that was it.

1:26:15 I could not. My body was gone,

1:26:17 >> right?

1:26:17 >> But like if I was on my feet, I might

1:26:18 have been able to grab him. I might have

1:26:20 been able to hold him. I might have

1:26:21 shot. I would have done something. But

1:26:23 because he's such a great finisher, he

1:26:26 kicks my leg out from under me. So then

1:26:28 I spin and when I spin, I'm like seeing

1:26:30 all these lights and all of a sudden

1:26:32 your body starts falling. It was like a

1:26:34 kid trying to hit a piñata. It was

1:26:36 crazy, man. Then I fall on my stomach of

1:26:39 all times in my world to to fall on my

1:26:41 stomach. Like fall on your back to where

1:26:43 you could see him coming, maybe get my

1:26:46 feet up to try to block him,

1:26:47 >> but instead I fell on my stomach

1:26:49 >> and he jumped on me and started started

1:26:51 finishing. And I I know this from

1:26:53 watching it,

1:26:54 >> right? So So you watching So you watch

1:26:56 when you lost that fight, you watched it

1:26:58 over.

1:26:58 >> Not for a long time. I didn't watch the

1:27:00 fight. I uh But it's on the highlights

1:27:04 and stuff,

1:27:04 >> right?

1:27:05 >> The UFC don't shield us from the If you

1:27:07 lost,

1:27:09 if you lost, you going to see yourself

1:27:11 getting beat at some point,

1:27:12 >> right?

1:27:13 >> That's why when him and Stipe fought, it

1:27:14 was the worst. The whole week, I'm just

1:27:16 out there. I was like, damn, did I ever

1:27:18 win a fight? I was just getting beat the

1:27:19 whole time,

1:27:20 >> right?

1:27:20 >> It was terrible. I mean that that I mean

1:27:23 you like you said I mean his toolbox the

1:27:26 way he can finish a fight with a elbow

1:27:28 he can submit you

1:27:29 >> he elbowed me bad

1:27:30 >> and then that that back that spinning

1:27:32 >> that spinning back kick got

1:27:33 >> he coke steepe perfect

1:27:37 >> poor Steipe man

1:27:38 >> and and you and he and you he doesn't

1:27:39 telegraph it

1:27:40 >> well the box the heavyweights are boxing

1:27:42 or wrestling they're not doing all that

1:27:44 right

1:27:44 >> you could tell right away when he needs

1:27:45 steep steep was like what is this

1:27:47 >> yeah what

1:27:48 >> they're they're kneeing now normally A

1:27:51 guyy's trying to either take me out or

1:27:52 box with me, maybe a couple leg kicks

1:27:54 here and there.

1:27:55 >> John was hitting him with all kinds of

1:27:56 stuff.

1:27:57 >> John hit him with knees, elbows,

1:27:59 spinning kicks.

1:28:00 >> When he hit him with that spinning kick,

1:28:02 >> Steipe, you could tell Stipe looked like

1:28:04 a guy that hadn't fought for three and a

1:28:06 half years and was 42.

1:28:08 >> He looked and he turned on you. I was

1:28:09 like, "Oh, John got him."

1:28:11 >> But he is very good at setting

1:28:13 everything up. That's why he didn't have

1:28:15 to cheat. He did not have to cheat.

1:28:18 That's where my biggest issue is. Like,

1:28:21 you don't need a cheat. You got all

1:28:22 that.

1:28:23 >> Keep that. Like, use what you have.

1:28:26 >> And he always get mad at me. He he going

1:28:28 to be on me now. If it is, oh, I live I

1:28:31 live. The other day he say he live rent

1:28:32 free in my house in my my brain or

1:28:34 something like that. I'm like, man, shut

1:28:36 up. I care about you.

1:28:40 >> Obviously, you were there when Anderson

1:28:42 Silva was that uh Rockhole or was that

1:28:45 uh uh what

1:28:46 >> Chunning?

1:28:47 >> No. when he checked him when when

1:28:49 >> Oh, that was Chris Weidman.

1:28:50 >> Weidman.

1:28:51 >> Had you ever seen Have you ever seen

1:28:53 that before?

1:28:54 >> I

1:28:56 >> cuz it happened again. Another fighter

1:28:58 got checked.

1:28:58 >> Hey, Chris Weidman checked Anderson's

1:29:01 broke his leg.

1:29:01 >> Yeah.

1:29:02 >> Then Chris Weidman kicked somebody

1:29:03 else's leg.

1:29:05 >> Weidman kicked a guy named Uriah Hall.

1:29:07 Broke his leg. So the same thing that

1:29:09 happened to Anderson, Chris did to

1:29:11 himself. I can't watch it. Did you watch

1:29:13 it?

1:29:13 >> I watched it. Can you actually watch the

1:29:16 I can't. It looked like his his leg.

1:29:17 >> Yeah. It like broke half. Yeah.

1:29:19 >> You watched it. I can't watch it. Even

1:29:21 next to the Oct.

1:29:22 >> But I I watched it. I I was watching it

1:29:24 live at the time.

1:29:25 >> But all those replays I was like, how

1:29:26 did it look?

1:29:27 >> Cuz cuz when you see it, you're like,

1:29:30 >> damn, that look and then you like you

1:29:33 try to, you know, you know, you try to

1:29:35 put, you know, try to balance yourself

1:29:37 and you just like damn

1:29:38 >> looked like his leg broke.

1:29:40 >> Yes,

1:29:40 >> dude. I had to ask Rogan in the attic.

1:29:42 I'm like I'm like, did it break? Did it

1:29:43 break? Did it break? They're like, "Oh,

1:29:44 it broke." They was like, "Do not watch

1:29:46 it." I was going to throw up.

1:29:48 >> I mean, cuz you guys know how to how to

1:29:51 check because it's called, you know, you

1:29:52 check you like

1:29:53 >> you check the kick. Yeah. You put you

1:29:55 either lean into it or you pick your uh

1:29:57 you pick your your your knee up,

1:29:59 >> right?

1:30:00 >> And what they were doing were kicking on

1:30:01 the inside. That's why when you kick on

1:30:04 the inside, they just turn their knee

1:30:05 in. And that if you kick too hard, man,

1:30:07 you break your leg.

1:30:09 >> That's why I don't kick too much.

1:30:12 Hey, that's why I was out there boxing

1:30:14 just like everybody else.

1:30:15 >> What's the worst injury you sustained in

1:30:17 a fight?

1:30:19 >> Um, in a fight

1:30:22 just more damage like facial stuff like

1:30:24 black eye, cut face. I never got hurt

1:30:28 really bad in fights, but in training,

1:30:30 ribs, torn ACL,

1:30:33 uh torn ACL, ribs. I I tore some sort of

1:30:37 a this this ligament in my shin one time

1:30:40 kicking.

1:30:41 >> Uh broke broken hand. Like I I couldn't

1:30:45 I couldn't punch. I didn't know how to

1:30:46 punch. Like remember they used to have

1:30:48 this idea that Floyd had like trail

1:30:50 hands?

1:30:51 >> Yes.

1:30:51 >> That was me. Like I broke my hand five

1:30:53 times when I started fighting.

1:30:55 >> Wow. Every time I would land right, I

1:30:58 would I would break my hand. So then I

1:30:59 have a doctor call him. He did a great

1:31:01 job with my uh with this and it never

1:31:04 broke again. He put a plate with like

1:31:06 eight screws because it just kept

1:31:08 breaking. But when knocking someone out,

1:31:11 you don't feel nothing. You literally

1:31:14 don't feel anything if you knock them

1:31:15 out with a punch.

1:31:16 >> Yeah.

1:31:17 >> It's like sometimes you feel and it's

1:31:19 like that loud impact.

1:31:20 >> Yeah. When you land the right way,

1:31:23 sometimes it's like you don't even punch

1:31:25 them. It's like you go right through

1:31:26 them,

1:31:27 >> but you know it.

1:31:28 >> Well, they fall. They fall. When I hit

1:31:31 Stipe with that one that put him down to

1:31:32 become the double champ,

1:31:34 >> I had just I had thrown that punch so

1:31:36 many times

1:31:37 >> and it just so happened to hit him and

1:31:40 he went down. I could I I didn't even

1:31:42 feel nothing.

1:31:43 >> Yeah. Like when Usman caught uh the dude

1:31:46 >> George Naz.

1:31:47 >> Yeah. Jose Maz. Yeah. when he caught him

1:31:50 with

1:31:51 >> his his chin went all the way.

1:31:52 >> I was like, "Oh my goodness."

1:31:54 >> Model was mad at me one time because I

1:31:56 they should I was on I was on NFL live

1:32:00 and I said, "Uh, when the mug when you

1:32:02 when you

1:32:04 >> you called him?"

1:32:04 >> Yeah, I put him in put him in the

1:32:06 concussion protocol. He got to go in the

1:32:08 tent because his chin went all the way

1:32:11 back there.

1:32:11 >> Yeah.

1:32:12 >> He went down bad. That was Kamaru

1:32:15 punched through him and he just

1:32:16 crumbled.

1:32:17 >> Yeah,

1:32:17 >> it was nasty.

1:32:19 Camaro looked good coming back. Let me

1:32:21 ask you this. When you saw Anderson

1:32:22 Silva, he could box box a little bit,

1:32:25 but he fought Jake Paul.

1:32:26 >> See, that's I have a problem with all

1:32:27 that. I don't know how y'all I don't

1:32:29 know how you guys feel about the the

1:32:31 Jake Paul Anderson. The Jake Paul

1:32:33 >> I was see boxers

1:32:35 >> boxers that's his age.

1:32:37 >> Yes, Mike.

1:32:38 >> I don't think that's asking too much.

1:32:39 >> No, Mike Tyson.

1:32:40 >> Yeah, Mike Tyson's

1:32:41 >> He beat up on Mike. Mike's 60, man. Mike

1:32:43 did make like 27 mill so I get it. Yeah.

1:32:47 >> 60 years old.

1:32:48 >> I want Jake Paul to fight guys that

1:32:51 >> he says he wants to fight Canelo.

1:32:53 >> Canelo fights 154 or 160.

1:32:57 >> That's one of his best weights. He'll

1:32:59 fight heavier cur. He fought he fought

1:33:01 the guy at uh 175.

1:33:02 >> Yeah. And got beat. Yeah. But like it's

1:33:06 like

1:33:07 >> fight Jake weighs 200 210 215.

1:33:11 >> Yeah. But I mean so that means he'd be a

1:33:12 heavyweight.

1:33:13 >> Yeah. Yeah, he's like a heavyweight

1:33:14 >> now. And he talking about he he says he

1:33:16 wants to fight Anthony Joshua

1:33:17 >> that he's if he fights Anthony Joshua

1:33:20 all everybody's wish and dream of him

1:33:23 getting finished will come to fruition.

1:33:25 >> But I I think the thing is is that

1:33:27 >> he's better now.

1:33:28 >> Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You No,

1:33:29 he takes it serious. You can you can

1:33:31 appre you can appreciate that. You can

1:33:34 tell that he spends time in the gym. You

1:33:35 tell that he has serious coaches and

1:33:37 he's taking this craft serious. He ain't

1:33:39 just getting in there and people like,

1:33:40 "Oh, he's just

1:33:41 >> he's a YouTuber." No, he ain't. He's a

1:33:43 boxer.

1:33:43 >> No, no, no, no, no, no.

1:33:45 >> So Jake Paul's a millionaire.

1:33:47 >> Yeah.

1:33:47 >> Jake Paul's not training at the local

1:33:49 YMCA. No,

1:33:50 >> he's got real coaches on staff. He got

1:33:52 real coach.

1:33:52 >> He's got high level coaches and he lives

1:33:55 to box now.

1:33:56 >> Yes.

1:33:56 >> He's been boxing seriously now. So, he

1:33:58 should be able to compete.

1:33:59 >> Yes.

1:33:59 >> He's a boxer. He's not He's not that

1:34:01 same kid. That's why I keep telling

1:34:02 those MMA guys, every time they tell me,

1:34:04 "I got a chance to fight uh Jake Paul."

1:34:07 I'm like, "Man, don't do it." Because

1:34:10 >> he he boxed. That's what he does. He's a

1:34:11 boxer. You don't know how to box. Like

1:34:13 my friend Ben Astrin.

1:34:14 >> Yeah.

1:34:15 >> Ben went fought him. Ben should have

1:34:16 never fought him.

1:34:17 >> Yeah. No.

1:34:18 >> Cuz he was going to get Ben never could

1:34:20 wrestle. He could never box.

1:34:21 >> No.

1:34:22 >> He is a wrestler. Tyron Woodley. I was

1:34:25 so sad when Tyron Woodley kept losing to

1:34:26 him. I love T Wood man. And I was like T

1:34:29 Wood like

1:34:29 >> Well, you don't see the butt that look.

1:34:31 You don't see them punches, bro. You not

1:34:33 That's not what you

1:34:34 >> That's not what we do. I can't box these

1:34:36 guys. No. He tried to Jake Paul tried to

1:34:38 uh mess with me for a while until I went

1:34:41 up to him in Orlando. I said, "I don't

1:34:43 play like these kids." I said, "Stop

1:34:45 playing with me." His bodyguard. I said,

1:34:46 "I'm going to slap you, too." I said, "I

1:34:50 don't play like that, man. Don't leave

1:34:51 me alone." I swear to God, I was at the

1:34:54 commentary desk.

1:34:55 >> Yeah.

1:34:56 >> I'm sitting there. He in the back making

1:34:58 faces at me. I took my handset off. I

1:35:01 put it down. I got up, walked right to

1:35:03 where he was in the stands. I point

1:35:06 right in his face. I said, "Man, I don't

1:35:07 play. Leave me alone." I said, "I'm not

1:35:09 the children that you messing around

1:35:10 with. I'm not going to play with you.

1:35:12 Leave me alone." His bodyguard, "I ain't

1:35:14 going to do nothing." I said, "I'm going

1:35:16 to slap the [ __ ] out of you, too." Both

1:35:18 of y'all can get it. [ __ ] out. The

1:35:20 security act security UFC security can't

1:35:21 get me. Yeah,

1:35:22 >> cuz you know, man, come on. We growing

1:35:23 up, man. We don't like I'm not playing.

1:35:25 >> Everybody don't play like that.

1:35:26 >> No, man. Leave me alone. Unless you

1:35:27 really want to fight. Jon Jones, I

1:35:29 respect cuz he fights me,

1:35:30 >> right?

1:35:31 >> But Leave me alone. Don't I'm not

1:35:32 playing those childish games,

1:35:34 >> right?

1:35:34 >> Yeah. Leave me alone.

1:35:36 Do you think you see the guys in MMA go

1:35:38 to fight, go to box

1:35:40 >> for the money?

1:35:41 >> For the money.

1:35:41 >> They do it for the money. They Look,

1:35:43 man.

1:35:44 >> Can you blame them though?

1:35:45 >> No. No. No. There's only a select few

1:35:48 people that make the big money in the

1:35:49 UFC.

1:35:50 >> Correct.

1:35:50 >> It's the God honest truth. I mean,

1:35:53 >> champions make money.

1:35:54 >> Yes.

1:35:54 >> Lorenzo Fertito was the best. When

1:35:56 Lorenzo Fertito was there, he would do

1:35:58 these discretionary bonuses.

1:36:00 >> Yeah.

1:36:01 >> Where they would just give you money. He

1:36:03 had an idea of what he wanted the

1:36:04 champion to make and he would make sure

1:36:06 he got it right.

1:36:06 >> So when I fought Jon Jones, my contract

1:36:08 was $85,000.

1:36:10 >> I lost the first time.

1:36:12 >> On Monday, Dana called me and goes, "You

1:36:14 did a great job. We're going to send you

1:36:15 a check for a million dollars." What?

1:36:18 >> Swear to God.

1:36:19 >> 85. And then you got

1:36:20 >> He gave me a million dollars. They gave

1:36:21 me a million dollars. A check from first

1:36:24 time ever made that obviously as a

1:36:26 wrestler. It was the first time I'd ever

1:36:27 made seven figures. They called me and

1:36:29 said, "You did a great job. Here you

1:36:31 go." Then I fought again a few months

1:36:34 later and I had got a new contract,

1:36:37 right? And it might have been 300,000

1:36:39 and then we sold a few hundred,000

1:36:40 pay-per-views and

1:36:42 they called me and said, "Hey, we're

1:36:43 going to give you x amount of dollars to

1:36:45 get you back to a million dollars."

1:36:48 >> Wow.

1:36:49 >> They would do that, man. They were like,

1:36:51 because that's what people don't

1:36:52 understand. Like I know they talk, well

1:36:54 this guy these guys are underpaid, but

1:36:56 it's like when you become a champion and

1:37:01 then you're benefiting the business,

1:37:03 >> right?

1:37:03 >> They they take care of you.

1:37:04 >> Yeah.

1:37:04 >> And but even even the lowest boxers make

1:37:08 are so low, bro.

1:37:09 >> Yeah.

1:37:09 >> Like the low

1:37:10 >> that makes that make it seem like

1:37:11 everybody making Floyd Mayweather money.

1:37:13 And they're not.

1:37:14 >> They are not all making that money, bro.

1:37:15 They're making thousands,

1:37:17 >> right? I mean, they make good look. They

1:37:18 like But like you said,

1:37:20 >> but the good guys will make good money.

1:37:21 Yeah. What does a guy make that? So

1:37:24 >> Tank and all them dudes are getting paid

1:37:25 right now. They're in the millions.

1:37:27 >> Yeah.

1:37:27 >> But they're they're the equivalent of

1:37:30 the Iliotas,

1:37:31 >> right?

1:37:32 >> And the Israel Adosas. They're they're

1:37:34 those guys,

1:37:35 >> right?

1:37:35 >> But as you go down

1:37:38 >> as you go down the card and you go down

1:37:41 the pay scale.

1:37:42 >> Yeah.

1:37:43 >> I bet it's all pretty equivalent or very

1:37:45 equal.

1:37:46 >> So yeah, people talk like all boxers

1:37:49 make money. They don't.

1:37:52 You work for the company now and in the

1:37:54 commentary,

1:37:55 >> but how is it negotiating with Dana as a

1:37:57 fighter

1:37:58 >> or do you did you negotiate managers?

1:38:00 You had managers.

1:38:01 >> I have managers, but I was always I was

1:38:04 always really good about that.

1:38:07 >> I would stand on what I believed, you

1:38:09 know. One time I got he he was he was

1:38:11 like, "That didn't happen." I was like,

1:38:13 "But it did, boss." I was like, "Of

1:38:14 course it did, boss." I said, "Uh, you

1:38:18 you we were negotiating my contract when

1:38:20 I first came over and I wanted like a

1:38:21 certain amount of money." Didn't want to

1:38:23 do it. Dana was like kind of throwing a

1:38:25 fit. Lorenzo goes, "It's fine. We'll

1:38:27 figure it out." And by the time I got to

1:38:29 the airport, it was figured out.

1:38:30 >> Right.

1:38:31 >> Right. And he was like, "That didn't

1:38:32 happen." I was like, "It did." I was

1:38:33 like, "It's not a big deal because I

1:38:34 understand you have to protect your

1:38:35 business, right?

1:38:36 >> And I have to protect myself as a

1:38:38 business because I have a small window

1:38:39 to happen." But then when I was

1:38:41 retiring, right, Hunter Campbell, who

1:38:44 now does a lot of the stuff with the

1:38:46 guys, he calls my manager and he goes,

1:38:48 "So guys, what do you think? Uh, same as

1:38:51 he made as champ plus pay-per-view."

1:38:53 Like, "Yeah, even though I wasn't a

1:38:55 champ, they still gave me the same pay I

1:38:57 made as a champion

1:38:58 >> and the pay-per-view."

1:39:00 So, it's like I I have nothing negative

1:39:03 to say because I've had all great

1:39:04 experience.

1:39:04 >> You had great experience with it.

1:39:05 >> The worst experience I had was that,

1:39:07 >> right,

1:39:07 >> when he said, "I don't want to give you

1:39:08 that." And I was like, "Well, okay, then

1:39:11 I'll just fight and then I won't have a

1:39:13 contract,

1:39:14 >> right?

1:39:14 >> And then we can negotiate after that."

1:39:16 And they're like, "Uh-uh. We ain't doing

1:39:17 that. We ain't we ain't going to let you

1:39:19 get to Francis,

1:39:20 >> right?

1:39:21 >> We ain't letting you get to undefeated,

1:39:22 >> right?

1:39:23 >> Heavyweight or light heavyweight with no

1:39:25 contract where other people can start

1:39:27 going, "Hey, we want you."

1:39:28 >> Right.

1:39:28 >> Right. So then eventually I just resign

1:39:30 with the company.

1:39:31 >> If Dana were to ever stepped down, would

1:39:33 you run the UFC?

1:39:34 >> That would be a dream job for anybody.

1:39:36 But of course, I would love to do

1:39:38 something if if they ever if they ever

1:39:40 trusted me with that, I would do the

1:39:43 best job I ever could do because it's

1:39:46 one of the greatest organizations in the

1:39:48 world. It's one of the biggest sports

1:39:49 organizations in the world. Yep.

1:39:50 >> And they've done such a great job of

1:39:52 building it that

1:39:55 >> the job itself is just don't don't [ __ ]

1:39:58 it up.

1:39:58 >> Don't mess it up.

1:39:59 >> Don't mess it up.

1:40:00 >> Right.

1:40:00 >> Cuz Dana does what he does is he's so

1:40:02 passionate about it.

1:40:03 >> Yeah, he is.

1:40:04 >> That I can't imagine the UFC without

1:40:05 him. But if not,

1:40:07 >> but D stand on business now.

1:40:08 >> He stand on business.

1:40:10 >> You could be his best friend. He going

1:40:11 to get you. He going to put He going to

1:40:12 walk you out the door and say, "Hey,

1:40:14 man. Give me a little Give me another

1:40:14 little get that a little bit. I'm

1:40:16 running out. You can give me a little

1:40:18 small pour right there." Yeah. Hit me

1:40:19 up. Yeah, that's good. Let me get that.

1:40:22 That's pretty good, man.

1:40:23 >> Oh, it's great.

1:40:24 >> I'm taking that bottle.

1:40:25 >> You can take it?

1:40:26 >> That's coming with me.

1:40:26 >> No, but we we'll get your address. We'll

1:40:28 send you send them to your dad.

1:40:31 >> My passed away, but

1:40:32 >> Oh, my bad. I'm sorry to hear that.

1:40:34 >> It's okay. But we make sure we make sure

1:40:35 you take care of.

1:40:36 >> Yeah, you take I'm then I will drink it

1:40:39 in his honor. I'mma do exactly like him.

1:40:41 My pops show home. Yeah.

1:40:43 >> My pops had them hard days, man. My pops

1:40:46 was working hard.

1:40:46 >> Well, if you Louisiana, he grew up hard.

1:40:48 >> Grew hard and working outside. My dad

1:40:50 used to show up,

1:40:52 >> sit in that truck for two hours

1:40:54 >> because he knew hard at work got to come

1:40:56 deal with us.

1:40:57 >> Yeah, it was.

1:40:58 >> Yeah. He probably had to have couple of

1:41:00 drinks to come in the house.

1:41:01 >> Yes, he did. Yes, he did. Joe Rogan.

1:41:05 Now, I didn't know a whole lot about Joe

1:41:07 Rogan. I just knew him as the guy that

1:41:08 Fear Factor. So, I didn't know that

1:41:10 >> he became Joe Rogan.

1:41:12 >> Yeah. Cuz that's I mean cuz I love Fear

1:41:14 Factor and then they just got too they

1:41:15 just got too ridiculous with it. Me, I

1:41:17 like I can't do this no more. Um it I

1:41:19 mean it was really good. The first

1:41:20 couple of seasons was really really

1:41:21 good. And to see what he's turned into

1:41:23 as a podcaster, but in the MMA in UFC,

1:41:29 he's your Howard Coale.

1:41:30 >> Yes, he is. He's he's he's very good.

1:41:32 He's I mean he is very very good.

1:41:35 >> I've never met a person that actually

1:41:37 remembers more than Rogan. We we go to

1:41:40 dinner after the fights.

1:41:41 >> Yeah.

1:41:42 >> And uh he'll be talking about events at

1:41:46 UFC 15 and I'm like UFC 15. Was that in

1:41:50 2004?

1:41:51 >> Bro, we at we at 300 now. You talking

1:41:53 about 15?

1:41:54 >> Yeah. He's like I'm telling you like

1:41:56 this but his memory to recall all these

1:41:59 things and I've never seen anything like

1:42:01 it.

1:42:01 >> Right. But yeah, and and and Shannon, it

1:42:04 says something when you do a job just

1:42:06 for the love of doing the job when you

1:42:08 don't have to do it,

1:42:09 >> right?

1:42:10 >> Joe doesn't have to do UFC.

1:42:11 >> No, he don't.

1:42:12 >> With the Spotify thing that he has going

1:42:14 on and everything.

1:42:15 >> And Dana said that when he first started

1:42:16 doing it, he did it for free.

1:42:18 >> Yeah. He love

1:42:19 >> He called He called the fight for free.

1:42:21 like and you know then they worked it

1:42:22 out something later but to just because

1:42:25 he loved the sport so much

1:42:27 >> and and you know he he fights and

1:42:29 obviously you know he you know he works

1:42:30 at it and uh uh but he does an

1:42:33 unbelievable job.

1:42:34 >> Yeah, he's tremendous man. I I think he

1:42:35 does a great job of calling the fights

1:42:37 and

1:42:39 I think that he

1:42:41 >> and you could tell his passion for it.

1:42:43 >> Yes.

1:42:44 >> And everything. I mean you guys do so

1:42:46 you guys do like I mean hours and hours

1:42:49 of TV a week. Mhm.

1:42:50 >> You got to love this, too, or you can't

1:42:53 do it. Yeah. And you can feel it. I can

1:42:55 see it in you, too.

1:42:56 >> I've watched you from afar.

1:42:57 >> Yeah.

1:42:57 >> And I've admired how well you've done

1:42:59 and how you've really broke, you've

1:43:01 really broke through the glass ceiling

1:43:03 >> because there was

1:43:04 >> there was an idea of who you were

1:43:05 supposed to be at Fox.

1:43:07 >> Yeah.

1:43:07 >> And then eventually you said, "This idea

1:43:09 is not it doesn't work for me."

1:43:11 >> Right.

1:43:11 >> And you became bigger than that idea.

1:43:13 And now it's like so I'm so happy. I

1:43:16 don't really know you well enough to say

1:43:17 I'm proud of you, but I'm happy for what

1:43:19 you've done and what you've accomplished

1:43:20 because you deserve it, man. Hard work

1:43:22 deserves to get uh credit for it. And

1:43:24 >> I appreciate that.

1:43:25 >> Yeah.

1:43:26 >> Let me ask you this. What have you most

1:43:28 learned about money? Cuz growing up, how

1:43:30 you grew up?

1:43:31 >> Um you know, living off 1,500 bucks a

1:43:34 month and you got a $1,200 rent and then

1:43:36 basically I got to eat for uh the next

1:43:38 29 days I got to live off 150 bucks. Now

1:43:41 that you have you make decent money.

1:43:43 >> Yep. What have you learned about it?

1:43:46 >> Money's hard to keep. Money is very hard

1:43:48 to keep. That's what people don't

1:43:49 understand. Money's hard to keep. You

1:43:51 pay a lot. You pay a lot of taxes. You

1:43:53 pay a lot of other things. It just gives

1:43:55 you an opportunity. I feel like money

1:43:57 gives you the ability. One, you're going

1:43:59 to be exactly who you ever wanted to be.

1:44:01 >> Yes.

1:44:01 >> So, if a person's ugly because they have

1:44:03 money, they always were ugly. They just

1:44:05 didn't have the ability to be ugly.

1:44:08 >> Um, you're gonna be exactly who you want

1:44:10 to be and you have access to more things

1:44:12 that you have. And I also learned that

1:44:14 because you have the ability to pay for

1:44:16 stuff, most things are free.

1:44:17 >> Yes.

1:44:17 >> Isn't that the craziest thing?

1:44:18 >> That's the crazy thing. People have the

1:44:20 most money, they get the most stuff for

1:44:21 free.

1:44:22 >> When you were living off that 1,500, you

1:44:24 want to go buy, you want something, you

1:44:26 got to pay for it. But when you have the

1:44:27 money that you have and you can pay for

1:44:30 it, everybody's like, "Could you please

1:44:31 just take this and I just want to see

1:44:33 you have it? Hold it. Shannon, could you

1:44:35 just hold it?"

1:44:36 >> Right.

1:44:36 >> And you're like, "Okay."

1:44:38 >> And most times you're like, "I'd rather

1:44:39 pay for it instead of hold it for you."

1:44:41 Like it's like it's just it's just that

1:44:43 but also just that it gives you a free

1:44:45 it's it's it's freedom. It really is

1:44:47 just freedom. Like

1:44:49 >> it's it's the freedom to to do things

1:44:51 and take care of the people that you

1:44:53 love more than anything. I bought my mom

1:44:55 a house.

1:44:55 >> Wow.

1:44:56 >> That was one of my greatest

1:44:57 accomplishments.

1:44:58 >> Yes.

1:44:58 >> To have her

1:45:01 >> get a big house. Right. And then my mom

1:45:04 was a house cleaner whenever I was

1:45:06 growing up. So she would take us to

1:45:07 these people's houses

1:45:09 >> and while she worked uh the people were

1:45:11 beautiful. One family I still remember

1:45:13 to this day called the Low family in

1:45:15 Louisiana, Lafayette.

1:45:16 >> She'd go Monday and Wednesday there.

1:45:18 They gave us a car. They gave us like a

1:45:20 brand new car. Just this wonderful

1:45:22 family of people. I had I made sure she

1:45:25 had house cleaners when she was older.

1:45:27 >> Wow.

1:45:28 >> So instead of going to clean people's

1:45:29 houses like those are the things that

1:45:31 I'm so proud of in my life, in my career

1:45:33 >> that you were able to do for your mom

1:45:34 >> to do for your mom. I mean, you know

1:45:36 that you do.

1:45:37 >> Absolutely.

1:45:37 >> It's like there are people in your life

1:45:38 that mean more than anything and that's

1:45:41 uh you take care of them.

1:45:45 >> Finding a mate

1:45:47 >> obviously wrestling, you know, ain't it

1:45:49 like they coming to L like they beat and

1:45:51 down your door say, "Oh yeah, I want I I

1:45:53 want to wrestle cuz it's not like you

1:45:55 know, you're not on television. It's

1:45:56 it's a hard job. It's a grimy job. Uh

1:45:59 you're moody. Some days are better than

1:46:01 others." When you found a wife, how did

1:46:05 you know?

1:46:05 >> I've had multiple. Oh, so yeah, you

1:46:08 can't you can't really I'm not the best

1:46:09 in love.

1:46:11 >> You know what I and and and and I tell

1:46:13 someone was telling me this the other

1:46:14 day. They said, "Shannon, the best and

1:46:16 worst decision." When you made the best

1:46:18 decision, did you know it was the best

1:46:19 decision at the time? No.

1:46:21 >> No.

1:46:21 >> When you made the worst decision, did

1:46:23 you know it was the worst decision at

1:46:24 the time? No.

1:46:25 >> No. You just live with the decisions you

1:46:27 make. That's all you can really do. But

1:46:30 you uh

1:46:34 part of being great is being selfish.

1:46:37 >> You got to be.

1:46:37 >> And when you're so selfish, it's hard

1:46:39 for relationships to work.

1:46:40 >> Absolutely.

1:46:41 >> And I think that is like probably the

1:46:43 thing that athletes need to worry about

1:46:44 the most because

1:46:46 >> got to find somebody that understands

1:46:47 it.

1:46:48 >> Yes. And not many people do.

1:46:49 >> They don't.

1:46:49 >> It's really hard.

1:46:50 >> Everybody say they can be, oh, I

1:46:52 understand. Everybody can be second

1:46:54 until they actually have to be second

1:46:55 >> until also until everybody can be second

1:46:59 when they don't have.

1:47:01 The moment there's a comfortability to

1:47:03 life,

1:47:04 >> it's like, wait a minute, everything

1:47:06 that we hoped would happen has now

1:47:09 happened.

1:47:10 >> Now worry about, but it's not done yet.

1:47:13 The job's never done.

1:47:14 >> No. I feel like for high thinkers like

1:47:17 you and myself

1:47:20 to just retire,

1:47:22 could you imagine that as life?

1:47:24 >> You die. Some a part of you would die.

1:47:27 >> Yes.

1:47:28 >> And so for me it's like I need to be

1:47:29 chasing career. I need to be

1:47:31 >> I got to work.

1:47:32 >> I'm a worker.

1:47:33 >> Got to work. It's what I was put on this

1:47:34 earth to do.

1:47:35 >> But that can be seen as selfish.

1:47:37 >> It is.

1:47:38 >> Yeah.

1:47:38 >> And but that's the

1:47:41 that's the only way you can become

1:47:42 great. It's the only way

1:47:44 >> there there. And and and greatness is

1:47:46 not a sometime thing.

1:47:48 >> It's an all the time thing.

1:47:49 >> It's an all the time thing. You don't

1:47:51 get to be great just when you want to be

1:47:52 great in front of people.

1:47:54 >> You got to be willing to do that work

1:47:55 behind closed doors.

1:47:57 >> Yeah. But you don't never know anything.

1:48:00 >> Your biological father was shot and

1:48:01 killed by his second wife's

1:48:03 >> Yep. Yep.

1:48:04 >> father in self-defense.

1:48:06 >> Dude,

1:48:07 >> you remember that? Oh,

1:48:10 >> yeah. I remember

1:48:13 I remember uh

1:48:15 watching Thanksgiving Day of 1986.

1:48:21 We're at my aunt's house, Marjorie.

1:48:23 >> Mhm.

1:48:23 >> We're all sitting down. We ate. We're

1:48:25 all watching The Color Purple. And uh my

1:48:29 mom getting a call and she goes crazy.

1:48:31 It was hysterical.

1:48:34 I was a seven-year-old kid. I had no

1:48:36 idea what was going on.

1:48:39 my uh then they told her your dad's just

1:48:42 been killed.

1:48:44 Your you know Joseph has just been

1:48:46 killed. Your ex has been killed.

1:48:47 >> She goes crazy.

1:48:49 >> She has to sit down now and tell me that

1:48:51 my older brother is 12 years older than

1:48:53 me. Imagine a 19year-old kid learning

1:48:56 that his father's been killed.

1:48:57 >> I'm at seven just

1:49:00 crying because I don't have the greatest

1:49:01 memories. I don't have the I don't have

1:49:03 the memories of my dad

1:49:05 >> like the night like your brother does.

1:49:07 >> Like my brother does. But I also don't

1:49:09 have like Shannon, I can retain one real

1:49:12 vivid memory of my father.

1:49:14 >> Okay?

1:49:14 >> And that was we were at a truck stop

1:49:16 because he drove trucks. That's it.

1:49:18 >> That's the only real vivid memory I have

1:49:19 of my father.

1:49:21 >> But

1:49:23 my dad Percy has had already moved into

1:49:27 my life when I was three. Right.

1:49:29 >> So I'm four years into that relationship

1:49:31 with my mother.

1:49:31 >> Right.

1:49:32 >> And it was just sad, man. I remember

1:49:34 going to that funeral and

1:49:37 I see my dad in that casket. He's got

1:49:39 two families, right? Because while

1:49:42 my mom is not with him anymore, they

1:49:46 have kids.

1:49:47 >> Her reaction told me that she still

1:49:48 loved your dad.

1:49:49 >> I don't think they ever fall out of

1:49:50 love. It's like something that they

1:49:53 don't really let go of, especially that

1:49:56 first one. Mhm.

1:49:57 >> Um, but my mom's sitting there with my

1:50:00 dad and let me tell you, you I I knew my

1:50:02 mom still loved my dad. One time, I

1:50:05 don't know if my dad I don't quite

1:50:07 understand if my dad was cheating. I

1:50:09 don't know what it was, Shannon, but my

1:50:11 mom took the car at a four-way stop. The

1:50:14 other woman was driving the other car.

1:50:17 She hit her. What? She hit her. My mom

1:50:21 was an angel. You better hold You

1:50:23 better. My mom was an angel. Your mama

1:50:25 play

1:50:26 >> was an agent. She play

1:50:27 >> she play buba cars in real cars though.

1:50:29 >> Cop said why'd you hit her? She goes

1:50:31 that's my car too.

1:50:33 >> This my car. That's my car. I want a

1:50:35 record. I can record. I said oh my god.

1:50:39 She said but it was a little red light.

1:50:41 It was a bump.

1:50:42 >> Yeah.

1:50:42 >> But it wasn't like a hard hit but she

1:50:44 like she hit her.

1:50:46 >> But yes. But yes. So yes. She must have

1:50:48 still loved my dad. But yeah it was it

1:50:51 was it was awful. You mentioned that

1:50:54 >> your stepfather intervene came in your

1:50:56 life at a very young age.

1:50:57 >> Yes.

1:50:57 >> What did you learn from him?

1:50:59 >> Everything.

1:51:00 >> Everything.

1:51:02 Percy Benis was man he was the best. He

1:51:06 was the best. He uh

1:51:10 he worked so hard. He made decisions him

1:51:13 and my mother that made me appreciate

1:51:16 them more than I I don't know if I ever

1:51:18 could appreciate anyone in my life. When

1:51:20 we were like

1:51:22 seven, eight years old at that time when

1:51:24 my dad got passed, they uh they decided

1:51:27 not to take government assistance

1:51:28 anymore. We want to make it on our own.

1:51:30 We were struggling, but they did. They

1:51:32 took no help. They just made it on their

1:51:34 own. Then they bought their first house

1:51:36 together. And then I watched that man

1:51:39 get up in the morning and he would go

1:51:42 and work for the city of Lafayette. It

1:51:44 was hot, man. It was 95, 100°, 100

1:51:47 degree humidity. You know what

1:51:48 Louisiana's like?

1:51:49 >> Mhm.

1:51:50 >> He would he would take the lime and make

1:51:52 the baseball fields and he would cut the

1:51:54 fields and the grass

1:51:55 >> and he would come home at 05:30, eat real

1:51:58 quick.

1:52:00 >> And he would get a a bath cuz we didn't

1:52:02 have a shower,

1:52:04 >> jump in his truck and go to a pizza

1:52:06 parlor and wash dishes to make an extra

1:52:09 60 bucks every time he did that. And he

1:52:12 did that constantly. And then when he

1:52:13 when I got old enough, I realized more

1:52:16 what he was doing. He when the days that

1:52:18 he wasn't going back to uh there, he was

1:52:21 going to the cemetery and he was cutting

1:52:23 it and he was weed eating next to the

1:52:25 grapes to make more money. So when I got

1:52:28 old enough, he started taking me with

1:52:29 him and he's like, "You get $35 a

1:52:32 month." So every time you do this, I

1:52:34 guess I made eight or $10, right?

1:52:36 Because it would take us a little bit of

1:52:37 time. I learned to work. He taught me to

1:52:40 work. And I think by him teaching me to

1:52:43 work, um it is

1:52:47 defined my life. It's defined my life. I

1:52:50 I don't

1:52:53 I was the captain of the Olympic

1:52:55 wrestling team

1:52:56 >> and it's because I worked hard. They saw

1:52:58 me. They saw me and said, "I want this

1:53:00 guy to lead our team."

1:53:01 >> Is that the type of father you are? You

1:53:03 try to be what Percy want to do to your

1:53:05 own kids.

1:53:06 >> That's what I try to be for my kids. I

1:53:08 try to be present and show them I'm

1:53:10 working, man. I'm making a life for you

1:53:12 guys that can be and I hope that you see

1:53:16 and appreciate what I'm doing,

1:53:18 >> right?

1:53:19 >> Because while

1:53:21 I don't see the struggle, they don't see

1:53:24 the struggle that I saw, they do see

1:53:27 that their dad is willing to just

1:53:29 >> I took my daughters to a photo shoot I

1:53:31 did for Monster Energy the other day

1:53:33 >> and they were like, "Dad, you work

1:53:34 hard." I was like, I wanted to give you

1:53:36 just kind of see what what dad does when

1:53:38 he gets up at 05:00 a.m. and he's back

1:53:40 home by 06:00 to make sure you guys have

1:53:42 dinner.

1:53:43 >> Right.

1:53:43 >> Right. It's like those types of things,

1:53:46 they they mean the world to me. My dad

1:53:48 was the best.

1:53:50 >> You lost your a daughter.

1:53:51 >> I did, man.

1:53:53 >> To 18 wheeler accident.

1:53:55 >> Yeah, that was that was the worst. That

1:53:58 was the worst. I've had a lot of things

1:54:00 happen in my life that that

1:54:03 um I try not to let define me. Like I

1:54:06 try like I try not to let like certain

1:54:08 things define me like the bad.

1:54:10 >> Mhm.

1:54:11 >> But yeah, that was the worst. I uh I was

1:54:16 23 years old. I had a daughter named

1:54:17 Kayan Emory.

1:54:18 >> Mhm.

1:54:19 >> And uh

1:54:23 we were in college or just finishing

1:54:25 college. So

1:54:27 her mom was from Colleen, Texas.

1:54:29 >> Okay.

1:54:30 >> And they were driving home to see her

1:54:32 parents and uh but her car didn't have

1:54:35 air conditioning.

1:54:36 >> Mhm.

1:54:37 >> And she was like, "I'm going to put my

1:54:39 kid in the car with my friend."

1:54:40 >> Mhm.

1:54:41 >> Because they have a newer car,

1:54:42 >> right?

1:54:43 >> Yeah. And it got rear ended by

1:54:45 18-wheeler. That was the worst, man.

1:54:47 >> If she was with her mom,

1:54:50 she would have been fine. But

1:54:53 we make these decisions at times that we

1:54:55 think are the right decision. And

1:54:59 >> it has killed her mom's life.

1:55:00 >> I was You know what, DC? I was about to

1:55:02 ask you. I bet she beat herself up.

1:55:05 >> She I should have I should have just

1:55:06 rolled the window down. She should have

1:55:08 been with me.

1:55:09 >> Yep. It her mom's life is

1:55:12 >> It hadn't been the same, has it?

1:55:13 >> No. That girl, that girl was on a track

1:55:16 team at Oklahoma State where I went to

1:55:17 school and she had such a big future and

1:55:20 now it's like she's at home taking care

1:55:22 of her mother. That that losing that

1:55:25 kid, losing our kid, like it killed her.

1:55:28 I was able to

1:55:30 I was able to spin it and say that every

1:55:34 time I wrestle, every time I fight, I

1:55:37 have an angel sitting on the cage to

1:55:39 watch over me.

1:55:40 >> Her mom was never able to do that. It's

1:55:42 sad, man. Yeah,

1:55:43 >> that was the worst thing that's ever

1:55:45 happened to my

1:55:45 >> Because as parents, we expect our kids

1:55:47 to bury us.

1:55:48 >> Yes.

1:55:48 >> We don't expect to bury a child.

1:55:50 >> Not that young.

1:55:51 >> Not that young, man. She's three and a

1:55:53 half months old.

1:55:54 >> So like to put her in a casket.

1:55:57 >> Yeah. That [ __ ] sucks. Yeah. I even

1:56:00 think just thinking about it like it

1:56:02 sucks. Has it changed the relationship

1:56:05 that you had with subsequent quid kids

1:56:07 that you hold them tighter that you like

1:56:10 you realize how just how fragile life is

1:56:13 that tomorrow is not promised even 3

1:56:16 hours from right now isn't promised?

1:56:19 >> No, I know. Yeah, it's it's uh it is

1:56:23 it's bad to the point that Shannon at

1:56:26 times you got to like you have to I have

1:56:29 to like

1:56:31 I have to like consciously try not to be

1:56:34 as much of a like a helicopter parent.

1:56:37 >> Mhm.

1:56:38 >> I'm trying to like because I know how

1:56:41 important it is for him to experience

1:56:43 things. But it is scary like my my son

1:56:48 is getting older now. Like

1:56:49 >> I just started I let him ride his bike

1:56:51 to the barber shop now to get a haircut.

1:56:52 That was something I could have never

1:56:54 done.

1:56:54 >> Like never.

1:56:56 >> You talking about a bicycle or motor

1:56:58 bike or motorcycle?

1:56:59 >> Like one of those electric

1:57:00 >> electric bike. Okay. Electric. Okay.

1:57:01 Okay.

1:57:01 >> So I let him but he but I always but I I

1:57:04 make him put his location on the moment

1:57:06 he leaves the house. Location on.

1:57:09 >> So I'm trying, dude. But yeah, it's

1:57:11 hard. It it really has uh it really has

1:57:15 changed me in terms of parenting.

1:57:17 >> You try. You try. It's important. Like

1:57:20 >> I did a lot growing up. I had a lot of

1:57:22 freedom

1:57:24 >> and it it it

1:57:25 >> it it gave me a little bit of like

1:57:27 street smarts and ability to adjust and

1:57:29 >> make my way around life.

1:57:31 >> You I mean pro people probably wouldn't

1:57:33 know this about you, but you've had a I

1:57:36 mean you've had a lot of death in your

1:57:38 family. Your grandmother, your cousin,

1:57:39 you lost a child at a very young age.

1:57:43 People

1:57:45 ask me because they know how close I am

1:57:47 with my grandmother. They will say,

1:57:48 "Shannon, how did you get over?"

1:57:50 >> Yeah.

1:57:50 >> I say, "You never get over it." No,

1:57:52 >> you just get better at dealing with it.

1:57:54 >> Yeah.

1:57:54 >> How have you been able to get better at

1:57:56 dealing with

1:57:57 >> loss? Uh well, at 20 when you lose a kid

1:58:01 at that age, right, like you feel like

1:58:04 nothing ever is going to feel worse.

1:58:08 But I've I've done I've managed to

1:58:12 I've managed to learn how to take those

1:58:17 things and try to make them push me

1:58:20 forward. Okay. So,

1:58:23 >> cuz my daughter like I had never made a

1:58:25 United States team

1:58:26 >> after my daughter passed I made six in a

1:58:28 row.

1:58:28 >> Wow.

1:58:29 >> Swear to God. The my daughter passed in

1:58:31 June or in May of uh

1:58:34 >> You had a bigger purpose.

1:58:34 >> May of 20. Yes.

1:58:36 >> That you didn't know.

1:58:37 >> Yes. And from I by by all this I

1:58:39 wrestled in the world championships for

1:58:41 the first time

1:58:42 >> then the Olympic Games and all the way

1:58:43 through.

1:58:45 >> My mom

1:58:47 when she passed uh a couple years ago

1:58:49 obviously I don't do anything

1:58:50 competitive anymore

1:58:52 >> but in terms of my media career has just

1:58:53 gotten bigger. Yeah. Because I work

1:58:55 harder now because I know that even

1:58:58 though I don't have to provide for her

1:58:59 in the way that I did before

1:59:01 >> I still need to work

1:59:03 >> because she was part of that work.

1:59:04 >> Yes. I want to do more TV because she

1:59:06 watched everything, right? So even

1:59:08 though she's not there watching now,

1:59:10 like I know she watched it all. So I try

1:59:12 to uh

1:59:13 >> I try to spin it. That's the only way

1:59:16 cuz otherwise it cripples you.

1:59:17 >> It does.

1:59:18 >> It really does [ __ ] you. Like you and

1:59:20 like I've heard stories about you and

1:59:21 your grandmother and it's like and how

1:59:23 special a lady she was to you.

1:59:24 >> Y

1:59:25 >> but yeah, you don't you don't ever get

1:59:26 over losing somebody you love that much.

1:59:29 >> You can't.

1:59:31 this cutting weight thing. You said that

1:59:33 in this Thanksgiving

1:59:36 you weighed 257.

1:59:38 >> Yeah.

1:59:38 >> And basically 4550 days you were down to

1:59:41 204.

1:59:42 >> Yep.

1:59:43 >> Obviously that's very taxing on the

1:59:45 body.

1:59:45 >> Yes, it is.

1:59:46 >> Very taxing to cut that kind of water

1:59:48 weight cuz that's not a that's not all

1:59:50 just you know good weight.

1:59:52 >> Yeah.

1:59:53 >> And you went to renal failure at one

1:59:55 time, right?

1:59:56 >> I did at the Olympic Games. Yeah. But I

1:59:58 wasn't that big at the time. I was just

2:00:00 in wrestling. I didn't have the access

2:00:02 to the I didn't have the access or the

2:00:04 resources.

2:00:04 >> Mhm.

2:00:05 >> I couldn't have done that without my

2:00:08 chef,

2:00:08 >> right?

2:00:09 >> I had like Tyler Minton

2:00:10 >> Mhm.

2:00:11 >> uh was working for me at the time.

2:00:13 >> He uh

2:00:15 every meal, every meal, every drink, he

2:00:20 would feed me, then he would write it

2:00:22 down.

2:00:23 >> He would feed me, then he would write it

2:00:25 down. I got to drink a kombucha every

2:00:27 day. That was it. outside of water,

2:00:29 that's all I had,

2:00:30 >> right?

2:00:30 >> And some sort of uh like electrolytes

2:00:33 >> stuff to make sure I wasn't cramping

2:00:35 >> when I went to the uh the cage to train.

2:00:38 >> But outside of like that, I had water

2:00:41 and eat every meal.

2:00:42 >> Mhm.

2:00:42 >> Here you go. And at the right times when

2:00:45 I was wrestling,

2:00:47 I would I would eat until Wednesday and

2:00:50 then I just would not eat until I

2:00:52 weighed in on Friday or Saturday. I

2:00:54 would go three days without anything.

2:00:56 Rob DeWalis really still does that. the

2:00:58 champ at 135.

2:01:00 >> He just will not eat.

2:01:02 >> I don't I don't You don't have to do it

2:01:04 that way anymore.

2:01:05 >> You don't. He's got money. But yeah, I

2:01:07 would uh

2:01:09 >> my my kidneys quit on me at the Olympic

2:01:12 Games.

2:01:12 >> Mhm.

2:01:13 >> End up in the hospital. I wasn't a

2:01:15 diamond

2:01:16 >> because they don't let you take

2:01:16 diuretics, does it?

2:01:18 >> Can't take diuretics. Can't take IVs.

2:01:20 Can't do nothing. If I could have took

2:01:21 an IV after weigh-ins, I'd have been

2:01:23 fine. Right.

2:01:24 >> Right. It was right before the Olympic

2:01:25 Games that they did away with IVs. I

2:01:28 didn't want to cheat.

2:01:30 >> I didn't want to cheat my body. Dude,

2:01:31 there it was. That was a

2:01:32 >> What's What's the most weight you've had

2:01:34 to cut?

2:01:38 >> So,

2:01:39 by by design,

2:01:42 if I was fighting on

2:01:44 if I was fighting on Saturday

2:01:46 >> Mhm.

2:01:47 >> when I showed up to Vegas on Tuesday, I

2:01:50 probably was like 220. if it was good.

2:01:55 But I remember one time I

2:01:58 in New York against Rumble in Buffalo, I

2:02:00 was like 231 on Sunday

2:02:03 before the fight on Saturday the next

2:02:05 >> what?

2:02:06 >> 231. Yeah.

2:02:06 >> And you got to get down to 2 205.

2:02:08 >> Yeah. But I was like I was heavy. So I'd

2:02:12 go run, lose like 5 lbs. You lose a lot

2:02:15 of weight, Shannon.

2:02:16 >> Yeah.

2:02:16 >> And you drink a lot of water,

2:02:17 >> right?

2:02:18 >> Those these nutritionists are so good at

2:02:20 manipulating weight now.

2:02:21 >> Yes. You have no idea. So like

2:02:24 >> if I'm like 217, 218, 220, like 220.

2:02:27 >> Oh, you're a sweet spot. You in your

2:02:28 wheelhouse

2:02:29 >> because because now I've got that with

2:02:30 two gallons of water in a day.

2:02:32 >> Right.

2:02:33 >> Right. That's 16 lbs at minimum. So by

2:02:35 the time I get in that sauna, I'm like

2:02:38 it all comes off.

2:02:39 >> But it's only for a short period of

2:02:41 time.

2:02:41 >> Right.

2:02:42 >> Like I'm at 204 and a half or maybe an

2:02:45 hour.

2:02:46 >> When you re when you re

2:02:48 >> hydrate. Yeah. What are you What are you

2:02:50 going back up to? You going to rebound

2:02:52 to what? 220 225.

2:02:54 >> When Jon Jones for when I fought Jon

2:02:55 Jones and I was in peak physical

2:02:57 condition.

2:02:57 >> Yeah.

2:02:58 >> There was nothing I could do to get over

2:02:59 222.

2:03:01 >> Like I mean literally trained there at

2:03:02 for the last four weeks of camp cuz I

2:03:04 was so locked in.

2:03:05 >> Right.

2:03:06 >> When I fought Rumble Johnson, I weighed

2:03:07 231 on Saturday night when I fought him

2:03:10 the next day.

2:03:11 >> Wow.

2:03:11 >> I weighed 205.

2:03:12 >> Yeah. 20 I gained 26 pounds overnight.

2:03:16 >> That's too much. I felt so sluggish and

2:03:17 horrible.

2:03:18 >> Right.

2:03:18 >> But yeah, I've cut a lot of weight. I

2:03:20 use you lose like 10 pounds an hour

2:03:22 though when you do those weight cuts.

2:03:24 >> Wow.

2:03:26 >> Do you feel that your your height I mean

2:03:28 because like you little but probably a

2:03:32 tick under six foot tall.

2:03:34 >> I'm five I've gotten shorter. I'm like

2:03:36 510 on a good day. 510 and a half. I've

2:03:39 I've shrunk. Shannon, have you shrunk at

2:03:41 all? Have you gotten shorter at all?

2:03:42 >> Yeah, I think so too. I think as we get

2:03:43 older we we we shrink it. I I believe I

2:03:46 have. But but when you when you you you

2:03:49 like for

2:03:50 >> I would think somebody your size your

2:03:52 height would be ideal is ideal for

2:03:55 wrestling.

2:03:56 >> Oh wrestling

2:03:56 >> because you you because you got a short

2:03:58 torso but you got long legs

2:03:59 >> compact. Yeah.

2:04:01 >> And I'm good at getting close. Once I

2:04:03 get once I get if I get they say I'm

2:04:05 sticky,

2:04:06 >> right?

2:04:06 >> If I get close to you, I'm sticking to

2:04:08 you like you stuck in a fly trap. Like

2:04:10 seriously, it's like

2:04:11 >> So you're trying to close the distance.

2:04:12 >> Oh, if I got close, you're in trouble.

2:04:14 If I can grab you by the head, I'm

2:04:15 punching you uppercuts. If I can grab

2:04:17 your leg, then you're really in trouble

2:04:19 because I had a thousand ways to finish

2:04:20 a takedown.

2:04:22 >> The moment I got your leg,

2:04:23 >> Yeah.

2:04:24 >> you're in a lot of trouble.

2:04:24 >> Yeah.

2:04:25 >> Because I'm either gonna move you here,

2:04:26 left, right, up, down.

2:04:28 >> Mhm.

2:04:28 >> It's all subtleties. It's the same thing

2:04:30 like how So like

2:04:32 >> Shannon, I could I could actually try to

2:04:35 guard you right now and I could not.

2:04:38 >> Cuz even if you might not be able to run

2:04:39 as fast as you did, right, you going to

2:04:41 give me something in the shoulders or

2:04:42 something in the eyes. You going to get

2:04:44 some separation.

2:04:45 >> Correct. That's me and wrestling. I'm

2:04:46 just like here, here, here, here,

2:04:49 >> and they get lost.

2:04:50 >> Do you like It's It's funny like when

2:04:54 you grab somebody here cuz I'm watching

2:04:56 these boxes and you watch him close up,

2:04:58 he'll throw a punch and he put his hand

2:04:59 up because he know what's coming and

2:05:01 he'll do this and he'll throw that. Oh,

2:05:02 he'll do this and he'll do that. So, you

2:05:04 know, like if I got this, I know what

2:05:07 he's going to do.

2:05:09 >> Absolutely. I'll I'll manipulate you to

2:05:11 do what I want you to do.

2:05:12 >> Wow.

2:05:13 >> Yeah. I'll manipulate you. That's why

2:05:15 like my takedown offense, I think I

2:05:17 might have landed 50% of my takedowns.

2:05:19 40.

2:05:20 >> Wow.

2:05:20 >> They're like, "Dude, you only landed

2:05:22 40." Like, "Yeah, but the first few

2:05:24 aren't designed to take you down,

2:05:26 >> right?

2:05:26 >> They're to set you up for number four,

2:05:28 five, and six.

2:05:29 >> When I really want to get you down,

2:05:30 >> when I really want to get you down, then

2:05:31 you get up in the air, I flip you or I

2:05:33 trip you or it's like, yeah, it's like

2:05:35 it's all setups."

2:05:37 >> You mentioned boxing was your first

2:05:38 love, though.

2:05:39 >> Yep, I did. Cuz it's all I knew. It's

2:05:43 what we knew. Like they would watch my

2:05:45 uncles all watch the wild war the sports

2:05:47 every weekend and we'd watch like George

2:05:49 Foreman clips and Muhammad Ali clips and

2:05:52 Mike Tyson.

2:05:53 >> So it's like we're watching this

2:05:55 greatness and it looks like us,

2:05:58 >> right?

2:05:58 >> That is where the difference was.

2:06:00 >> You watch that greatness and it's like

2:06:02 wow this dude looks like he could be

2:06:03 where I'm from

2:06:04 >> and he's making he's the man,

2:06:06 >> right?

2:06:06 >> He's a superstar. That's what drew me

2:06:09 into boxing

2:06:10 >> because every story was about a kid from

2:06:12 a tough neighborhood.

2:06:13 >> Yes.

2:06:13 >> He was from Michigan. He was from

2:06:15 Louisville, Kentucky. He was from like

2:06:17 just all these places. Yeah.

2:06:19 >> The main streets like wait a minute,

2:06:21 this looks very familiar.

2:06:22 >> And look at him today, right?

2:06:24 >> So yeah, it it just drew me in like

2:06:27 >> Bud and Canelo.

2:06:30 >> That's a tough fight. I saw Bud

2:06:31 recently. He's big.

2:06:32 >> Bud bigger than you think. He's stronger

2:06:34 than you think.

2:06:35 >> Strong, too. Your bud son is ridiculous.

2:06:38 We had Wrestlemania right up the street.

2:06:41 He got a belt. He walked past me and he

2:06:44 was looking at me the whole time. He

2:06:46 looked at me said, "You the wrestler. I

2:06:49 knocked you out on UFC." I was like,

2:06:51 "Bo, you crazy." When he crazy, Bud told

2:06:53 me he had to whip him. Bud said he went

2:06:55 to Sean uh what's his name? Sean

2:06:58 Crawford. Sean Taylor. Sean uh Sean

2:07:00 >> Sean Porter.

2:07:01 >> Sean Porter. Bud say Sean Bud say that's

2:07:04 him. went to Sean Porter said, "My dad

2:07:06 knocked you out." Sean Porter had to

2:07:08 call him and be like, "Man, your son's

2:07:10 crazy." Buzz, I had to spank him.

2:07:14 He crazy. But yes, he's bigger. It's a

2:07:17 big time fight. Canelo better have his

2:07:19 game ready. Yeah, because if not, he

2:07:20 going to get beat by Bud.

2:07:21 >> Yeah, Bud. I mean, like I said, Bud B I

2:07:24 mean, Bud walks Bud fought at, you know,

2:07:26 last fought at, you know, Junior

2:07:27 Middleweight at 154, but Bud walks

2:07:29 around at like 180.

2:07:31 >> He's big, man. And he's tall, too.

2:07:32 >> Yeah,

2:07:33 >> he's very tall. He looked big. I saw him

2:07:34 inside the uh the Apex training. Yep. He

2:07:38 looked big. You went watch him train,

2:07:39 too?

2:07:40 >> I uh No, we did a we did a interview

2:07:42 with him and but he I say he's he's

2:07:44 stronger than you think.

2:07:45 >> He's stronger than you could tell.

2:07:46 >> Yeah, he's stronger than you think.

2:07:47 >> Got his hands full.

2:07:48 >> He does.

2:07:49 >> You were bullied as a kid. Is that why

2:07:50 you got into wrestling and and fighting

2:07:53 because you were bullied? You're like, I

2:07:54 ain't taking this issue no more.

2:07:55 >> So, I was bullied bad, Shannon.

2:07:57 >> Okay.

2:07:57 >> Like this guy used to beat me up all the

2:07:59 time. He would beat me up for no reason.

2:08:01 It was like no reason to fight me. He

2:08:03 would just pick on me. If they they

2:08:05 could have three other kids fight, he

2:08:07 would show up to watch the fight. Then

2:08:08 once that fight was over, he's like,

2:08:09 "Should I might as well give me one

2:08:11 until they get a dog."

2:08:12 >> I was scared, too. I was so scared of

2:08:15 him. And then I I learned to wrestle.

2:08:17 Once I got him, it was over, man. Right.

2:08:19 >> Once I got him once, it was over. But

2:08:21 yeah. Yeah. It gave me self-defense. I

2:08:23 think wrestling is so important for kids

2:08:26 because then you learn to defend

2:08:27 yourself and also it gives you a

2:08:29 confidence. I got this academy in my my

2:08:31 in Gilroy, the Daniel Cory Wrestling

2:08:33 Academy. Kids walk in and they're

2:08:35 hunched over looking like scared, right?

2:08:39 Cuz the ones that have been doing it for

2:08:40 a while have this intensity about them.

2:08:42 They're strong. They're confident,

2:08:43 >> right?

2:08:44 >> 6 months later, they're like

2:08:46 >> walking in with some I'm like, "Okay,

2:08:48 >> this what I need." That's what wrestling

2:08:50 gives you. I I think it's the best.

2:08:52 >> Right. Have you ever been arrested for

2:08:54 street fighting?

2:08:54 >> One time I got arrested in college when

2:08:57 I was a freshman. I punched a guy, man.

2:09:00 >> What do you do?

2:09:01 >> So, I went to a junior college in

2:09:03 Kansas,

2:09:05 >> and uh

2:09:07 one of the biggest mistakes that young

2:09:09 black men make when they go to different

2:09:11 places is they almost try to recreate

2:09:13 themselves.

2:09:14 >> You can be a great kid, but you will

2:09:15 portray yourself as a gangster or a bad

2:09:18 guy, right?

2:09:18 >> Because you want people to not only

2:09:20 respect you, you want to make sure you

2:09:22 fit in and they kind of fear you a

2:09:23 little bit. Yep.

2:09:24 >> It's like very important. So I did that

2:09:26 and I'm at this party and we go to this

2:09:28 party and the guy comes out. It's his

2:09:29 house and he starts talking and he said

2:09:32 something that I viewed as disrespectful

2:09:34 when he came charging towards me. So I

2:09:36 punched him, bro. He he I don't know if

2:09:39 his jaw was like super like loose

2:09:42 >> cuz he he went he went to

2:09:43 >> he went down and his jaw broke really

2:09:45 bad.

2:09:46 >> So blood's like everywhere. We run off

2:09:49 me and all my wrestler friends. The cops

2:09:51 come to get us. I we're in Kansas. I was

2:09:54 like, "Oh man, we saw I saw this Mexican

2:09:56 dude do it and run away." They said,

2:09:57 "Nah, man. It was you.

2:10:00 >> It was you, Eric.

2:10:02 Try to put it off."

2:10:03 >> I tried to put on a Mexican dude, man. I

2:10:05 was like, "Oh, they ain't got many brown

2:10:07 people out here. They ain't got many

2:10:08 brown people out here." They said, "No,

2:10:10 it was you." They put me in jail. I was

2:10:13 crying, dude. Then they put they put me

2:10:14 in jail on a Friday night, Shannon. And

2:10:16 in those little towns

2:10:17 >> Oh, you don't get till Monday.

2:10:19 >> And then once Monday come, they got 72

2:10:22 hours to see you. Yeah, man.

2:10:23 >> They kept me in jail till Wednesday.

2:10:25 >> Damn.

2:10:25 >> I was crying. My mom actually to pay to

2:10:28 pay to get me out, she had to take like

2:10:30 put it up against her house.

2:10:32 >> Wow.

2:10:32 >> To get me out of jail, she put her house

2:10:35 on the line as a as counter for the uh

2:10:38 >> for the bail.

2:10:39 >> For the bail.

2:10:40 >> Yep. And then I was like, "This woman

2:10:43 won't do anything for me. I'm the one

2:10:44 that messed up."

2:10:45 >> Right.

2:10:46 >> I ran her phone bill up, calling her

2:10:48 every day. Thousands of thousands of

2:10:50 dollars. They ain't had nothing to pay

2:10:52 that. But she answered it every time.

2:10:55 That's why she was the best to me.

2:10:56 Everybody like, "Oh, you love your mama

2:10:59 more than you'll love anybody in the

2:11:00 world." I was like, "You saw what she

2:11:01 did for me."

2:11:03 >> She She said she was the best.

2:11:04 >> You tried some everything. You sold

2:11:06 drugs as a kid.

2:11:07 >> I You tried to

2:11:08 >> Shannon, I was a bad drug dealer.

2:11:10 >> What? So what? So

2:11:11 >> Shannon, you don't want to hear this

2:11:12 story.

2:11:14 Shannon,

2:11:14 >> we made hor we made fake drugs one time.

2:11:16 >> Oh, look. share a weed with.

2:11:19 >> So when you cut grass and just put

2:11:21 >> This was when I was a kid. No, no, no,

2:11:23 no. Back when I was growing up, it

2:11:25 wasn't weed. It was crack.

2:11:27 >> Oh,

2:11:27 >> I tried to sell crack. Shannon, I was

2:11:29 broke. I needed $20.

2:11:32 >> Bro, you don't know how to cook?

2:11:33 >> I don't know how to cook. I don't know.

2:11:35 I don't know nothing about it. But

2:11:36 listen what we did, though. We took some

2:11:38 uh wax.

2:11:39 >> Yeah.

2:11:40 >> And put or gel on it cuz I guess that it

2:11:43 must numb the face or something. One of

2:11:44 my friends told me that one. He was

2:11:46 Yeah. So I gave it to the drug. I gave

2:11:47 it to the dude who gave me the money.

2:11:50 >> He

2:11:51 He start

2:11:53 >> He look up. I took off running.

2:11:56 >> I took off,

2:12:01 >> man. He called me, man. I running back.

2:12:03 I gave out. There you go, man. You got

2:12:05 me.

2:12:05 >> Bad down. You You done ate the crack

2:12:07 now. You You out of this.

2:12:08 >> That was the last time. That was the

2:12:10 last time I ever tried some stupid [ __ ]

2:12:11 like that. I was like, man, this is

2:12:13 sports for me. It was bad. Could

2:12:17 a boxer ever be the MMA fighter in a

2:12:20 street fight?

2:12:20 >> No. No. They would get taken down. It It

2:12:24 would happen too fast. I saw James Tony

2:12:27 fight Randy Couture.

2:12:29 James Tony was one of the slickest, best

2:12:31 boxers of all time.

2:12:32 >> He tapped without actually tapping

2:12:34 Randy. He just waved at the ref like,

2:12:37 "Save me."

2:12:37 >> Right.

2:12:38 >> That's what happens when boxers fight.

2:12:40 >> The baddest man on the planet The

2:12:41 baddest man on the planet is a mixed

2:12:42 martial arts fighter.

2:12:44 >> Mhm.

2:12:44 >> Nothing else. in terms of hand-to-hand

2:12:46 combat,

2:12:47 >> right?

2:12:48 >> Yeah. The baddest man in on the planet

2:12:50 is the UFC heavyweight champion every

2:12:53 time. Unless Francis Andu is out there

2:12:56 fighting for someone else,

2:12:57 >> right?

2:12:58 >> Then there's a chance that he's the

2:12:59 baddest man on the planet.

2:13:00 >> There's a chance it might be somebody

2:13:01 else.

2:13:02 >> He might beat whoever we have because

2:13:04 he's that good. But

2:13:06 >> if not, it's either Tom Aspenol,

2:13:09 Francis, Ganu, or Jon Jones right now.

2:13:11 Those are the baddest men on the planet.

2:13:12 Nobody else. we come back and have a

2:13:15 conversation five years, 10 years from

2:13:17 now.

2:13:17 >> Yep.

2:13:19 >> What's DC doing?

2:13:22 >> Uh, probably the same thing. Probably

2:13:24 doing the same thing. Working UFC

2:13:26 fights. I love my job.

2:13:28 >> I love calling fights. I think I have

2:13:29 the best job in the world.

2:13:30 >> Yep.

2:13:31 >> Uh, podcasting, doing television. Same.

2:13:34 Cuz I don't think that right now uh

2:13:37 >> I don't think that right now I'm willing

2:13:40 to stop you. Like we said earlier,

2:13:41 you're a worker. I'm a worker.

2:13:43 >> I just might be living in the town

2:13:45 wherever my son or my daughter goes to

2:13:47 college. I just can't let it go. I told

2:13:49 my daughter the other day, if you I

2:13:51 said, "Pick a school close and I'll pay

2:13:52 everything."

2:13:54 >> She wants to get far away. She want

2:13:58 you thinking of colleges yet? She goes,

2:14:00 "What? No." She goes, "Dad, I'm 13." I

2:14:02 go, "Could you go to Cal?" I like, "Stay

2:14:05 close." I go, "I'll pay you rent. I'll

2:14:07 give you a stipen. I'll do everything."

2:14:08 She was like, "No, you don't have to.

2:14:10 You're you're good."

2:14:12 You want to get away from my ass.

2:14:14 >> My man.

2:14:14 >> Daniel Cormier.

2:14:15 >> Yes. You're the man.

2:14:16 >> Is it Cormier or Cormier?

2:14:17 >> Cormier.

2:14:18 >> Cormier.

2:14:19 >> Cormier.

2:14:20 >> Yeah.

2:14:20 >> DC.

2:14:21 >> That was good. All my life. Been

2:14:23 grinding all my life. Sacrifice. Hustle.

2:14:26 Paid the price. Want a slice. Got to

2:14:29 roll the dice. That's why. All my life

2:14:31 I've been grinding all my life. All my

2:14:33 life. Been grinding all my life.

2:14:36 Sacrifice. Hustle. Paid the price. Want

2:14:39 a slice. Got to roll a dice. That's why

2:14:41 all my life I've been grinding all my

2:14:43 life.
